Wall-E and The Wonderful Disaster That is Humanity - A Retrospective
This is a video essay / retrospective about the movie WALL-E (2008). In this video, I discuss why I think WALL-E is one of Pixar's best films, mainly focusing on the key characters of the movie such as Buy N Large, the Captain of the AXIOM spacecraft, Eve, and WALL-E himself. WALL-E has been alone on earth while humanity is hiding from their problems in space. He has been absorbing and mimicking human culture. All he knows of humanity is what was left behind. He romanticizes about what humanity once was, he watches old movies and listens to old music, all while living on a world that was destroyed by mankind. This movie shows us the destructive potential we have, but it also shows us how wonderful humanity can be. In a world where humanity has lost its spark, focused purely on survival, it's up to two robots to teach them how to truly live once again.

    The moment the MCU became mediocre in my opinion is when they made every damn movie a "guardians of the galaxy". What I mean by that is that it seems like after guardians of the galaxy, every MCU movie became a big colourful space adventure comedy. That works for the guardians of the galaxy but not for shit like Thor or Hulk.

      I don't think that would be good for the overall health of Pirates of The Caribbean. These movies are four quadrant, appeal to the masses type of productions. That doesn't mean they have to be generic slop but I just think going for a story in that kind of a niche wouldn't be successful. I'm honestly fine with that story being largely left to interpretation. I feel like we got what we needed out of the little bits they gave us in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. What you're describing doesn't sound like something that can even use the title "Pirates of The Caribbean". How could you possibly stamp that name on a movie like that? and if the answer is 'you can't', then Disney probably aren't going to make it. Yes, I'm sure they want to tell good story's, but they also want a decent profit.

    Dead Men Tell No Tales is definitely the worst Pirates film for me, and one of the reasons for that is the new writer that was hired to write the film; Jeff Nathanson. The first 4 films were all written by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, and Rossio wrote a first draft of a script for Pirates 5 in 2012 (even back then it was titled Dead Men Tell No Tales), which has been posted on the internet in recent years. After reading it several times, i've come to realize that if you develop it further, it could've definitely been a good movie, but apparently the reason it was rejected because it had a female villain in it, which Johnny Depp thought was redundant because the film he starred in 2012, Dark Shadows, also had a female villain. Rossio's script did have familiar characters besides Jack, Barbossa and Gibbs, but these were mainly the supporting characters from the original trilogy, such as the crew members of the Black Pearl, and even Philip, Syrena and majority of Queen Anne's Revenge crew were also back in the film, it would have included more Mermaid lore, and there was no Will, Elizabeth and their son, and no Barbossa suddenly having a daughter.

    • @TableCreed
      @TableCreed Před 4 dny

      I think even with that script, it would have just been another Pirates 4. The thing about the original trilogy is that it had Elliot, Rossio, and Gore Verbinski in the writers room. When it was just Elliot and Rossio, we got On Stranger Tides, which was fine, but nothing special. Maybe I'm giving Verbinski too much credit but the movies had that special something when he was involved.

      But it's not like Jack just suddenly took up drinking alcohol in Pirates 5. He was a pretty big drinker before that, and it never altered his character too much. You could make the argument that he's just lost his purpose and that's why he's so weird in that movie, but idk, he doesn't even seem to be thinking at all. Like, why did he just let the Black Pearl sit in a bottle for years when it seems pretty common sense to go ask Barbosa to free it? Glad you liked him but I hate what they did to Jack. He's not even the same man anymore. It wasn't character development in my eyes. They just didn't understand why people liked him in the first place and wrote him in a way that they thought people would like.

Sword of Cortez, the whole book is Jack on his own on a grand gallian. With the point of his sword, he could control the rigging, steer the ship, load and fire the cannons, as well as summon dinner. Here I thought they were adapting those stories. Nught. None of that. Borrowed elements from the books, but did nothing with it. And about Karina. I'll concede that Orlando Bloom wasn't totally in character. But he's barely in the movie so it isn't felt very much. The new characters werent GREAT but Carina is definitely one of the memorable parts. Shes smart, at least a little witty at times, and has clear cut motivations and growth as a character. I wouldn't MIND seeing more of her character in the future. But really it all boils down to how they handle Jack Sparrow and if Johnny Depp has it in him anymore to give a memorable performance as the character. If Jack is handled poorly, Johnny Depp can't do him justice anymore, or if the character is just outright not in the series anymore. The next POTC film WILL fail and that'll be a pitiful end of a franchise that deserves better.

    • @TableCreed
      @TableCreed Před 6 dny

      I think the Orlando Bloom thing is important even if it was just for a short amount of time, because it's fairly indicative of how little everyone cared while working on this movie. I find Karina to be insufferable. She's a know-it-all who puts herself on a pedestal. She struggles to even consider the possibility she might be wrong about something. They give her skillsets she has no business knowing, just to make her seem more capable. She apparently has the commanding presence to silence a wild crowd on a whim. Even at the end of the movie, what is this growth? That she isn't as annoying? Honestly, I think even Johnny Depp has lost sight of Jack Sparrow. If you look at him doing those public appearances dressed in character, he's just acting like a total goofball. Maybe that's just because that's more suited to public appearances but I don't know. Seems very odd.

      Thanks. I'm actually a little unhappy with it but I'm glad so many people seem to have enjoyed it. Wish I could have known it would have done so well. I would have re-recorded most of the narration.

      Would be very strange if I had a Dublin accent, I'll say that much. I don't really live in a place known for their distinct accent. I'm just glad you thought it was Dublin and not something worse. Won't name names but you know yourself.

    POTC didnt decline. Disney refused to let go of a cashcow. Sure the last couple movies were trash but POTC to me will always be the original trilogy and that one ride at disneyland in Tortuga. Nothing more.

      I mean, if I worked at Disney, I'm never letting go of that cash cow. I'd probably let it rest, feed it, and give it water, keep it healthy, but they just kept pushing it.

    The Pirates trilogy imbodies the Disney brand the most and is what every Disney movie should aspire to be Adventurous, funny, and imaginative as hell

      It definitely defines a certain era of Disney, but I think most people will think of Peter Pan, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and stuff like that when they think of what movies embody the company best.

    I was born too late to enjoy these in cinemas (2004) but I got to watch the 5th in cinemas and it hurts, seeing jack go from the smart but unpredictable guy to just a lucky drunk who is over sexualising women just isn’t jack sparrow My favourite will always be the second one as it just got the best story telling mixed with jokes

      You're probably right. A blockbuster looks very different now compared to back then. The movies we get now make the Pirates trilogy look like an extremely high budget indie film.

      @@2FRESH-4U Yeah, the advancements in technology has made people lazy in many ways. Studios think "oh, we'll just make our movie look nice and people won't notice how hollow it is", and then there's just the refusal to shoot on location, and having a 'fix it in post' attitude instead of just getting it right on set. If technology is used right, it can be great, but it can be a crutch.

    • @TableCreed
      @TableCreed Před 7 dny

      Yeah I agree. I think it's only really noticeable once I start talking about On Stranger Tides until the end of the video, but I do hear it myself. If I knew this video would have done this well, I would have re-recorded the entire thing. I was kind of impatient when it came to the recording process. Instead of getting a good take, I would just splice different takes together if I preferred the sound of a different one. I'm being much stricter now. I think my last two videos have been much better narration-wise. I'm using one take for each point or sentence, even if its not perfect. makes for a better listening experience. I'm honestly not happy with the narration in this video, but that just means there won't be such bad narration again. I'm working on another long video like this and I really think it sounds good. I'm putting way more effort into the actual recordings now, after this video.

    You could also argue that Salazar wasn't Jack's biggest fear when he gave away the compass in the second and third movies. I'm more concerned with how the fifth movie completely forgets Jack's established backstory. In the original trilogy, he had been a sailor hired by Beckett to transport slaves, Jack freed them so Beckett branded him a pirate and sank the Pearl, Jack made a deal with Jones to raise it back up in exchange for Jack joining his crew in 10 years, then at some point he got the compass from Tia Dalma and used it to find Cortez's cursed treasure, but Barbossa betrayed him and marooned him on an island. That was his backstory. You could argue that deleted scenes don't count as canon, but that only discounts the part about the slaves, and I'd argue that absolutely _should_ count as canon because it's the only explanation ever offered by any of the five movies for what Jack's history with Beckett is or why he needed to form a contract with Jones to raise the Pearl from the depths. But in the fifth movie, suddenly he was always a pirate who served on what would become the Black Pearl and some random guy gave him the compass and made him captain. What? It was explicitly stated in the second movie that Tia Dalma gave him the compass and that he made a deal with Jones to raise the Pearl back up and become its captain. We know that becoming captain was part of his deal with Jones because of the first scene where they interact. There's just no regard for continuity.

      @TableCreed Před 7 dny

      Yeah, you'd think if you were hired to write a Pirates of The Caribbean movie, you'd go back and watch the previous ones just to know what you have to work with, but they didn't seem too concerned about that. They didn't care about this world. They just had their stupid little story to tell and they didn't care about what came before. You'd think with these franchises, they'd have someone well-versed in the lore of the world to proof-read the script for any continuity errors. That seems like common sense to me. You can't pay some pirates fan a couple thousand dollars to go through the script?

      @@Bobb11881 Yeah, I'm aware of that, but I don't know if they were the head writer. It seems like there were a few writers on Pirates 5. I think there were two of the writers from the original trilogy working on Pirates 5. Who knows if they actually did anything or just got a writing credit because of prior work or maybe they just proof-read the script once in exchange for a writing credit. I don't know.
