Here is some advice from a wrestling father. My son was a late starter (didn't get serious until high school...was a football player) and wrestling has been everything the last 2 years. His life has 100% rotated around wrestling for a while. Did Purler 28 day camp last year, wrestles at one of the best clubs in the state the last 6 months. He is on a phenomenal S and C program. He has gotten very good and his goal is to place at state this year. What I have learned (and I have pushed him hard) is to support and love him no matter what, regardless of where he places.

Mentally putting it all together is just called proper conditioning, usually kids are lacking anaerobic (wind sprints) and pull-up strength. When they can’t mentally put it together, When they can’t get the wins even though it seems like they have it all, it is a lack of anaerobic conditioning (wind sprints) and pull-ups.

Good Introduction to being a man here. Kids listen up, especially on how to act and present yourself. You will thank him later.

Our son starts the 28 day camp today. I didn't wrestle as a kid, so when our son fell in love with the sport we had a lot to learn about parenting a wrestler. The first few years the only wrestling our son did was for the few weeks during the season and the few tournaments that the school went to as a team. I mean, we were green, heck we didnt even know about club wrestling. At some point he got the bug and started practicing on his own and we seen how passionate he was about wrestling. Now he wrestles for 2 clubs and wrestles all around the country. 2 years ago (when he was in 7th grade) the head coach of the high school took notice and invited him to practice with the high-schoolers, and seeing how much potential he had has taken a huge interest in his wrestling. He has sent a few of his students to the 28 day camp and has seen what he calls "life changing progress" afterward. So when the coach suggested he go, we knew it was time. He will be a freshman next year, and we are so excited for him to have this opportunity. Financially, we fit into the "don't really have the money" catagory. But we take turns with other parents driving to club wrestling year round, we bought our garage and basement mats used online, used weight lifting equipment. We gave our son choices like "would you rather have a new Playstation and games, or go to Purler, because we can't afford both", and he chose camp. My point for posting this is to point out to any parents who are in the same boat as us, that it can be done. If you don't have a ton of money, but still want your kid to have some great opportunities, just figure it out and make it happen. If you go out a few times a month, give that up. If you spend money on designer clothes, shop at walmart. Give up that 3 thousand dollar John Deer rider and get a push mower. Wrestling is a lifestyle that the whole family has to embrace to make it happen, but it has brought us closer as a family bonding around wrestling. "God, Family, Wrestling" is what we live by. Take care and stay safe, many blessings to all.

I agree. As a kid I sold my 4 wheeler and bought a home mat. I was 12. and you don't need to attend every major event and can stay home and train on the home mat or at the school. Hit the few big events, etc. I'll be in the 28 day kids room tomorrow again and looking forward to working with your son and the others!

Question coach what do you recommend to do when let’s say for example my son is practicing with on the one best kids on the team and when the coach sees them working together, he switches them and he’ll put my son with someone like a first year way way smaller, and he does every time my son is wrestling with one of the “good kids”, I feel like that’s not right as a coach you should want all your kids to get better not just your favorites, I feel like it stops my kid from seeking out better competition in the wrestling room.

Good stuff. My son is a youth wrestler at Askren Wrestling Academy and they speak a similar language. There's a number of wrestling moves that are not coached at all for this very reason. Hoping to get down to one of your summer camps in the upcoming years.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. (Robert Heinlein, ‘Time Enough For Love’, 1973)
