@@Banned_and_Redacted Rome Total War 2, Tutenburg forest battle. This is the famous line that August is said to have said when the news reached to him in Rome that the Rhine legions had fallen/massacred. The Rhine legions were atleast 3 legions there and a legion is about 5,000 men at peak condition, estimation varies from as low 12,000 to as high as 20,000 men had died during the battle.
@Zach Grove there is a youtube channel called invicta they specialize in giving great historical content as well as great visuals. They are currently during a mini series about the Tutenburg massacre and the aftermath that followed with romes revenge.
When a roman emperor cares so much about his legionaries and there families it literally breaks him to hear hes lost legions of them due to the mistakes of an incompetent commander. Man Augustus was a great guy.
@@TheGreenTaco999 I think he actually cared about the empire, morals back then were different, not so much centered arround the individual as an end in itself like modernity and capitalism state, but holding the community at the highest.
@Lucas Fernandes absolutely not, it was two or three legions, rome was famous for recovering from catastrophic defeats just take a look at the second punic war lol, two or three legions for the roman population and military tradition was nothing, and in fact, subsequent campaigns into germania genocided the hell out of the zone until tiberius gave the order to stop. He didnt care about the legionaries I think, he cared about romes honor and the romans as a whole, that cannot be neglected I think.
He cared about the fact that Rome had lost 3 entire legions of 20,000 in a single day. Considering that the empire had 28 legions pre-Teutoberg, the loss of almost 10% of their military put a massive strain on defense, especially in the wake of the Illyrian revolt, and was a humiliation. I doubt Augustus particularly cared about the individuals who were lost, given that he spent his early years embroiled in civil war.
In Germany they don't call it the "Battle of Teutoburg Forest" It is known as "Varusschlacht" meaning "Varus Battle"
