So much wisdom in this James Woods/Cosmo Kramer mashup of a man.
Don't forget the dude.
@@KeithNewtonWoodworking your very enjoyable to watch. I am a hobby level woodworker and love watching you work but your personality and constant wisdom keep me coming back!
That makita router had a family!
These are really great tips especially in regards to pricing your goods. People often forget to keep in mind the price of consumable materials focusing only on the raw materials.
That's not how you use 'POV'.
What's a pov
Thank you Keith for not doing the resin.
I’ve never been so riveted to find out what the wood was. Now I wanna see the coffee table 🙌
Love your attention to detail and a little help from your tools. Cheers from Cowichan Bay 🏝️🇨🇦👍
In which part of the world your shop is located? Thanks for sharing
Fresno Ca
What’s the story on your slab flattening machine? I haven’t seen that before?
Check through his videos. He has one on that. It’s pretty awesome setup
It's called a Wood Wiz. From Australia.
It's a woodwiz from down under. 20 years ago
@@KeithNewtonWoodworking A buddy of mine here in South Texas has the new version. he works mainly mesquite slabls.
Great points . I can usually hurt myself opening the door to the shop and moving slabs around . Jammed the same finger 3 times , 3 different ways today .
Good stuff. Thanks
I watch all your videos . Your the most real woodworker compared to all these youtubers with there fancy tools that companies send them for free. Thanks for all your information
Solid info.
Really common here in Brazil. But here the table is the one moving... very heavy with bog slabs like this.
I thought she did great
Best videos….. ❤❤ making my way through them all!!! More then half way Cheers from australia
I wish I would have known you when I lived in Visalia. Now I’m in Nor cal 🤦♂️
Impressive collection! Can you say what solution you were talking about and do you spray each piece after you mill it? And does it kill powder post Beatles? Thanks
Boeacare is used for killing the powder post Beatles before they become a problem.
What finish did you use? And what sprayer do you have? Enjoying watching your videos. I normally use rubio due to the dusty shop but you made this look super easy.
Hi Keith, impressive collection! Please do a vid on natutral finishes for soft and hardwoods!
Sheesh. That’s gonna be a heck of an estate sale 😂
There is still hope. I have 2 grandsons right next door ages 8 and 12.
I'm happily surprised to see that wood can be stored in the open elements like that. I always thought it was best to have some form of protection from rain and sun. Any snow in your area ? Wondering if that would have a negative impact on the slabs
The top slab may check in 10 years or so but not v deep enough to make any problems.
I'd drop by only I'm a little over 8000km from so...🤔🤓
Great stockpile by the way. 👍
A farm table maker near me had an issue with his dog getting sick and dragging his hind legs so he took him to the vet the other day. Vet said back injury and gave him meds to give him. Perked back up day or so later. Telling you this cause he’s curious to know if your dogs have ever had a reaction to walnut dust. He’s thinking that was the actual culprit. He said they have chewed on walnut before and never had an issue. Pretty sure if anyone would know it’d be you. He was milling that day so the dust was his concern.
Never had a problem. I grow veggies in compost made of it.
@@KeithNewtonWoodworking ok I’ll pass that on. I forwarded this video to him as always. I gave two big bags to the neighbor for his garden last year with no complaints. 👍
Wood hoarding 😂😂 Actually I’m guilty as well.👍🏝️🇨🇦
I'm 56 and I've stopped doing anything. Bad back and all.....I been living on peanut butter crackers. And rain water😊
I have a 40 years IT career experience in my backpack and one of the things I really want to get rid of is something called "commission" because there are so many pitfalls in it... clients that won't pay or will try to renegotiate the previously agreed price at the end, clients that will give up of the job and just disappear without dropping you a line, clients changing their mind and modifying entirely the project when it already passed the point of doing it, clients excessively picky that will drive you crazy with irrelevant details... I could stay adding items to this list the whole day. To not mention that the commissioned projects deadlines ALWAYS blow. Oh boy! Now entering in a new career as a woodworker I am not going to take ANY commission. Just produce stuff and putting it for selling.
I choose my customers better than you. Never have any of those problems. I just don't work for a holes. I have a hole radar.
Regular watcher and woodworker from Canada. I've learned a ton from your videos. Im currently making a coffee table out of black walnut, the top is a 4-way bookmatch w. crotch veneer and mitered 7/8" edging, what profile should i cut on the edging? Keep it up

I’m 70 and after fifty years as an Arborist, I would like to find a sideline woodworking product that I can produce. I subscribed to get an idea from you.
Have you always used a mask with a respirator with ear protection? I like to hear the tool I’m working with. Wear a mask when what I’m working with is too much of a cloud. You’re not to much older than :)
Any exposure to fine dust I can minimize I will. Yes, it is very stuffy but I can hear my tools just fine. I am wearing the ear protection so I can still hear the voice of my wife. 45 years on now and she is my true friend.
@keith, are you a marine(formerly active)? You have very distinctive facial features that most old marines have (whether you are or not)
Air force military police
Good channel! Commenting for the algorithm.
Much appreciated!
One of the best pieces of advise someone gave me was to stop giving my work away. They said “account for every penny you put into a project - materials, gas, tools, wear and tear, every thing you can possibly have needed to expend, then add your time, and add 20% and a lunch for each day you work.” I told them they were crazy and nobody would pay that, they then said “well then you’re in the wrong market or the wrong line of work” and encouraged me to give it a try. I’ll be darned if they weren’t 100% correct, I am now making way more money, and am way less busy. It’s amazing what you can do when your getting payed for what you deserve to earn and stop bending over backwards for people, my quality of work increased, my attitude increased and everything’s way better
I get it. Do your own thing. Obviously YOU don't have to make sales in order to survive. YOU are very fortunate.
I do have to make sales to survive. I have created a marketing strategy that works sometimes. I still have to keep my self in dog food , least the beasties starve.
@@KeithNewtonWoodworking I understand. Keep on keep'N on !
Can you share your design on the platform bed. I'm in the process of building one
I will do a bit on a bed.
I''m still amazed how 69 year old people look today. Great!
It's not the years It's the mileage.
Being a carpenter for about 50 years now, What this Gentleman says is true . Its a tough business , if Your in for the money . Ive built birdhouses, ladder back chairs for Children , footstools of several different styles. Show them to people and they always say how nice , beautiful or artistic , but very rare a sell . But i truly love the uniqueness of the hobbie .
You can get pigments to go in resin they cost a few dollars and could do multiple table with the amount of resin you use
But that resin table thing is loosing it attraction . A fad. The tables I make are not so faddy
How thick can you go with veneer before you run into new issues ? I have some pieces of wood that need to be resewn and book matched to be appreciated .
My veneer is cut at 1/42 of an inch.
Enjoyed the veneer viewing! Stay cool in this valley heat July has been a furnace !!
Keep ‘em comin Keith!!
Awesome content. I would love to see more about your tung oil finish (maybe a whole video about finishing?) There’s a lot of conflicting information about finish work on youtube and we would all love to hear Keith’s thoughts!
Great suggestion!
Just a wealth of information. Not to be disrespectful but I hope you have a succession plan for your knowledge, your gear and your one of a kinds in that shop.
Working on it!
69 year old that can still outwork todays 20 year olds.😂👍 Great content too camera man. Keep it coming
Thanks 👍
I work so that I can afford to do woodworking.
I do woodworking so can afford beer
Yeah , definitely making a living as a woodworker is not for the faint of heart .I knew when i was 15 years old i wanted to be a furniture maker but there were no apprenticeships available where i lived . I started as a carpenters helper and by the time i was 20 i became a pretty good carpenter . Then a job opened up in a cabinet and millwork shop and at 25 i was a foreman as well as doing layouts and building high end specialty millwork . A couple of years later i had my own shop and 35 years later i ended up with a couple of hundred thousand dollars in industrial woodworking machinery . If i had it to do over i would have taken a job as an outside salesman selling metal working lathes and milling machines in the oilfield country . Making a good living and doing woodwork in my free time .When you work as a professional you can end up killing the things you love .
Amor fati is a philosophy at my core.
I’m sorry sir, but I don’t much care for this rendition of woodworking. All of you watching this…..it’s one man’s perspective of the craft. I’m a 72 year old professional woodworker. I’ve worked this craft most of my life. I have been all over the map with this craft. I’ve made money, I’ve lost money, I’ve employed many people over the years, I’ve had multiple businesses in woodworking, and I know what it is like to go broke. So what! I love making things. I attribute my success and failures to nothing more than life’s journey and my personal journey of exploration and hopefully growth and self realization. Did any of you read life’s instruction manual before you incarcerated? If you did, did you remember any of it. Hell no you didn’t. Who does. Not sure I should enter this in the comment section because I like this guys musing and I don’t like critics of creative people’s philosophy. But you can make a living doing woodworking and it might be hard. So what!
Keeping it real.
I like that your work is not over the top crazy . Looks like furniture you can live with and enjoy , instead of show only pieces .
I make what ever the wind blows.
@@KeithNewtonWoodworking I like to build what I want , even if I don't need it for my self . Probably not a good business practice . But it all sells or can be used for fire wood in the winter .
Keeps me out of the 🍸
