We have a kiteboat!

      We do have a “foil”, lifting downward 🙃 It has been designed to anchor us in the water, as opposed to what is currently done in competitive sailing ➡️ at the very high speeds we are targeting, we don't want to fly but to stay really flat on water, kind of like a formula 1. If we go into more detail, the aim is to lift the boat so that it skims the surface just above the waves, we call this "planing" ➡️ of course, the smaller the waves are, the better our boat will perform!

  • @robertcain3426

    Nice looking boat. But the drag on that foil must be massive. Studying speed records of land and ice boats, foils create 40% more drag by comparison. Subsequently only achieving 60% of the speed of land and ice boats. Yes, foils are good for efficiency, but not top speed. Foils also have excellent righting moment. Also, for further confirmation on the performance of foils, foiling sailboard speed records are only able to achieve 60% of the speed if non foiling speed sailboards. And which correlates to the same percentage as Paul Larsen's Vestas Sail Rocket compared with land and ice boats speed records. The conclusion, for me is that foils are the wrong direction for speed sailing. Foils are about efficiency and not top speed. And though the SP 80 is getting more power from a kite, it will not be able to utilise that power because the weakness is with the foil. The proof of that is putting 5000 hp motor on the SP80 will not make it go any faster than the foil is capable if going. If it did, racing power boats would have foils. Cheers

    • @angellestat2730
      @angellestat2730 Před 4 měsíci

      I guess the best point for foils is to counter drift from the horizontal force from the kite. But this is why I think Syroco approuch is much better, because it counters the sail horizontal force in exactly the opposite direction and most of the boat would stay afloat using the kite push instead of the foil. The foil on the syroco is just to counter the sail and to keep it in the water. Also more aerodynamic, but it has more challenges that approach. Vestas Sail Rocket also counters the sail force in the same axis that it needs to. Besides, all the fastest sail boats use foils. But I guess there is something wrong with Sp80 design, looks like it drag a lot of water.

    • @robertcain3426
      @robertcain3426 Před 4 měsíci

      @@angellestat2730 Here is my reasoning regarding HR foils, which are always going to be the inhibiting factor in the attainment of high speed. In contradiction to popular perceptions about HAR foils, they are made for efficiency, not speed. Speed is relative, and the only reason they are assumed to be fast is becaused they are being compared to conventional sailing craft. LAR foils are faster, though less efficient. Meaning, they have a much higher potential speed, but less efficiency - less power. But when they are geared with an appropriate power to weight ratio, their speed potential is much higher. Just look at airfoils. And given the the density of water is 700 times greater than air, these principles are greatly magnified in hydrofoils. Simply put, the slowest moving aircraft have HAR foils. While the fastest have LAR foils or have severely reduced the size of the HAR foils to mitigate their negative effects. The solution is to use LAR foils.

    • @angellestat2730
      @angellestat2730 Před 4 měsíci

      @@robertcain3426 Sorry. But I can not find nothing on Har vs Lar foils. There is one single site with cons and pros, but without a single graphic, it looks that you are using definitions that are no popular at all on English. About the speed limit of foils.. It would be possible to use the same technology of torpedos, that creates an air bubble around to reduce the drag? Once they accomplish some good speeds, I think the next step should be to change the kite design, to something more aerodynamics like the kites of Enerkite. Maybe using a tether with some kind of spring to regulate tether tension and maybe the kite could also fly with some algorithm.
