Filming wild elephants with Tigere and Ranger Ruan
Part of what I tried to capture is herd-structure of elephants - how the calves need the adults and the leaders and the protectors and the playmates. So we know why - but seeing it is always better. Tigere the elephant manager and Ranger Ruan helped me to get the shots I needed. (In the end it didn't make it into the film... but that is the nature of documentary making.) At least we can look at it now :) Enjoy the "working game drive". :)

Not all nice scenes could make it into the film (for various reasons). I edited this to give you a sense of the time it took to sometimes get Khanyisa to finish her bottle (I did cut out the nothing-happening-sections to spare us all...). Welcome to Khanyisa-time :)

This was shot while I was filming Khanyisa's story. My one friend told me I should do an interview with myself and take this CZcams Channel thing seriously... that was 3 years ago. But here it is now - life happened and we were in edit with the film for a looooooong time. Like always - music by Ben Willem from Patchley Road studios

A piece of the opening music of the documentary. You can hear some of the elephant carer's voices in this small section as well as some elephant voices. Ben Willem the composer really did an absolutely great job on the brief! What a blessing to have worked with him.

The HERD team is really amazing in what they do. That’s why I persevered in making the film, through all the difficult moments. The story had to be shown right?! 🫶🌸
Khanyisa truly is special in ever so many ways; her recovery is rare. May her story show the entire world how vulnerable we humans have made these glorious creatures, and how enriching to our own species is their survival. TY for making it so compelling. 🙌🫶

Thank you so very much for this film. I am a subscriber to Herd Elephant Orphanage and watched Khanyisa since she was a baby and brought to Adine and the carers at HERD. I have cried tears of sadness for this little baby when it seemed she might not survive and I have cried tears of joy at her every step to healing. Her acceptance into the Jabulani herd was the culmination of their extremely hard work to save her and her second chance to grow up, be loved and have her own ellie herd again. We love Khanyisa and all the Jabulani herd and the team at HERD for never giving up. Thank you for sharing their amazing story.

@@diaryofanelephantorphan an update, in case you were not aware. HERD just lost their little baby bull Phabeni at 11 months due to acute enteritus. A loss that has half a million of us in devastating grief.
