Repairing Damage From The "FINGER TIGHT" Years At Gibson: Step 4, Output Jackery!

The consequence for this guitar being from the finger tight years at Gibson, is that the Output Jack fell apart and caused the owner to poke her lead all around the wood near the hole. Today I fix that.

Giving this Les Paul A LIVING WAGE Finish: Cosmetic perfection is very expensive.
zhlédnutí 2,9KPřed rokem
It's often occurred to me that Gibson are able to offer far less expensive versions of their popular Les Paul Standard. The reason is mostly labour at a living wage. Actual materials costs I would imagine are marginal compared to paying a guy $30 an hour to sand away orange peel. That's just my theory. So I'm adding some of the labour back to this Les Paul to elevate its status among Les Paul's...

Does every other word have to be the “f” bomb?
I have a 2007 Les Paul Studio which I bought new. I love it, it is the best guitar I have ever owned (played really). And it gets better with age. It's chambered. I have never abused it. I don't throw it around, bang it around. The gold is wearing off the hardware in places, the finish has weird inconsistencies, but ome of the coolest things I'm noticing is that checking is happening. I think it started a long time ago, but it's noticable now. I used to think they were scratches, but it's checking and spreading further with every season up here in Canada. Cold winter, hot humid summer. And over all, the guitar has yellowed and darkened. I can even see the yellowing on black on the back an especially the neck. Looking at my guitar.... My brother picked up a Gibson SG Jr a few years back, probably partly due to how awesome my guitar is. He's a Fender man. Actually he's a guy who prefers to look at his guitars more than anything (which bothers me because with my guitar, I am amazed at the tone and playability of it. I WANT to play it and I want it set up well). When he bought this SG, the first thing he wanted to do was buy a spare pick guard?!? I remember telling him, why? Why would you do that? A brand new spare pick guard? Just play it. You should not care about normal wear and tear you Gibson because of your doing it properly, it WILL happen. That includes sweating on it, or accidentally dinging it on the case latches, or the gold wearing off the hardware, or the checking. In fact when it was new, it was too new looking IMO. I don't abuse it, or intentionally mess it up, but whatever happens, happens. Looks are part of the guitar but it irritates me when people either intentionally weather a guitar, or they own the guitar to look at it and not even play it. It's looks will not affect the awesome of your guitar which you should be playing.. It cleans up well when it does get cleaned, but I bought it to play it. PS I know this is satire and I absolutely agree with you.
I was looking for locking tuners for my 2011 J-45 with Grover tuners. I did found Grover locking tuners, but when I search on CZcams I can only find videos of people showing how to put them on electric guitars. Well…, I think I know how to replace Grover tuners with Grover locking tuners, so that’s not what I was interested in. What I wanted to know was can you use them on acoustic guitars? It seems obvious, but if you can’t find anything about THAT you start to wonder. So I was more than happy to see you using locking tuners. I do have one simple question and I really hope you are willing to answer me: what tuners did you use and was there anything you needed to do besides unscrewing the old tuners and replacing them with the new ones? Did you use Grover Rotogrip 502C Chrome tuners? If so, that would make my life so much easier! I absolutely HATE restringing guitars and especially acoustics. I know how to do it, but I just can’t stand it and for some reason it always takes way longer than is necessary. In the last 12 months I replaced the original tuners on two of my electric guitars with locking tuners and in my opinion it’s the best invention since sliced bread. 😊
Wish you lived near me - I have an Épi just the same - for me would stand up against any Gibson I have played ( that is a lot ) . This was a great vid - thanks .
I think I damaged my brent hinds terror by turning it on without a load 😢. Hopefully just a fuse and maybe new tubes

Thats one of those really thin les Paul's
Shine but no spline
Got the same guitar and want to do the same change you did. First I bought gotoh locking tuners but they did not fit, they where to loose, the peghole is just to big. But I will try with this groover instead. Can you please give me the name and modelnumber on this groover so i don´t do the same mistake again.
Good job! 👏👏👏
What grit sand was used in between the layers of lacquer?
sounds cheap or cheap pedal or amp

Hey mate, i hope you're well. I tried looking up the same Minwax stain you were using but i don't think its being made anymore. Do you know what i could use to achieve this same yellow? it looks fantastic!
What about the nut??
I'm absolutely put off Gibson by this guitar. Not by the issues with this guitar but by the fit and finish. The inlays and the binding are a mess. This guitar looks like a cheap piece of junk. Gibson went to the dogs many moons ago. All this oh its great it's amerucwn made is a load of bs. In second of seeing this guitar I thought it was a Chinese copy.
Great video. Short and sweet. If I might add ... some folks test either north or south coils (or the entire pickup) for CONTINUITY. And think that just cos it doesnt beep the coil or the whole pickup is bad. ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BEEP. What you do is test the resistance between the start and end of each coil. If you get the letters OL or a very low reading less than 1 that's when you know the coil is bad (broken coil wire). Dont go back to the store and give em hell always check resistance first.
I don't think they deepened the nut slot. Gibson lacquers over the bottom of the nut. You just don't see the bottom of a nut on a Gibson, until the nut is changed. When changing the nut the lacquer needs to be scored around it.
This guy calling other people idiots is hilarious.
Knock Knock~ Who's there? I don't understand why a certain specific reliefe is desireable. I just set as close to 0 as the neck will tolerate with correct action and neck angle. With a straight neck, I'll set my own guitars to 0 and add reliefe if needed. Is there something I'm missing? At least you got a good setup on that gem!. Be sure your friend is sitting down when you tell him.
only just seen this. absolute idiot. why does he not know to lift the bridge. now he is looking at the other end of his guitar and #'[p;lkp[--- ing it up. probably be alright with bridge lifted and he wouldnt have to look at the rest of his guitar thinking something is wrong. wouldn't let him near a guitar and thats that.
This guy is the saddest sack. I would never let a man with this attitude touch any of my instruments.
So did you change pickups, or are those the stock Squier wide range pickups? Also, wouldn't 500K pots be more appropriate for humbuckers vs 250K pots?
The neck would have been the first thing I would have looked at.That one looks obvious that it has been broken.
Is this a Chibson??
I don't mind a public meet up. I have a pignose amp. It's rechargeable.
I thought my case was closed was headed to a gig grab my guitar Case by the handle pulled it off the bed the guitar fell out flat on the floor and broke the neck on my 92 Gibson Studio I'm sick sick sick so I'm trying to find out how to fix it myself totally my fault tragedy tragedy
Shit guitars I swear my Gibson has dings on it from bumping it into stuff and the hardware has changed colors after 15 years of play. Even needed a fret level like wth
Why am I having such a hard time finding an output jack plate to replace a broken one?
Lube your nuts
Thats one nice guuitar i have the 57 mij just finesed insalling plate so far watched 2 grest vedios yours for a 62 abd onther 57ri...i guess that sheilding from the factory dud not cut it.RocknRollflat5
Great glueing job, you must have managed to get every strand of the timber fibres to go back into exactly where they were ripped apart from and bonded them so tight it will be a much stronger neck. BTW thats a really cool and beautiful guitar.... a real keeper.
Looks good to me.
Your husband at the beginning, plays very well
thats why i love the gibson custom shop monkey SG it has a laquered rosewood board looks beautiful and adds such a unique look and feel to it
Why additional stress on the headstock by unwinding the strings?? Just cut them, you're not going to reuse the old strings are you?
brilliant job well done
I installed locking tuners on my Mexican 2023 Stratocaster, set it up with 8 gauge, decked the bridge, and replaced the bridge pickup with a Seymore Duncan Hot Rails. Now my neck and mid pickup needs to be replaced too because they sound cheap and the SD doesn't hum at all so it made the original pickups sound like they right out of a cheap Chinese factory. lol
Absolutely beautiful work. 👍
The pink card …. Awesome freakin idea!!!
What was Gibson thinking with that garbage???? A real upgrade like good tuners doesn't devalue a guitar, especially one 2000s+ vintage. Grovers or Schallers even improve 50s and 60s Juniors, Melody Makers, and other LPs, but "original" status becomes a sticky issue with those. Not with a 2015 anything. Just make it work better. Thanks for the vid.
....In my opinion, A 2015 Epiphone Junior is a better instrument than a "real" Gibson, especially when fitted with a P90. I'm old, and have or had Gibsons from the 50s and 60s, 70s, and 90s. Other makers as well. I have a little experience with them. I still love my '54 ES125 with the sweet P90. I love my '59 Melody Maker with the wider 50s neck profile (my '66 is the narrow neck). I like my 2014 Epi Junior with a P90 WAY better than the '73 Gibson LP Custom I had. It's better at everything if I don't need neck pickup tones for a situation. I have other guitars for that. Gibson's QC and ideas have been hit or miss for years.
