Hi, I'm Cassie! I love to play viola, teach music, and run with my pup Orlie (she's the cutest Samoyed you'll ever meet!). I have a doctorate in viola performance from the University of Maryland and have taught strings for the last 20 years in colleges, public and private schools, and privately in my own studio.
I live for those "lightbulb" moments, and believe that everyone is capable of playing an instrument.

Hey I have a quick question during the plucking of notes b c sharp and d my string does not make a sound what should I do
My initial thought was that you might not be pressing your left hand into the strong firmly enough. Imagine squishing into a marshmallow with the tip of your fingertip. They should depress the string into the fingerboard gently but firmly. Let me know if that fixes the problem!
Ms. Cassie you are a very great violist, and teacher. I love your videos, (yes, I am subscribed 😏) and the way you walk through the scales, songs, and exercises is like money other. A lot of respect 👌🏼💯 you have really helped me in my learning the viola and how to do vibrato, scales, fingerings, and bowing. I still have a long way to go, but your videos make my playing possible 😉 Thank you very much. (I have a question. Could you possibly do a few vids in the future explaining 2nd, 3rd, and 4th position, unless you already have...?)
Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm glad these videos help! I can definitely make a video on the different positions! Is there anything in particular you're looking for advice on, or just a general explanation?
Thank you, your slower version is just what I needed!!
I’m so happy it helped!
Just got a viola and even with a shoulder rest it is slanted (not the scroll pointing up or down, the right side is slanted down a bit when I hold it) am I holding it wrong, or is this fine?
if it looks similar to the position of my viola, you're fine. The viola should be parallel to the floor or slightly down towards the floor. If it is slightly tilted towards the center of your body that's ok too! I hope that helps
Thanks!
Love your vids but your arm right arm positions are sometimes 'out with the frame shot' so it is not possible to see what is going on.
thanks! If you have a specific bowing question, I'm happy to answer it. Feel free to email me at cassie.sulbaran@gmail.com
These exercises are fantastic and just what I have been searching for. Thank you for sharing them.
You're so welcome I’m glad they help!!
THANKYOU for the help! Been trying to learn And you made it letter for me
Glad I could help! Please let me know if there are other other videos I can make to help you!
Very helpful as always, and I keep meaning to say just how much I love the sound of that Hiroshi Iizuka viola!
Me too! I just love my viola❤️
Helpful! ty!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, as always, Dr. Sulbarán for these play throughs. They greatly help this aged violist who currently can't afford a teacher.
You're welcome, I'm so happy these videos help!
You are such an excellent teacher. I pray I can find someone like you.
Wow, thank you! I’m so glad you found the channel!
Thanks so much for explaining about the fingers.

i just bought a used viola yesterday and took to a violin shop to be set up -- i won't have it back until next week. i haven't played for 50+ years but i'm very excited about doing this!!!!
That is so wonderful and exciting! Welcome back, it’s never too late to start anew!
you are going to fast for the songs
You are great teacher. I wish I would have had a teacher like you.
thank you so much, I'm so happy you are enjoying the lessons! Please let me know if there are any specific topics I can cover that would help you!
I'm havin' a good time... How to read alto clef notes: It's treble clef, UP a step. (But... it's DOWN an octave!!!!) Who cares about down an octave?? Former professional French horn players know the tricks!!! Treble clef, up a step (G horn). Period. OR ... you could think of it as bass clef DOWN a step. Forget the octave thing. The space above the alto clef is the viola A. Think. Figure it out... Or just start on viola - and then it will be your home base. Professional French hornists who are also professional pianists have ALL THE TRICKS!!! Nevertheless, if they haven't paid their woodshedding dues to the viola, they will not be violists.
I had the same "tricks" when I started playing viola coming from violin. In the end, those tricks just confused me! Alto clef was the original clef- just remember that the middle line is middle C and base everything off of that! The lines are F A C E G (said in my head "face egg") spaces are G B D F (my 4th graders came up with Great Big Donut Fries and I love that one!).
measure 2 has a B on top. are you playing the chord with the C trill above as the starting note? if so, this is super confusing
Yes! In Baroque music we generally start trills from the note above. In this case, the printed note in B so our trill would start from C. I hope that helps!
thanks so much! i'd love to see a tutorial on the Prelude from the Bach Cello Suite 1
@@Karaokeroulettethat’s coming! I use the Simon Rowland Jones edition for the cello suites!
No I just played a wrong note oops!! Thanks for catching it, you have an excellent ear!!
Thank you for letting me know. I'm performing this tomorrow and getting nervous but slow practice is really helping me. Your sound is so clear and beautiful! I also listen to Tanja's violin version (in a-minor) and it quite different from viola in d-minor. I try to aim eighth note =120, with clear tone.... my weak spot is measure 63~64.... memorization may help? I'm depending on music too much.
Good luck I hope your performance went well! Remember, we are nervous because we care! The best way to get better at performing is to do more of it. Keep working slowly, video record yourself and watch it back, play for friends and family- you’ve got this!!
@@stringswithdrsulbaran Thank you for your support. I had a couple of mistakes but kept playing... ended all right. I learned a lot from mistakes. Yes, slow practice is best for me . Thank you!
This slow practice helps me tremendously! Thank you!! I have a question on measure31 on the 4th beat, where the 16th notes,A-Bb-C-D. I think you played A--B(natural)-C-D, which sounded more beautiful. Please let me know, you made it change or not. Thank you.
Hi Doc. great video, thanks so much, yes, myself and my daughter are trying to learn the violin etc. I like your session and your teaching performance and method. I hope we can get beyond Twinkle Twinkle little Star before she looses interest. I think if she can get one tune under her belt and she is rewarded enough to want to continue. However, first thing I had to do is show her how to lay down her phone!
Thank you! How cool that you're learning alongside your daughter! And yes, the phone can be addicting... There are also lots of great apps that can help motivate students to practice, too! My favorites are: Tonal Energy Tuner, CZcams (obviously!), Chet for ear training (the icon is green with a little piano on it), and the timer app found on most phones. I hope that helps!
Can you please give me the music notes in the staff. I'm learning notation. Thank you.
Thank you! I used to play in college, but stopped due to life’s challenges and work. Now, I am retired and want to play again. I'm starting from the beginning, but with your help I can do it!
Welcome back! If there are any additional videos, I can make to help you on your journey, please let me know!
Welcome back!! If you’re just starting back up again, a few shorter practice sessions a day is a better idea than one long one. Where are you located? I’m happy to recommend shops nearby or even online ones!
Hi!! You are a great inspiration to me as a violist. thank you!!! I had stopped playing for many years and 2 years ago I returned to the Viola which I had known since I was 8 years old. It’s been like starting from scratch, but little by little I’m catching up. How many times a day do you recommend me to practice? Also, Can you give me any recommendations of shops or luthiers for purchasing a professional viola? Thanks!
I really enjou taking your lessons. You have a nice way of teaching, even for someone from the Netherlands. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Anja!
Love your lesson. Thank you. 0:33 slow play through 6:04 fast play through
Thank you!
I played viola for years when young - I'm old now and going to start back up with this.
Welcome back! If there are any videos I can make that would help you, please let me know!
@@stringswithdrsulbaran Thank you - need to get the viola but will be back!
as the resident classical music fan at my job, I was peer-pressured to learn violin (between I prefer the way it sounds, and I like the bad orchestra jokes), but chose the viola instead. I like how at practice tempo, the Can-Can just resolves into Tortoise from Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals
I put the viola down in 2002 to focus on sports as i went into high school. Now at 35 I've bought a viola because i miss playing music. These lessons are very helpful in getting back into it. Its remarkable how much comes and i remember after 2 decades.
Welcome back! I teach high school and encourage my students to seek out opportunities to continue playing in college and beyond. I hope you find a local orchestra or chamber group to join, let me know if I can help with that!
Hey 👋, recently I have fallen in love with the viola, But there isn’t a viola teacher or music program for miles. Thank you so much for making a free, accessible, and simple program. So anyone can learn to play this beautiful instrument.
Thank you so much for your kind comments! That is exactly why I made this channel- free, accessible lessons for anyone who wants them! Please let me know if there are any videos I can make for you as you continue learning!
I just got my first viola a few days ago. Thank you for the lessons, but I'm still having trouble finding first position, except to move my hand close to the pegbox, and check the tuner while plucking to check if my first finger is on the right pitch. Do you have any advice so that I don't have to do the guesswork I'm doing?
Congratulations on starting viola! I use a silver colored sharpie to mark a line on the fingerboard where the first finger goes for my beginner students. The sharpie does not hurt the fingerboard, and it will wear off the more times you correctly place your finger in the right spot. Use the tuner to confirm the exact spot where your first finger is in tune, and using your other hand, mark a sharpie dot next to your finger. Using this as a guide, draw a line horizontally across the fingerboard. I would still recommend using the tuner to check, especially for beginner students. As your ear continues to improve, you will be able to find where first finger goes more confidently. I hope that helps!
Thank you so much. Just got a viola a week ago. Following your videos one at a time. Perfect. Q? After a practice my left arm hurts? Do I just to relax it more and watch my form?

Thank you, I love it too! The luthier is Hiroshi Iizuka
My teacher had the brilliant idea to have me play first violin. PRAY FOR ME YALL
how are you doing now😭
my viola does not yet produce a nice sound. could that because it without waxing it first. I ám your dutch student
Hi Anja! By waxing, I think you mean putting rosin on the bow? If so, the rosin is actually refined tree sap, and this is what causes the string to vibrate. If you have a new bow and have never rosined it before, you might need to apply quite a bit the first time. I hope that helps!
Thank you, @@stringswithdrsulbaran

I’m a multi instrumentalist but I’m just starting with viola and this one is the first song I can play on viola. It feels so good to hear it being played by me, tysm!!❤
That is so exciting, congrats on playing your first song!! Once you've become a true violist, there's no going back to those other inferior instruments🤣
@@stringswithdrsulbaran hahahaha fine… we’ll see
Great instruction style Cassie.
Thank you! Not sure I can help much with clarinet left hand issues!
Very helpful tips! I am placing my fingers on the tips. I struggle with finger placement and playing in tune. Do you have any videos that help with that?
That's half the battle! Are you practicing with a tuner or a drone? Are you singing the pitch before playing it? These tools will also greatly help improve your intonation. Lastly, if you are using the tuner make sure if the note is incorrect you don't go "fishing" for it- take note of whether it's too high or low, lift it up and make the adjustment, then reset it.
@@stringswithdrsulbaran I’m practicing with a tuner. I will try singing the note before playing it. And I will make note of the incorrect note rather than fish for it. Thanks.
