America the Beautiful - Cross Country Road Trip - West Virginia to California
A long time planning. I'm finally driving to the West Coast as part of a huge summer adventure and exploration. Camping along the way saves money and makes the adventure just a little more exciting. I'll be meeting up with Michael, then traveling by ferry boat to Catalina Island for an exciting bikepacking trip, followed by more exploration at Big Bear Lake. California. Follow along on my first cross-country trip.

This is my very first overnight bikepacking adventure. It was a long time coming and turned out just like I hoped. The weather spanned from a heat index of 103° to severe thunderstorms to steady all-night rain showers. Along the way, my son and I conquered the infamous Hernshaw Hill Climb that pushed the limits of fitness over 7 miles of moderate gradients, but also gives exhilarating and speed...

My first offroad adventure on my new Specialized Chisel. Winter weather persisted with chilling cold temperatures, freezing winds, snow, and even a glimpse of sunshine. This bike is amazing and I'm looking forward to more mud slinging, gravel crunching, hill grinding adventures.

A took advantage of a break in the rain to get out for some adventure. From my starting point, I cruised to Snowhill Drive. From there I traveled through the historic East End of Charleston and followed the Elk River to Coonskin Park. I crossed the river and traveled via US 119 back to Charleston, then across the Patrick Street Bridge to home.

That building on Capitol Street across from the library used to be a McDonald's. I tried to get a job there as a night janitor back in the early 70s but was told I had to cut my hair, so no. LOL I then went to work at the S.Spencer Moore photo department (118 Capitol St). I used to live on Capitol Hill before I moved to Kansas and had a storage unit at the Nelson Transfer building you rode by, which at the time was run by a crazy but hilarious old man. Nice to see the old town again!
It was a Mc Donald's, and a strange one at that it had an overflow dining room in the windowless basement.

Awesome! We’re thinking about doing the same, first come first serve sites near Sherwood lake and more of them along Anthony creek in Blue Bend, little camping, lots of fishing!
