English Football Legends Johnny Haynes, Sir Bobby Charlton, Nat Lofthouse & More on Duncan Edwards
English Football Legends Johnny Haynes, Sir Bobby Charlton, Nat Lofthouse, Sir Matt Busby, Jimmy Murphy, Alan Mullery, Alan Ball, Wilf McGuinness & Jimmy Murphy on the ability of Duncan Edwards, plus articles from Jimmy Murphy & Don Revie
“He was the best player I ever saw, or am likely to see in my life. If I was asked to name a team of the players I played with, his name would be the first one I would put in, no question about it.” - Sir Bobby Charlton
“I never thought I could be as good as him. Never. He had every talent, he was the best short passer, he was the best long passer. He had terrific vision. His 60-70 yard passes with a heavy ball were pinpoint accurate.
He had an enthusiasm for the game, he never stopped talking about it. He’d pick you up if you were losing. He was absolutely sensational, fantastic. He was a great loss to England, and he would probably have played in the 1966 World Cup final because he was young enough. Probably also the United team that won the European Cup in 1968.” - Sir Bobby Charlton
“He was Roy Keane and Bryan Robson combined, but in a bigger body. He could play as an attacker, creator or defender and be the best player on the pitch… He was world class when United had the ball, and when the opposition has the ball he was our best defender.” - Wilf McGuinness
“I am convinced that Duncan would have been a fixture in the England team well into the 1970s. Whatever was needed in a player, he had it.” - Sir Matt Busby
“You don’t hear many professionals talk lightly of greatness because it is so rare, but that is what I saw in Duncan Edwards the first time I set eyes on him. He reached the same fabulous standard at left-half, centre-half, inside-left and centre-forward. He is the kind of player managers dream about.” - Don Revie
“When you took Duncan out of the England team, you took half the side away.” Nat Lofthouse

      In a World XI Jack Charlton wouldn't quite make it, only Moore & Franklin of English CB's would have a chance maybe Billy Wright to. Duncan Edwards brings the steel & maybe more so than any player ever. He could cover every blade of grass & with great power & aggression in the tackle.

    My grandfather always said that had Edwards lived, England would have 3 world cups. 1958, 1962 and 1966. I believe him. What a talent Edwards was. Biggest single loss to football history, ever.

  • @Ambienfinity
    @Ambienfinity Před 2 měsíci

    Matt Busby simply said of Edwards: . “In Duncan Edwards, I believe I have the greatest footballer in the world,” and he wasn't wrong. Fast, skilful, strong, brave, fair, hard working, intelligent, humble, always willing to sign autographs. As a player he covered the whole pitch, a natural leader, a gentleman. Edwards played youth games, reserves, for the Army, and the first team - he played 90 games a season in the run up to the ill-fated European Cup run of 1958, and cycled or walked back to his digs from Old Trafford. We will never see the likes of him again. What a tragedy he was lost far, far too soon.

      @@tt99football56 Absolutely. That generation of players were class, all the way. They weren't paid anything like the money they get now. Duncan got a carpentry apprenticeship as part of his contract with United, then he was on the ground staff. The Army would often demand he played games for them instead of England or United. Unique, for all time.

    From what I've been told by my grandparents and from what I've heard ex pros say, Duncan Edwards is the greatest player the UK & Ireland has ever produced and that includes George Best, Roy Keane, Paul McGrath, Jimmy Greaves, Dennis Law and the great John Charles. Having lived in Glasgow I know all about Slim Jim and I used to watch him gamble almost every night in a Casino in the early 1980's. He might have still been drinking in those days, but he was never any trouble and always quiet and respectful. Held in the same regard by Gers fans as Jinky is by Celtic supporters 👍

    We're seeing the end of brilliant footballers. Since spain and guardiola started dominating football they've little by little, eliminated individual prowess in favor of tactical compliance. Thats why modern football is so incredibly boring compared to past football. We will never see again players like cruyff, maradona, beckenbauer, di stefano, pelé, platini,. Now the best players in the world are mbappé and haaland, both good players who rarely show the imagination, skill and talent you'd expect from the best player in the world

Perhaps it's a bit premature to put that curse on him, but barring injury (please God, don't curse him like R9) he certainly has the talent. For the spaniards the best of all times was Alfredo Di Stefano. Period. And I think I have to agree with them” Its funny that in the interview Sir Bobby was asked: “Pelé or Maradona, who do you think was the greatest?” And the great english gentleman just answers what all the people in Spain knew without hesitation sixty or seventy years ago: the best was Di Stefano.
