    In the late 60's, Gevrey Chambertin used to be my favourite wine (and it used to cost just over £1 in my local restaurant). I subsequently lived abroad for many years, where it was not available. When I returned to the UK, naturally I bought some, expecting great things, but alas, no. Either it had changed or I had. The last time I tried it was about 10 years ago and nobody drinking it with me liked it, so the rest of the bottle ended up being used to flavour some gravy. Later, I related this story to a wine buyer who worked for one of the major supermarkets. He nodded and then said "It's not you that's changed, it's the wine." He went on to explain that in the 60's it was common practice for producers in Burgundy to smuggle in a heavier wine such as a Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon from elsewhere to give the Pinot Noir some depth and body, but nowadays with modern stringent testing, they were no longer able to get away with that. So modern Gevrey Chambertin is thin and tasteless and best avoided. You can now get far superior Pinot Noir from many other countries and as a bonus, at a fraction of the cost.

    • @BurgundyWithTweedy
      @BurgundyWithTweedy Před 3 dny

      It sounds like you like big bold reds, not elegant / nuanced / more delicate wines, which is what I think Pinot Noir does best, and is the style of wine I prefer. Each to their own! A few decades ago there was more of a tendency towards heavily extracted wines in Burgundy, and yes I can imagine there probably was a time when other grapes crept in more. In many wine producing regions (particularly in Europe) a single varietal wine only actually needs to contain a minimum of 85% of the named fruit, but the rules for most Burgundy appellations are much stricter. I've tried Pinot Noir from many different regions of the world, and personally I vastly prefer the version of it from this area of Burgundy - Gevrey Chambertin and nearby villages. I do think Spätburgunder has something interesting to offer, but all the New World (e.g. Californian) Pinot Noirs I've tasted have been jammy and/or over-oaked to my tastes. If you like that style of wine then great! I would never say one wine is superior to another, it's just what I happen to prefer. As evidenced by this channel I don't like 100% of the wines from Gevrey Chambertin I try, but when it's at its best, it is for me the wine I'd rather be drinking than any other still red wine, without a doubt.

    • @Chris-hf2sl
      @Chris-hf2sl Před 3 dny

      @@BurgundyWithTweedy "Each to their own!" - Absolutely. Yes, I do like big bold reds, but not to the exclusion of other styles. I agree that Pinot Noir is best for elegant / more delicate wines, and if I were sitting under a tree in the summer, as you were in the video, then that's what I'd choose. Generally speaking, I think that the French have rested on their laurels for far too long and have lost their place as the world's leading wine producer. A few years ago, I went on a wine tasting trip to Burgundy. The thing that I remember most about that trip, is a visit to a famous vineyard (which I won't name), where the very snooty host said "This next wine is a Premier Cru and one of our special top wines". The only thing special was the price. Later, we visited a vineyard just outside the protected region, where a young couple were working hard to make it in the wine world. Their wine was superb. So basically, if you happen to own a bit of land in the right area, you can sell mediocre wine for high prices, but if your land is just down the road, you struggle to sell excellent wine at any price. And what about the expansion of the Champagne region? Suddenly, sparkling wine that was previously produced just outside the old Champagne area is now within the region and can therefore be labelled Champagne, whereupon the price suddenly sky rockets. The wine hasn't changed, only the label has changed. With a lot of French wine, the label is what you're paying for. That's not to say that they don't produce good wine; of course they do, but just because it comes from a famous vineyard, is no guide to quality. Incidentally, Eastern Europe now produces some excellent Pinot Noirs and as you say, Spätburgunder is also interesting, especially from the Ahr Valley. I agree with you though that it's good that we don't all like the same style.

I can't think of a Burgundy I've had with a synthetic closure that I've really enjoyed. I understand the desire from winemakers to reduce the rate of faulty bottles but it didn't seem to help here did it...? If they want to eliminate the chances of TCA (at least coming from the closure) then why not go with a Diam cork? They're still made of cork, but processed / treated in a way that it's practically impossible to cause any taint. They're also quite technical in that they make versions with different porosity which gives the winemaker another lever to adjust to determine how the wine ages.

    A well earned bottle of wine Tweedy I do enjoy all the videos that show up on my youtube feed ❤

    With Burgundy being an expert on disappointment, I was happy and relieved that the wine delivered. Cheers to many more bottles, and videos!

      Thanks Mikael - yes I was definitely bracing myself for potential disappointment here! I was pleasantly surprised though, it really was something quite special, and quite different from other wines I've had from Gevrey Chambertin.

      I'm guessing it's not going to be the sort of unspoilt rustic boozer I like (are there any of those at all left in the Cotswolds?) but I am still slightly intrigued.
