Going Kemper Profiler and back | Why tube amp beats fake amp | Shootout Bogner Ecstasy 3534 vs. KPA

In this episode of CheckOneTwo Riffs & Gear we're gonna check out why real amps beat the Kemper Profiler in the long run! We've all once owned an amp. And most guitar players also tried the digital path of modeling or profiling. I've been a Kemper Profiling Amp user for many years and love the KPA for touring. But after having sold all my analog gear I know have come full circle to owning tube ...

    Good review, the only thing I would change, is comparing shorter phrases (with diff. tone), it is verry hard to remember the subtle detail we are dealing with here. I am a very experienced bass player and sound engineer, but just getting seriously into amp modeling\IRs\Modeling, so I bought the Captor (8-Ohm) yesterday.

With your videos for the attenuator i would go for the captor (I was looking to buy captor X), but for virtual cabs and other fonction I was going for the OX. So how much is the -20db on the captor actually? Does it make your marshall close to bedroom volume? I just need some attenuation for my 6505. I like the post gain on 11 o'clock so its very loud in an appartement. Would 20db be enough? I love the captors extra features vs a basic attenuator like the jettenuator

    To me the Ox sounded the same as the full signal while the Captor had loads of highs added, but my ears are wrecked through years of gigging lol. No way I would spend that kind of money on the Ox though so the neighbours are just going to have to keep on hating me... Good demo man, thanks - got another sub.

  • @robertgunter7230
    @robertgunter7230 Před 3 lety

    This is not fair at all... the centre frequency and q values are not the same. This is an invalid test.. your right about snapshot .. so snapshot the controls of your amp and you'll have the same sound...that you like .. you could have a few snapshots of your tube it's better than lugging your tubes around and cabs

    • @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear
      @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your comment. It’s kind of my point, as long as there’s a snapshot in your Kemper of an amp you own, it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Buying a profile of an amp from someone else and then tweaking it to your liking, you’ll loose the character of the actual amp… Would you agree?

  • @MrSpillify
    @MrSpillify Před 3 lety

    Have you tried diming the green channel's volume and using the gain knob to set your volume? It's not quite as warm and fat, but the top end clarity and articulation with that setting--especially with Pre-EQ set at B1 or B2--is absolutely unreal. Almost spanky if you want it to be. This amp is really something special.

  • @adamtoos
    @adamtoos Před 3 lety

    This was a great video. I couldn’t say I preferred either one honestly. The OX sounded dull and the Captor sounded too bright. I appreciated the content though as I am in the market for an attenuator at the moment. Thanks brother!

  • @bartlettpsj
    @bartlettpsj Před 3 lety

    What you're saying is very true and I would not expect the Kemper to respond like every amp on the planet. Even two amps, same model dont sound identical. One wierd observation I had was your Blue+ profile when the EQ was boosted, although sounded nothing like the real amp, suddenly sounded like a Soldano. And I liked it :-)

    • @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear
      @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear Před 3 lety

    what is the point of keeping the background track during the demo?

  • @bertbrause
    @bertbrause Před 3 lety

    My biggest problem with the Kemper was "There was always something wrong with the way it reacts to my playing", compared to my real amps. Recorded sound (feeling aside) was nice. But playing a real amp made me play better (thus sound better). Nevertheless great tool.

    • @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear
      @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear Před 3 lety

      I agree, I also tell myself I feel a bit of a difference in response, but then again there so many videos with blindfold challengers were great guitar players with a love for amps can’t spot the difference sooooo....

  • @guitarguru1758
    @guitarguru1758 Před 3 lety

    Thanks for putting this together. Most appreciated. Does the "Boost" also work for the Green Channel? I would love to hear some funky/slight breakup tones from the Green channel. Everything you played is very light tough and arpeggiated parts on the green channel (which is great) - just looking to see how dirty the Green can get. And of course, if the Boost works (and what that sounds like).

    • @stevemineer2857
      @stevemineer2857 Před 3 lety

      I think it only works on 2 & 3.

    • @MrSpillify
      @MrSpillify Před 3 lety

      In my three-ish months of owning this amp, overdrive can be difficult to coax out of the green channel unless you crank the gain and volume to animal-killing levels. The gain knob more fattens the tone, so the green channel won't do a bright, chimey/jangley edge of breakup thing. To get in that ballpark, I usually run the blue channel with Pre-EQ at B1 and gain at a bit above 9 a.m., and roll my guitar volume down just a bit to take the edge off; even then, it's more of a hairy "Plexi clean" rather than something like a Vox or Matchless. For choppy funk, though, I usually do the green channel with Pre-EQ at B1, volume dimed, and gain as my "master volume."

    Is it worth spending twice as much from 250 to 500 from the captor to the captor x. Or one of the other more expensive units ? I guess it depends if you need it live or not. 20db seems like it would be good for the peavey jsx live maybe. Idk

    • @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear
      @CheckOneTwoRiffsGear Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your comment Paul. The ability to load IRs in the Captor X is a nice feature if you need it. I’d say the attenuation will sound the same, hope to maybe demo that one day as well... But if you don’t do recording or want to give the IR signal to FOH from the captor X then I guess the normal captor will do the job for your JSX... #checkonetwo
