I remember when I first heard this tune. It starts with a fanfare and then it leads into this unbelievably funky groove. My reaction to this was summed up nicely by one of the CZcams comments on the video I was watching where they described the groove as a "fall off your chair groove". When it comes in it it blows your mind. This tune is one of the funkiest things I have ever heard/played.
My approach to this is moving between playing behind the beat and absolutely in time. The great thing about funk in jazz is that when the band is absolutely laying down the groove, you have a great support from which to improvise.
