Birding Around Madison Wisconsin, May 2024 (A few warblers, Sandhill Cranes, Barred Owls)

This is a few miscellaneous birds from May 2024. It seemed to be a slow spring for warbler migration in Madison, WI. I was so excited to capture a Magnolia Warbler singing (at about 4:20), but when I ended my walk I noticed my microphone was not plugged in the cord just dangling. So it was just the camera microphone.

I love to watch bathing birds, I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because they seem so vulnerable while bathing. Usually when I sit in a good bathing spot, numerous species come in to bathe. This particular spring is very inviting to the birds on a hot day. HoNeeUm Pond which is part of the UW Arboretum. Madison, WI.
Birding at Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge

We spent several hours at Horicon on June 2, 2024. It started out quite foggy which made for some interesting views. Ultimately we had great weather. My favorites were the Yellow-headed Blackbirds who I've never really seen well before. They were everywhere along Marsh road and quite gregarious. Wisconsin, June 2, 2024

I camped for 2 nights at this state park situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. It is a beautiful place. The main campground is high on a bluff overlooking both magnificent rivers. It is a nesting sit for the rare Cerulean Warbler. Unfortunately, I did not get any video of them. Sandhill Cranes and New Colts

This crane family was feeding right along a road. They didn't seem to be bothered by the cars or the bulldozer. Luckily, it's a 25mph zone. Hopefully they do okay.

Sandhill Cranes Raising a Canada Goose Baby!!!

This pair of Sandhill Cranes was found to be raising a Canada Goose baby at a local park. This video is a bit long, but I couldn't cut any of the cuteness! This is such interesting behavior. Doing a brief google search shows this was documented another time in Michigan in 2019. I hope there will be future episodes documenting this interesting saga.

They don't actually raise the duckling. The little one is quite able to instinctively feed itself without any parental intervention. They provide protection though.

Unfortunately, the gosling was found injured. A wildlife rescue was called and they found canine puncture wounds and a broken wing. The gosling had to be euthanized. It would have been so interesting to watch the relationship develop. It was so sad.
