Hi everybody, we are Antonia and Richard, a couple who live in Dorset, UK.
After extensively travelling around the UK camping and painting, Antonia is a professional Artist, in our Land Rover Discovery 4.
In 2022 we randomly decided to drive across Europe to spend a month camping in Bulgaria and fell in love with it !
So much so that whilst there we ended up driving around the villages south of Veliko Tarnovo in central Bulgaria looking at property for sale !
We are now the proud owners of a second home which is a 300 year old very Bulgarian very basic property in the Elena Region.
Please join us as we continue to explore Bulgaria and hopefully the surrounding countries and with any luck Antonia will produce some paintings of the extraordinary landscapes we find ourselves in .....

Why Velingrad sounds Russian to you? Because it rhymes with Stalingrad?
I guess so. "Grad" obviously is slavic for town or castle etc but we automatically associate it with Russia. It was meant as a joke !
Yes I have been there hiking with groups - as Bulgaria and Greece are not to good friends it is a quite isolated area with few passages over the mountains. There are a lot of black money invested in ski resorts from Sunny Beach at the Black Sea. Was the purpose only to wash black money? Few ski-resorts that really work anyway.
Yes, it's a fascinating area for many reasons !

Hi, we only just discovered that Bulgaria has a national Cyrillic alphabet day and the history behind it. We look forward to exploring more of the Rhodope mountains.
The village of Sarnitsa is very interesting: it's population consists of ethnic Bulgarians, but whose religion is Islam. They are called Pomaks. Sometime in the 15-16th century, the Ottomans got very ambitious and decided to convert the whole Bulgarian population into Islam. They started from the most Southern parts, of course. Some villages gave their lives and died Christian. A couple of villages agreed to convert to Islam and preserved their lives. So, they are ethnic Bulgarians, but Muslims. In the area where you live - high in the Balkan range, and far from the Sultan, they never saw much slaughtering as those people near Turkey.

Strandja is a stunning place, not known in Europe and is free of tourists outside of the boats on the rivers. It's a very unique ecosystem and that's why it's protected. Also, the villages and people are simply amazing. Fantastic video, thank you 👍

Your place really looks romantic with this well preserved Bulgarian stile house. You have so many different kinds of trees that you need a special drawn scheme to know them, to care for them and eat the fruits. Nice! If you have good neighbours with whom to drink bear it will be perfect.

Thank You Both for your posts. Very interesting. How many square metres is Your property? It requires lot of maintenance ! If the perimeter fence is sound could You enlist a local shepherd to graze the grass a few times? The shepherds usually stay and watch the flock , unlike England. Best Wishes to You Both
Thank you for your kind words. The property is just over 2000 squ. metres. Unfortunately the fence is not sound all the way around but it's an interesting idea especially with the farm just down the road !

Born in the UK, I lived in the US for 25 years. Now I'm back and the ridiculous rules and system have made me think I might as well keep on moving, probably to the former Eastern bloc in search of freedom. "Don't harm people", that's a fine basis for laws. "Be what we consider well behaved", not so much.

If you mean why did we leave, because the UK is no longer in the EU we are limited to 90 days in Bulgaria, of which we did 89 !
