Transcript:
Slavery exists in full vigor, but we do not perceive it, just as in Europe at the end of the Eighteenth Century the slavery of serfdom was not perceived.
People of that day thought that the position of men obliged to till the land for their lords, and to obey them, was a natural, inevitable, economic condition of life, and they did not call it slavery.
It is the same among us: people of our day consider the position of the laborer to be a natural, inevitable economic condition, and they do not call it slavery. And as, at the end of the Eighteenth Century, the people of Europe began little by little to understand that what formerly seemed a natural and inevitable form of economic life-namely, the position of peasants who were completely in the power of their lords-was wrong, unjust and immoral, and demanded alteration, so now people today are beginning to understand that the position of hired workmen, and of the working classes in general, which formerly seemed quite right and quite normal, is not what it should be, and demands alteration.

"Identification with the self." Whose identifying with the self? Wouldn't that just be another self? My identity is Consiousness! That still feels dualistic: there's "me" and then there's what I identify with. "I" lost me sense of self? Then who am I? And if the self is an illusion then how can you identify with it much less lose it?

Listened till 5:22: 00, then went to Goodreads to see reviews. Since most refer to it in the horror category of sci fi I decided to stop, since things like Alien creep the heck out of me. But I was fairly interested and thought I was sort of keeping up with the scene changes and characters. The reading was pleasant. Thanks.

This is the living Socrates. Sapolsky is a smart man, but his ideas are complete nonsense. He ignores thousands of years of philosophy and comes up with his own idea of free will and disproves it. It's ludicrous.

Some people describe themselves as "redpilled". I've gone full circle and now just want to forget and live my life in blissful ignorance. What else can you do really? Either drive yourself insane trying to keep up with all the words ills or just focus on controlling the good around you, in your own little slice of the world.

In a funny way, this book (and a lot of Thomas Ligotti's work) has helped me immensely....I used to always wake up each day looking for a higher purpose, looking for the good in others, a connection with people and hoping that by having a big heart, i would somehow become fulfilled.. recently I got out of a 12 year relationship with a woman who I loved with all of my heart, missed, cried over, helped out, felt betrayed over, etc..only to recently (finally) discover that my love was never reciprocated, she in fact never did miss me and my love was only ever measured by the things I could offer...as soon as I needed help, became ill, or needed support; poof, she disappeared.. every time. Reading this book has made me realize, there really isn't an answer or ultimate "fulfillment" in life, there is no reward for being good or big-hearted, and there is no point in expecting anything like a meaningful connection or to find the good in other people. Now I say ; "f*ck it, I don't go out each day expecting anything good from the world or from anyone else, I'm just gunna be selfish, be isolated (master loneliness , because there's no point in having hope in connecting with others anyhow) and do whatever I want to do in order to feel these momentarily feelings oh "happiness". It's actually alot more satisfying than waking up each day filled with "hope", looking for the good that doesn't exist in people or in life, only to feel disappointed and exhausted at the end of each day. It's true that consciousness (as far as looking for a purpose or looking for good in others) is a nightmare, also having a big heart is actually a curse
