This series of video tutorials on forest mensuration and forest inventory was produced as additional teaching material in context of the lecture "Monitoring of Forest Resources" at the Chair of Forest Inventory and Remote Sensing at the University of Göttingen. The videos summarize some basics of forest mensuration and plot assessment techniques and are supplementary material to our lectures that also cover the more in depth statistical part of estimation based on different observation- and sampling designs. For more information on teaching content, see AWF-Wiki.

Deriving tree density from angle count sample
zhlédnutí 622Před 8 měsíci
With angle count plots (Bitterlich plots) we get an immediate estimate of the stand basal area (m²/ha) by just counting the IN trees and multiplying with the counting factor used. The inclusion probabilities with this design are proportional to the basal area of the individual trees, what makes the design very efficient for basal area estimation. However, if we like to derive an estimate of tre...
Testing a self-3D printed Dendrometer for stand basal area estimation
zhlédnutí 579Před 8 měsíci
For the establishment of Bitterlich plots we need an angle gauge. A simple alternative to the Mirror Relascope is a Dendrometer or any other simple gauge that defines the fixed opening angles for different basal area factors. Here I test a self 3D printed Dendrometer. Works fine! At the end it is mainly about the border trees that need to be checked, for the many other trees that are clearly IN...
UAV applications in forest monitoring
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 9 měsíci
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), sometimes called drones, become more and more relevant for forest monitoring. Together with fast developments of photogrammetry software and the increasing availability of specific sensors, UAVs become a flexible alternative for airborne remote sensing on smaller areas. Together with my colleagues Dr. Hans Fuchs, Dr. Nils Nölke and Nils Griese, we give an overvi...
Forest dieback, bark beetle and fire risk: forest change in the Harz mountains

A bit shock when i was reading the list of the supervisors, Dr. Fabian Brambach. We did work in the same project. Great to know your research in Indonesia. Salam hangat from Indonesia!
Yes! Without the hard work of Fabian and his team several years ago, none of this would be possible ☺ I am very thankful for him and for all of the researchers who came before me!
This is my first time see the super huge caliper😭
I'm used to using a caliper for measuring tree diameter, so I was surprised when I saw most people in videos using measuring sticks or tapes for circumference.
Hi sir
very nice presentation
So cool Mary! I was wondering where in the world you were!
Always somewhere 😄
love this so much! as a young biologist myself, this is so heartwarming and energy-boosting to watch!
That makes me so happy to hear! Keep doing your great work 🤠🌺
great guys! are you interested in collaborating with us and to bring your knowledge and skills to Lincoln, UK?
Wow, Lincoln looks wonderful... Unfortunately we have enough work with our own students right now, but we keep this in mind...
Thx very good.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. It's very interesting and inspiring!
Thank you! All the best for your adventures ⛰🥾
Such a great scenery Working in Lore Lindu National Park. Amazing video upload, I appreciate you for sharing! Enjoy your day, my friend. Thanks for sharing… 👍
Thank you for watching and sharing this nice comment!

Thanks for sharing this story with us (hannah big family)
Accommodation for the field team is among the many things one needs to organise if we like to foster collaboration of international scientists with the Lore Lindu National Park...
Thank you for watching 💚
Mary, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Your trip amazed me, and we can learn a lot from your films. God always bless you.
Happy you enjoyed it 😊 thank you so much!
Amazing journey 🧡💛
Good job Mary, you must really admire Indonesia's forests
I do 😍
Great work Mary. Big appreciate
Thank you, Pak Dodik!
This is also evidence of the very fruitful and long-lasting collaboration between IPB and GAUG
Sir, can you please suggest me which one is the best laser range finder?
I liked your phd thesis work in Indonesia. Tropical forests are unique and diverse in nature. We can observe variation in species composition in different plots. May I know which quadrate method did you used for the inventory of the species composition, and what was its size?
Hi! Thanks for the nice questions ☺️ we used 40m x 60m plots, divided into 10m x 10m quadrants. Over the entire plot, we measured diameters and tree heights for all stems >10cm. Then, within each quadrant, we measured stems down to 2cm in a 5m x 5m subplot. Hope that answers your questions 🤠
What a great documentary! I am thrilled by the beautiful pictures and Mary's interesting stories about them. Thank you to everyone who made it possible for us to watch this video <3
Really nice to hear this ☺️ thank you!
