Love this painting! Do you know he shows the seams on the back of the gown of the lady? I don’t see why the mirror could not exist. Mirrors have existed for thousands of years as polished metal. Still it is an interesting question to put to my glass blower friend. Another friend created this mirror for fun by cutting out the frame in wood, then buying a plain domed truck hub cap for the center, and small magnifying mirrors meant for truckers to put on their side mirrors in the outer spots. The domed central piece looks very real.

Most educated explanation of this painting I have seen. Brilliant.Since it is a painting about her and she died in childbirth, the extra cloth and her hand on top of her belly must have something to do with that. A normal dress would not have that much material in the front of the body, unless maybe it was a train gathered from the back. Still, it does seem to me some sort of symbology. It is indeed an incredible painting - I had no idea it was so small. Thank you so much :) 🌼🕯️🌷🌱

You nailed it. I have always found the contrast of clothes between the couple ominous. He, like a black raven even the huge black hat worn indoors looks unbecoming and the solemn grieved face looked all menacing and puzzling to me. I always thought that he carried some kind of ominous menacing prescience and that by comparison she looked like an innocent angel kidnapped by him. The contrast clashes with the idea of a happy united couple. Too bad we cannot compare with other couple paintings of that time, I cannot think of couples being painted until the 17th century by Fragonard, Bouché or Wateau. Now that i learned the truth about this painting it gives me chills and redeems the man which i always thought was some kind of rich dark personage. More details confirm your analysis. The chandelier is significantly brighter on the man's side but darker on her side. Then what about his right hand praying position missing the left hand clasping. He lost half of himself when she died. Maybe i start seeing too many things but even her hand fingers look in an odd position, i mean the last two fingers look contorted in an non natural position. Could this be an indication of the childbirth complications to come. And finally their hand holding is most unusual. He holds her hand from the back of her hand while her palm is pointed to heaven. I now find this painting very sad and moving but beautiful. I like the humility and polite reserve in it. The scene seen in the mirror shows a large bench by the window facing the bed and on it something shiny like precious metal, i cannot identify the object. I bet it has another symbolic meaning.

Worth checking out the The Hockney Falco thesis, advanced by artist David Hockney and physicist Charles M. Falco. 'Both argued that advances in realism and accuracy in the history of Western art since the Renaissance were primarily the result of optical instruments such as the camera obscura, camera lucida, and curved mirrors, rather than solely due to the development of artistic technique and skill. Nineteenth-century artists' use of photography had been well documented.'
