HUNTING DRAGON STONE PART 2 - INTO THE MINE #dragonstone #mining
So, we finally arrive at the Dragon Stone mine site! In part 2 of this series, on our hunt for the unique and distinct Dragon Stone, we’ve travelled 2000kms from Aussie Rock Hounds HQ, picked up the monster 6x6 military truck, but we’re only at base camp and still have to trek an hour to get into the main pit at the mine site.
Join me, Mick, and Steve as we show you treacherous last mile that reveals the beauty of this gemstone, and how we haul tons of this Dragon Stone between the site and base camp, trying to impact as little of the surrounding area as possible.
We’re still deep in the Western Australian desert, and while we put our backhoe, 6x6, and the Mack to the test, we still get to revel in the sheer vastness and beauty of the deep Pilbara.

@@KarenMcleay very satisfying getting back on the road again and that song is timeless 😉

Spot on safety advice for anyone venturing off the beaten track. Thanks.
@@groundhoggolddetecting6890 even in todays new world the unpredictability of Mother Nature has a way of turning things from good to bad in an instant… trying to share some tips and tricks along the way 👍…
Thanks for sharing your journey. WA is such a special place, the shear size and beauty always leaves me amazed and inspired to see more on more, being a prospector and rock hound I Really enjoyed seeing the expedition and how you mine the stunning dragon stone , Love old smoke what a beast. The drone shots are epic showcasing the Pilbara and all her beauty. Im not having a go but want to share a little bit of advice I am a commercial drone operations business owner, please be careful of what you show in your vids as not following CASA regulations and showing it on line can be costly and cause you unwanted attention. Simple things like how high you fly max 120m and being able to maintain visual line of sight where you can actually see the drone and not just a tiny dot on the horizon. With a small drone that may only be a couple hundred meters. Happy to help if you need it on your next expedition. Can't wait to see more.
Thanks so much Mike, really appreciate the support and encouragement! Agree with you that WA is super special and holds a special place for us. Old Smokey is very cool, worth every effort to get her out to the Pilbara!! It's been a game changer out here. Totally agree about the drone footage and always flying safely. Thanks for the advice on the drone. Out here we do use a hard limiter on the ceiling to avoid exceeding any altitude limits and because we're shooting in 4K it gives us lots of options to crop in without losing sight of the drone. The great thing about the Pilbara is that we can position up on the peaks and not get any terrain blocking the view of the drone. It's great to have the perspectives though of another pro-drone operator and would be happy to reach out if we ever need support out here!
Thanks for the reply, Great to see responsible and creative pilots out there sharing our amazing state. You guys sharing what it takes to mine and recover dragon stone really shows the amount of planning effort, mobilisation it takes to bring this to the world, do you guys have a retail outlet. Would love to get a couple of pieces, the wife and her mum have the rock and gem disease, they both spent large part of thier lives in the Pilbara so som thing to add to there collections from home would be awsome. Thought I knew most of the rock and gems of our state but you have opened my mind up to how much we really don't know about our state.
Hi Mike, Yes we have a store in Perth your welcome to visit 10am-4pm, 7 days. We have some nice pieces of Dragon Stone available and many other Australian stones we deal with. We're located at 42 Dale Place, Orange Grove.. Also a heads up, Our crew returns from Denver in a few weeks and I'm hinting they may just have some extra nice pieces that were earmarked from our USA stock that were destined for Perth.
A superbly produced show! It appears to be recorded by a professional TV crew. Great editing. Very watchable, crying out to be a TV series.
Thanks Mate! Really appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed it 👍.. stay tuned and spread the word, we have some really special moments to share 😉.
Can you not leave the backhoe and rock truck at a nearby station 🤔
We can, but as we use them for other Mining Tenements ad not having a huge budget we utilise the same equipment from mine to mine.. It also helps with preventative maintenance if we travel around with the machinery 👍🛠😜
Do you have rose quartz
Yes, currently we have a good stock in our Perth Store.

Who the hell discovered the ‘vein’ of dragon stone out in the middle of the Pilbara in the first place?
Prospectors walk from range to range looking for all sorts of signs and signals.... Even though we're in a developed world and we have some an idea of Geology, mother nature has a way of surprising us! 😃👍...
If you have ample water (Yeh, it's a big ask where you are ATM :p) putting on extra layers of absorbative wet clothing is like wearing a personal airconditioner. It's an old bushy trick I learned from my late uncle way back when. He was a Forestry Commisioner in Victoria, and often had to go out in sweltering heat and fight fires. I don't do it often, (Too old and soft now) but it works wonders. :)
I use that trick inside the old Mack, Gets so hot so tipping a bit of water down the front of my shirt works wonders for 5 minutes.... haha definitely works only thing is on a 50 degree celcius day and 20 percent humidity the water has gone before it even leaves the spout 😜
Is your mine the only deposit in Australia, or even the world?
Sure is! There's other stones that have similar sounding names but this is the only source of Austrailan Dragon Stone.
Did you have to get permits to travel onto traditional land
Yes most definitely. We not only have authority from the West Australian Department of Mines but we negotiate and work closely with the traditional owners. Agreements are made well before we enter and cause any ground disturbance on all of our deposits.
Such an amazing part of Australia. The contrasts between the dirt and blue sky is stunning. The dragon stone does polish up nicely
How good is the Dragonstone, especially against the colours of the Outback. We are huge fans too! Glad you enjoyed it
That 6x6 is insane! Perfect rig for the Aussie Outback
The beast is the best! Our trust companion for these adventures in the Outback.

Doing our best!

Awesome video thanks. Is dragon stone the same mineral as dragons blood Jasper?
It is from the same mine, these days we don't get as much of the red sprays as the surface material produced but we are getting a nicer blue hue coming into play which we now define as "Dragon Stone".
Looking forward to seeing the end product 👍
Stay tuned!!
Thanks for showing how u get the rocks and what u go through
