I'm not very fast at forging and it usually takes me 2-2 1/2 hours to forge a blade with the majority of that time going to thinning and drawing out the length from the thicker piece of material that I start with. What kind of steel and how thick?
@@craigcook1571 A piece of leaf spring 3/8" thick and approximately 7 1/2" long by 7/8" wide. TC
I like how dark it is too, looks like most originals I have seen.
Nice looking additions and that dark color really sets it right!

Love the rifle in general and the work you did on your own. Never heard the connection between Hawkin and the 1803 but thank you for that insight. Makes sense. The 1803 is my favorite rifle. Owned an Italian made 😞 disappointed, not a good shooter, carried it as a prop at camp. Love to acquire a good one.

.32 caliber or 146 balls to the pound as it would have been commonly known in the 18th and early 19th centuries. TC

Thanks for asking. I built it from a parts kit from Pecatonica River Longrifle Supply. I have to say, that was the hardest gun I've built until the one I'm building now. TC

Have a 1803 Harpers Ferry put together from a kit from the Rifle Shoppe outside OKC, came out great. I use a .530 ball patched with pillow ticking and seems to be the ticket for my rifle. Liked the way this kit turned out so much that I want to acquire a 1817 Common Rifle kit next. Thank you for the history lesson on its' use on the Missouri River in the 1820's, I had not heard that before. - John Hunt
