A Dog, A Van and A View
Registrace 24. 12. 2007
I retired in July of 2022. I sold my home in New Jersey and all of my possessions and purchased a Storyteller Overland Classic van. On September 16, 2022 I left New Jersey and started my full time journey to explore our country, do amazing hikes and capture many of those moments with my camera. Joining me on this adventure is my dog. Her name is Star and she's enjoying our travels as much as I am.
Walking Tour of Essex Steam Train Park

On Tuesday June 11, 2024 Star and I did a hike in Harriman State Park, NY. We did the Elk Pen and Island Pond Mountain Loop Trail. Hike length was 7.5 miles with 1,486' of elevation gain. Hike length was 4hr 23min. The park is beautiful and the trail was mostly easy to follow. I did download the map from AllTrails which helped a few times when we made wrong turns or came to a trail split. Had a...
Lake Ames, NJ - Drone Footage

I camped overnight next to Lake Ames in New Jersey. I bought a drone about two weeks ago and this is my first video using the drone. In this video I was trying out some basic maneuvers. It's going to take some more practice flying it and I need to make more changes in the settings. Music provided by: www.bensound.com/bensound-music/bensound-adventure.mp3

03/28/24 - After Star and I did a 3 1/2 mile hike near Dahlonega, GA I drove about 30 miles to the town of Helen, GA. I was totally when I got there that the entire town had a German theme. I left Star in the van, because she gets very exited meeting new people and she jumps on them and tries to lick their face. Most people don't like that and that's why she stayed in the van. I walked around m...

I visited Everglades National Park, FL on March 12 and 13, 2024. On the first day I hiked 5 trails. All the trails were short, less than a mile, and either paved or a boardwalk. The first trail, Anhinga Trail, had the most wildlife. I took pictures and included some in the video. On the morning of the 13'th I got up before sunrise to take pictures again.

Red Mountain Park Hike in Birmingham AL

Star and I hiked the loop trail for a total of a little over 5.5 miles. Didn't know any of the background about this park before we started. As we were walking I saw a sign about the railroad that was in this area. Then later saw infrastructure from an iron ore mining operation here. The mine was called Eureka 1. In 1864, Wallace McElwain built the Irondale Furnace (Cahaba Iron Works) and suppl...

The Valley Railroad is the name of the company that operates the trains. It and "Essex Steam Train" are the same entity. Also most passenger cars never had names, only special ones did.
Thank you very much for providing that information. And thanks for watching too.
Magnificent catches of the train coming by and pass, I like it 5 stars. Thumbs up. Keep up the perfect work, Rick, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
Thank you very much. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it.
@@RickS727 it was my pleasure, mate.
@@RickS727 the trains in your country are amazing
Awesome video
Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the fun walk along. I loved seeing the trains.
Thanks Mike and thanks for watching.
Great video Rick. They seem to have a lot of equipment and I hope that means they stay busy. Too bad you weren't allowed into any equipment.
Thank you Curt. I can understand not being allowed on the equipment. It's all about insurance and liability.
Great video, Rick. We never made it there, so it was good to see the equipment that they have. Their collection of center cab locos is pretty impressive.
Thank you Bruce. I just wish they had the two steamers out.
Thanks for the walkabout.
Mike, thank you stopping in and watching.
Boy, now you are really in my old stomping grounds! I see that the Mountain Laurel is in bloom. The drone footage is a great addition. Thanks for a great video, Rick!
Thanks for watching Bruce. I think I was more in your old stomping grounds last week when I was at High Point and drove through Milford.
Great video Rick and Star. There's a bit of scenery type for everyone. You could of used the drone to scout the rocks you were concerned about. Once Star saw it was ok she would of come willingly. Yep, I'm standing by that.
Thank Curt. I'll have to remember that next time there's a similar problem.
Rick, Great video and hike. Beautiful scenery also. Glad you and Star made it down the drop.
Thank you Tom.
What a lovely scenery man, this hike looks amazing!
Thank you and it was an excellent trail through some beautiful country.
Great video you sure learned quickly!!
Thanks Jerry, but trust me, I still have lots to learn.
Rick, looks like you’ve gotten the drone under control rather quickly. It sure gives a different perspective of the little world around us. Well done
Thanks Tom. I still need to do a lot more practice with it to get smooth professional looking video. It is fun to fly.
Excellent video, hello from Newport News Va
Thank you for subscribing and the nice words about the video.

Awesome share, hello from coastal Virginia. New friend here.
Thank you again.
Nice video and some great bird pictures.
Thanks Jerry
Very nice Rick. You have several bird types that I have never seen. The sunrise was beautiful.
Curt, thank you.
I enjoyed the bird and sunrise photos, Rick. It is always neat to see a swan's reflection in the water. The last time we were down there was to catch the Lewes Ferry to Delaware - always a fun ride.
Thank you Bruce. Glad you enjoyed the photos.
Awesome!
Thanks. Glad you liked.
Very nice Rick. I have never been there and I imagined it to be much more touristy in a small area than it appears to be. It's a shame no photography was allowed in the buildings. Always great to see Star.
Thanks Curt. That was one of the nice things I liked about it. There are touristy areas but they have their own area and the non touristy areas are much bigger.
Great video Rick. Looks like your had a beautiful day to tour the grounds.
Thanks Jerry. It was a beautiful day.
Brings back great memories, Rick. The last time we were there was when our oldest granddaughter graduated from William & Mary.
Thanks Bruce. It was a fun visit.
I’ve always wanted to go there. Give Star a pat for me.
It's well worth a visit.
Enjoyed the visit and update on the museum.
Thanks Mike
wuf wuf!😍
Star says thank you. 🙂
Rick, such a great video. I've been to Corolla before, but you showed some things I hadn't seen. It was nice meeting you in Williamsburg yesterday. I hope you continue to have great adventures.
Thank you Susan, it was a pleasure meeting you as well. I watched one of your videos yesterday and enjoyed it.
Another great video Rick. When you were driving on the beach it looked like it went on forever. I also enjoyed the older style architecture.
Curt, thanks for watching. The 4X4 beach is 11 miles long. I did all of it except for the last 1/2 mile.
Thanks for the tour Rick
Tom, thanks for watching
Rick, seeing the beach in off season when you can drive on the sand brought back great memories. Bonnie & I owned a house on Bogue Banks (the next coastal island south of the Outer Banks) in the town of Emerald Isle and often went down there in the off season. I'm not sure where you are headed next, but the towns of Beaufort and Swansboro on each end of Bogue Banks are both lovely. Yana's Cafe in Swansboro and Clawson's in Beaufort were both great places to eat.
Bruce, thanks for watching. I won't make it down that way this time. After I leave OBX I'm going to keep heading north. Thanks for the tips on those places.
Hope your body heals well, so you can adventure to the outer banks!
Thank you. Had the last procedure yesterday and feeling good. If my mail arrives at the PO today I'll start heading east to the Outer Banks.
No trolls ? No internet access 😅
Good one Karl. 😁
Great video Rick. Star sure liked the playing in the water. Is the blue thing on her back part of the leash or a water dish?
Thanks Curt. Her playing in water is relatively new. When I first got her she didn't go near the water. The blue thing is her water bowl.
Sorry that you had that kidney stone episode, Rick. Hopefully it is behind you now. Bonnie and I have poked around the Raliegh area a few times. I have a cousin who lives in Cary nearby. Nice area, and nice hike!
Thanks Bruce. I'm feeling close to 100% again. Not looking forward to the next and last procedure but I'll be very happy when it's over. I'm very impressed with how beautiful NC is. I can see why many come here to retire.
Rick, Nice video and thanks for the showing of the ACL E6 diesel locomotive. The E6's were all numbered in the 500 series. The purple color is Dupont Royal Purple. It was a nice color and faded badly in the southern sun. The saying was, "If you don't like the deep purple, wait a month and it will be much lighter and faded."
Tom, I was happy to see it and knew I had to add it to the video for you.
Great video Rick. There is a lot of neat equipment there.
Thanks Curt. They do have a good variety of equipment on hand.
Rik, Bonnie and I have not visited this museum, so I enjoyed the tour and your narration.
Thank you Bruce.
You end up in some interesting places 👍
Thanks Mark. That's always the goal.
great video thanks so cool
What a nice little town, Rick. In our travels, we have come across a number of 'German Towns', but missed that one.
Thanks Bruce. This is my first town like this. Maybe I'll run into more.
@@RickS727 When/if you get to Washington State, there is the German town of Levenworth and nearby a Dutch town of Lynden. Of course, when in Michigan, there is Frankenmuth near us.
Looked like a great day for a walk in the woods, Rick.
Thanks Bruce. Yes, it was a beautiful day.
Nice video Rick. Star seemed excited by something at one point..
Thank you. That was when we saw the deer.
Florida is so different then being out west. Still visiting the National Parks vicariously through your videos is enjoyable, thanks Rick…
Vastly different than out west. Everglades surprised me. I thought it would be a big swamp but it's mostly wet grasslands. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
Loved it
Thank you Tom

Nice walk through. Hope you get the sunrise pictures tomorrow.
Thank you. I got one decent picture at sunrise.
Fun to watch Star exploring this interesting farm.
Thanks Mike. She was good for the most part.

Interesting stuff you saw along the trail. The weather looks great there.
There's Jerry!😁
Jerry, the weather has been great and those things I saw were totally unexpected.
Thanks for sharing Rick. Looked like a nice easy hike for Star and you.
Thank you Tom. It was much easier than the mountains we climbed out west but still a nice day out hiking.
