Ah. IT work. I've been laid off 6 times, two by companies that don't even exist anymore. I can't even remember all the company names. This goes all the way back to 2001 when 9/11 quickly got people to forget the tech bubble burst that spring that made about 400,000 IT jobs disappear virtually overnight. The industry rebounded somewhat until 2008 when it went to hell again during the global financial crisis. In 1996, I was working at a full time with benefits and decent pay gig (for a company that doesn't exist anymore). My last year in IT, I have two 8 week contracts, one which only made it 3 weeks, no benefits, no severance. and the rest of the year spent looking for work. The industry evolved, like so many others, to be run not based on profits, but by share price. The quickest way to boost stock value is to reduce head count. IT companies spend more than 80% of their money on wages, so it's a no brainer. This has also served to add fuel to the health care crisis since so many jobs no provide no health benefits. Pension are long gone, replaced by paltry 401ks that shift the burden for saving back on the employee. My parents had 3 jobs between them their whole working lives. I've had 3 in one year.

They wanted me to sign a confidentiality agreement when i got canned in order to receive 1 year of severance pay. I was not to solicit customers or recruit current employees. I was highly skilled labor. I threw the paper at them and told them FY. Monday morning i was on the plane and hired the same day. It took 6 weeks but i recruited 5 people from my old job. There very best. Needless to say they are no longer in business. Revenge is sweet. BE careful who you decide to fire. It may cost you your own job. I enjoyed every minute of what i did. The people i recruited saw what they did to me and realized it could happen to them. It all worked out very well for all of us. Have fun.

Its crzy you say in the beginning tjat this video is meant for those that are not on n college nor in a coding bootcamp, and just want to learn to code. Then half way through the video you hit them with all the full stack options. Thats too much bro.

Google is the same as AWS! In the DMV area (Reston, VA), I have referrals for both but your application won't be looked at regardless of your referral. Also just because you apply 98% of the times you wont hear back from a real person. The only form of communication is automated emails that take you nowhere!

10 million people all took coding bootcamp, all practicing leetcode, all passing tech interviews....if you don't use experience to gate keep, how else are you suppose to weed people out. Literally people oversaturated the SWE market so much, we have more Software engineers looking for jobs than any other engineering or science professions. Everyone heard you get like 300k at google while working 6hrs a day so everyone started learning to code. After 20 years of every single college student wanting to work for google, this is the result.....

You only have to do every leetcode puzzle that exists. Don't worry about actually writing software. The only thing that patters are puzzles that will never, ever be used on a job.

Honestly, this story seems wierd and very untrue, generally speaking. Strage that one would choose to tell it this way. Anyhow, stay safe, wish you all the best.

So despite seeing tons of job opportunities on LinkedIn.. I get 0 responses from any "Apply now" option. So I am starting to think.. that route is crap. Everyone uses it so it is inundated with applications and likely AI filtered. Years ago I used Dice, Monster and a few recruiters that reached out to me. Now.. I can't seem to find any good way to get in front of opportunities. I fail miserably at the stupid broken white board part of interviews.. why someone with 20+ years who has had jobs for years at a time coding.. needs to show "i can code" by being put on the spot with a leetcode problem is beyond stupid. At my level, leetcode shit is seldom if ever a thing in just about every job I've been in. In fact, I only use DSA stuff for job interviews. That's how little it's used in day to day. There is a reason our IDEs, tooling, support forums, and now AI are utilized as tools.. especially with so many libraries in every language already written (usually quite well) to do all this anyway. "We need to know you know the core stuff". Really.. I knew that shit 20+ years ago. I still largely know it but I do so much more that I dont fully remember every aspect that I learned that long ago. I am usually doing more design, leading, etc than low level code monkey stuff.. so whats it prove that I can't ace the shit out of some leetcode stuff but I know system design, devops, cloud deployments, back end stuff, enough front end to get in trouble, etc. Very frustrating because someone with a couple years experience who aces the leetcode bits will get hired over me with vastly more experience in a lot of areas. All because of some code we all never do day to day anyway. That is why the hiring process for engineers, especially senior/lead/staff is so broken.

Those "survivor meetings" right after a layoff. They are saying how sorry they are to have to layoff employees, while you are sitting thinking about how to rewrite your resume and send it out. Its like two people who don't like each other but agreed to do lunch anyways.

Holy shit. They did an emotional whiplash on you and that's totally unfair. If this voluntary package were to ever happen to me I'd take severance and cut myself a lot of bs. Any company worth it's weight should address their staff directly if they want them to stay. instead they made it anon and pushed blame around.

When the pandemic hit i took a job at a media company that owns a chain of Adult//Video// Porn Viewing Stores. I improved the customer Booth Viewer Software... revamped their payroll.. customized the POS system and improved their internet shopping cart. THeir payroll system was made in Visual Foxpro and no other software engineers wanted to touch it. I dove in to the deep end and remade the whole thing in C#. No one wanted to take this "lousy job" that involved a lot of "antiquated software". Everyone just collected government money and sat at home. I moved my software engineering career forward.

Its RIDICULOUSto call any part of the last three years a recession. The US economy GREW more than any ecompmy in the world post COVID. Indeed, COVID was a recession, but it was the shortest in history.
