    Common Reckoning?

    • @jamesathertonyt
      @jamesathertonyt Před 17 dny

      The common reckoning is the system of numbering the years initially used by the Skeldings and which was later adopted by many of the peoples of Halfland. Year 1 of the common reckoning is the year that Skeld the Stormblown and his 50 ships landed at the mouth of the Silverstream. See the video "The Waters Rise" for more details.

    What if, instead of magic, your tolkienesque world has high technology masked behind a veil or façade of superstition? You could use a knowledge of science, electronics, computing, even quantum physics like string theory and quantum entanglement for some of that "spooky action at a distance". I forget the name of who it was that said it, and I'm probably butchering the quote: "any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic."

    • @jamesathertonyt
      @jamesathertonyt Před 27 dny

      @@bugslayerprime7674 In my setting Elves are not a different species. They are a tribe of humans who have a particular forest based, tree worshipping culture. Interesting. Almost all of my gaming is solo, with for me the narrative (even for one-off games) being key; I have to know why they my guys are on the field, doing what they're doing; the game alone is not enough to satisfy.. A campaign, of course, supplies its own narrative, reasons for an action etc. etc. I have made and used my own maps & different systems, and (as I see others below have) used board games (inc. commercial board games) as the basis for campaign and as "battle generators". My tabletop rules themselves are constantly evolving, to supply me with challenges; be those managing my own (sometimes recalcitrant) army or finding or fighting an "AI-controlled" enemy. Some of my ways/methods & thoughts are on my (somewhat random) blog (denyers.blogspot.com/2018/04/introduction-after-lot-of-interest.html), where I'm always interested in ideas, discussion & feedback.

    This series in a way inspired me to create my very own world. At the moment I need to do my dreaded task of coming up with a map for my continent, but I am willing to leave my comfort zone and draw something... maybe I will do that in combination with my planned bycicle ride tommorow... I have an exciting phase in my life right now where I just graduated job training last tuesday, began working a real damn job this week (for the first time in my life) and had to kinda get to grips with the reality that I won't see the friends I made in class from the last summer to now anymore every single day of the week, I know they will be the one very certain constant in my life from now on, which gives me more peace of mind then I can put in words tbh, but it feels kinda good to take a break from all that (very cool, yet still pretty exhausting) chaos in my life by literally getting into another world and not just another world, but one that only exists, because I thought it should. So yeah: Thanks for the insperation dude!

    This sounds fascinating, and is encouraging me to try out solo wargaming in an imaginary world of my own design. Not the lack of arts and crafts (I enjoy that part) but the flexibility and being able to make my own lore instead of depending on lore I want to take apart and redo because I don't like it the way it is. Probably use someone else's rule though - I don't have a clue how to write a rule set and no real interest in it.
