When I watched this show a long time ago, I strongly got the impression that air was the most powerful, a legendary element. Why else would they make all the airbenders extinct and refer to Aang as "the last airbender"

One thing I will point out is that the Kyoshi novels also show that ancestry isn’t necessarily the definitive factor, so much as it is bending ability. Considering Kyoshi was half Air Nomad, and yet she was born with the ability to Earthbend. So, it seems as long as a person has inherited the ability to bend the current element in the cycle, they can be the Avatar.

The whole genetics thing doesn't apply to airbenders. As far as I know, the reason airbenders have bending is because of how the air nomads lived their lives, there's no genetic selection involved
