Anecdotely, I still remember as a child of 11-12, Mariam Makeba came to my parent's house while she was in Princeton, NJ. We were having a party for African students in the area. She was sitting on my mother's red Victorian couch with my parents. That was back in the early 60s. I think she performed at the McCarter Theatre while she was there, maybe with Olatunji. Fuzzy memories. Interesting times.

Yes it does, jazz is a Black Art Form that realized it's highest development in bebop which required incredible knowledge, facility, athleticism, blinding dexterity and technical prowess, as well as a full understanding of the language of bebop. It's greatest masters were absolute virtuosos whose music was often fiery, driven, powerful and explosive. It cannot be reduced to a simple set of tame technical exercises learnt from a Barry Harris video put that produces little more than some tame watered down dinner music.

Funny, but when I was studying music back in the early 80s, I could, and had to, practice for hours. These days I just can’t sit that long, nor do I find any pleasure in such intense practicing. I wonder if other folks in their 60s have a similar experience?
