Kentish Tales and Tales of Kent A Season on Spies, The Secret Agent from Sheppey Sonia Butt/d'Artois
Instead of looking at devilish German spies landing on the fair shores of Kent we instead look at Kentish spies (spies from Kent) parachuting into occupied France. This is the story of Sonia (or Sonya) Butt (later d'Artois) who despite being barely out of her teens landed in France to raise and train resistance and sow chaos among the Nazi ranks. one of the oldest conspiracy theories goes that when peter returned to Russian no one recognized him, he was a foot shorter and looked nothing like the original peter, his family were kept away as they claimed it was not him, the personality of the new peter was a lot more serious and political and he indulged courtiers the original peter had despised...replacement czar just like the current putin who looks nothing like the original putin and who's wife ludmilla was suddenly ejected from russia and divorced without a word of explaination
Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition
It would be better if you were to narrate some where more quiet it could be interesting but not getting much information as you always talk where there are a lot of background noise and I for one get bored trying to to hear what your saying 😡
Do You know the location of the battle of Otford?
As a former Borstal boy (growing in the village rather than resident in the institution) this was very interesting and much appreciated. There is much history around the village and its environs now sadly lost. The fort at the top of the village in particular has a fascinating history.
Thanks, fascinating stuff. Just working my way through your videos. Rather think it might was also have been a missed opportunity not to reference the Mermaid Inn and the Rye connection which is where the main base of operations for the Hawkhurst gang was said to be. The Mermaid is quite a place to visit in and of itself. They appear to have had the run of both places but obviously Rye being on the coast might have been more crucial? Goudhurst is a great place especially when you can actually get in the Star and Eagle. Me and my other half used to love going there and were lucky to be in town on the one day of the year they open the church and you can get to the top of the tower. Fantastic views up there - 360degree panorama.
Very interesting. As a local raised about 2 miles from Kits Coty its great to see a video on it. There is a lot of history in the area but sadly is little more than myth. Alongside the battle of Aylesford of course there was the Battle of Medway said to have taken place a mile up the river at a place called Burham. There is a stone there to commemorate it and its site is by an ancient Church on the river bank. The 2 battles were separated by 400 years - the battle of Medway against the Claudian invasion in 43AD and the final chance to prevent the Roman's crossing the river and moving on to London. This battle appears to have been between those looking to exploit the vacancy left after the Roman's departure but were both pivotal to the history of both Kent and England. Great stuff thanks for posting.
Excellent video , new subscriber from THE MAN OF KENT 💥🍻🍻🍻
Though born, bred and schooled in Maidstone, I don't recall being taught any of this in the 1960s!
Interesting thankyou can't wait to watch more
What is a county town?the first history bit is far too quick although simply said. As I don’t know enough about it. It is amazing to walk in footsteps of history. Can’t help thinking about that in Maidstone.although I literally still have no clue what on earth happened hence why I’m here
Smuuglin', nowts changed. If it was still rum I'd move further south....nowadays, got no need of more people. Just happened across your videos and enjoy them. Thanks. By the way, coincidence, but I'm watching this on April 18th!
Thanks for watching!
Hi sir, really interesting video, my uni friends loved it 😂 Really nice to be taught by you again after all these years! Hope to see another video soon :) - Sasha W
Very kind. Working on more at the moment. How is your world?
@@crozieronstuff4006 sasha has turned into a character by Dick Bruna. She needs saving. I also really enjoyed the video! But it's been eight months, make some more please.
I had to google dick Bruna. I have lots of plans but not much time at the mo. But come the summer I will unleash some more.
Nice to hear the history of stuff up the road.
When I first started looking into my ancestry, I never expected to have something this cool that happened to some relatives! My 5x great grandfather was the Edward Wraight buried in the church yard, and my 4x great grandfather was the Edward Wraight that went on trial!
Blimey.
Ditto
I've traced my lineage to Reginald Fitzurse and have found the story fascinating. Would you mind explaining how Reginald Fitzurse was the great grand nephew of Henry the 1st? The parents, etc. I'm having a bit of a hard time finding that information. Thank you so much for this video!
Edward wraight was my 5th great grandfather and was one of the unlucky labourers to be killed
He's my 5x great grandfather too! I'm related through Edward's son's (also Edward) daughter.
There's an Italian neo-nazi running a cupcake shop in Margate nowadays too
What a great jacket
Thanks ever so much. I spent many years searching for one like it. It makes me feel like an undercover cop in the 1970s who is about to crack a case but not by playing by the book.
I always love seeing the little jokes in the credits and this episode had the best one so far. Thank you for your sacrifice 🙏
Not a problem it was very nice. At the time. Later, less so.
Yay kent
That is what I always think!
Love these vids. can you do something bout Leeds Castle?
Most kind. I shall see what I can do
Wonderful, Ben! Thank you! And, yes, it was essential to use Del Boy and Rodney!
Thanks ever so much. I thought it was key too!
I enjoy your work so much. You give energy to what can be thought of a crusty old subject - not by me though. Thank you so much for your hard work and humour 😘
That is very kind of you thanks ever so much.
How lovely is this ! Thank you ❤️ Love your presentation skills too.
Thank you
Another fabulous tale! Thank you, Ben!
Thanks ever so much
Thanks for adding this. As I mentioned previously, my 9th Gt Grandad and 2 of his brothers were killed on 1 June 1648 in the battle. As they were local farmers, I assume that they were fighting for the Royalists (obviously not very well!).
Hardest fought battle in the civil war. So I reckon they probably did themselves proud
Can you tell me is there an army list for royalist soldiers in this battle, l am looking for a Thomas Rose ?
I fear there might not be one. The defenders of Maidstone were a mixture of all sorts brought together quickly. Not sure if there is an army list for the parliamentarian side. I shall keep searching
@@crozieronstuff4006 Many thanks, Much appreciate. Thomas Rose's son John was Baptised in St Margarets church Hucking in 1660, above the entry of his baptism is writen placed in the care of the church because of Rebellion.
Thoroughly enjoyed this... wish I had seen you filming in Tovil (you were more or less opposite my house) I'd have nipped out with a brew for you :) Battle of Maidstone is a passion of mine. I have also heard rumours that Jack Cade also visited maidstone and murdered the archbishop here apparently hanging the body of him and his followers in the orchards within the Palace before storming London and famously striking the London stone... reckon that would make a cracking tale! :)
Thanks ever so much. A brew would have been good! Cade is on my list. I plan to do a season on rebellions of which Kent has had a fair number.
@@crozieronstuff4006 most welcome, yeah we have ever been a riotous county! (Hardly surprising considering the preponderance of hops and beer making that went on! Could I also make a cheeky request that you might perhaps consider covering the Hawkhurst gang on a future episode? There is a lovely little story about the capture and lynching of highwayman Jack Diamond at East Peckham church who was a member of the gang!
The plan is for the next video to be on the battle of goudhurst when the hawkhurst gang took on a whole village. I shall seek out that story. I like your theory on beer and hops. It makes perfect sense.
Aww, so fabulous to see my home town and its battle history. Thank you, Ben! East Farleigh bridge aint too bad of a place to get run over.
Thanks ever so much. If I had to choose one place to be run over it would be East Farleigh bridge mainly because I could then plunge dramatically into the Medway. Then hopefully someone would write a folk song about me.
Lived in East Farleigh in 69 just beside the bridge ...lovely location, and fond memories....Ireland
Some big battles too in Wayfield Chatham, more modern era though😉.
Great video thanks for the upload.
Thanks ever so much

Thanks ever so much. I have not seen the blood stone I shall put it on my list to hunt down. Toodlepip from Kent!
@@crozieronstuff4006 See the sun go down on it. The blood red colour comes out .
So many varieties of apples have sadly vanished, with the long gone orchards that once made Kent "the garden." Thanks for telling us about Teynham.
Thanks. All the fields around here seem to be being turned into vineyards.
Really does suck to hear about Steve. I don't think his part in these videos could ever be replaced, not even by the kids who seem to act with his same silly and nonsensical devotion for each role. He really did add a perfect amount of goofy charm to each role without ever ruining the portrayal. He will be missed :(
I hear you. I don’t think his level of enthusiasm will ever be replaced. Even when really ill he was always keen to roam the hills dressed in a ludicrous fashion.
lovely video! :)
Thank you and have a merry christmas
@@crozieronstuff4006 you too! :)
Good stuff... If you're going to cover the battle of maidstone you should try follow its route! Start at Farleigh Bridge, where the first bit of resistance was quickly dealt with... follow it down through tovil, again a little skirmish at Tovil Bridge (where the play area is) onto Old Tovil Road and out into stone Street. Down to Gabriel's Hill up through week street and finally where the surrender was given in St faiths Church Yard. Other points to note.. ALL SAINTS CHURCH saw some vicious fighting as the cavalry tried to hit the flank of yhe defence.. You can still see musket balls and gouges in the stonework in places from the ferocious melee. TONBRIDGE ROAD AREA where Fairfax had sent a recon force to hide in the fields and woods and observe town defences... where they could see the big cannons pointing everywhere. THE THIRSTY PIG PUB is an old farmhouse that acted as a field hospital during the fighting. Hope this helps!
If you are telling me I have to go to the Thirsty Pig then I will follow those orders. I have always loved that pub.
@@crozieronstuff4006 hahaha was my local for years back when Graham ran it... it is even said to be haunted by a cavalier upstairs I believe. Thoroughly enjoy your vids, wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas
