See, here in EU we have rather strict emissions legislation, that quite frankly, causes lots of headaches to manufacturers. You see the same thing happening in the motorcycle industry, where top-line supersport bikes are discontinues as the challenge to make products that appeal to sport and supersport enthousiasts and still be compliant very very hard. I don't know how this plays out in the US, but I reckon it would be more or less the same issue. Still I'm glad I can get my hands on one, since I loved this car form it's very origin when I was a kid. And even though my 2009 version has a lot of reliability issues, the heart wants what the heart wants I suppose.

They did a VR6 Syncro in the UK so they did have a proper Mk3 R 4WD here.

I'm 81. The 1967 Karman Ghia I drove while in the Air Force in the late sixties is my favorite car ever. You could very easily heel and toe shift it. It had front disk brakes. Thanks to both I avoided killing a Mexican field worker blindly crossing the road in front of me. I was going 60. I dropped to stopped on a dime heeling and toeing the down shifts and using the front disk brakes. He just finished crossing. Don't think he ever noticed me. I adjusted the valves every 1000 miles, a very important engine need because it's air cooled and the time the valves are seated, transferring heat, is very critical. I also cheated and advanced the timing a little which made that 30HP respond instantaneously. I learned later in life as a VW employee that the 1967 "beetle" engine was totally devoid of defects. The only engine year ever to achieve that. I am so happy that I had one to enjoy in sunny southern California.

This will be far more expensive than the space shuttle to repair when it starts to break down.

You forgot to mention the 2010 Touareg TDI V6 3.0l R Line . With similar equipment as the R50 but without the V10 and wheel arches. Unofficially VW NA brought around 30 units of those.

​@ThreePedalGarage Bro the engines out of the gen1 R8 the BYH motor which is a 32v V8....(R8 Dry sump BYH(CNDA) & RS4-B7 Wet sump BNS). Where did you get s4-b6 being the same? It's a 40v V8 for starters... or are all 4.2l Audi V8's the same because of the V block, 8 cylinders & being 4.2l... The BNS engines are put out @ near peak performance for an NA which is why you can't really push more but being forged motors you can just bolt on turbo's or supercharger & go... could you do that with all the Audi 4.2l engines?
