The walker I use is the same as this one being demonstrated here. Sometimes I need to navigate some tight turns. To help in this I use the hand breaks. If Im turning right, I apply the right hand brake lever to lock the right hand wheels, the same using the left hand brake to make a tight left turn. The brake lock feature demonstrated also is invaluable. I don't often use the seat to sit down, but if I did the feature on this walker would do the business. This model while not collapsing completely does fold sufficiantly to fit easily into the trunk of a small Asian or European automobile.

In 2023, in July and August, I had taken two major falls that needed hospitalization followed by a two-to-three-week stay in a rehab center. While undergoing physical therapy, I was told by the therapist to make sure I locked the wheels of my rollator before I sat down in it, and before standing up. It sounds simple, but it took me a while before doing so came naturally. I always had the wheels locked and my hands firm on the handles while turning around to face the rollator. I also followed the warning printed on its frame to never sit on the seat when it was moving. I have recently been able to walk freely without using it, but in the six years I was using it, I never had an accident. It helps to be careful, and treat the device with respect. BTW, I still don't like it when my rollator is called a walker!

To avoid the thing rolling away, one could use slightly resistive wheels (2 rear : if you flip, the front wheel will be airborne and stop assisting), capturing the energy into a battery. I reckon the charge to be low but once you have the resistive wheel working, which was the purpose, if you won't be using the energy you will have only the alternative to burn that energy through a resistor, so might as well be a battery. That battery can now feed a circuit that lets you adjust, from lever on the handle, the resistivity in the wheel or other parameter of the system you now have... I reckon I have never used those, I might be completely off... My interests comes from a need for such device. Thanks

I have gone thru months of physical and occupational therapy. I have 2 similar walkers to the 1 you are using. Each of them has 1 broken brake. While I was in rehab, the therapists laughed at me in the way I used my walkers. 1st off, my legs would barely support me, I had use my arms. The first few times, they stood behind me, but I tend to pull the walker or wheelchair towards me and lift myself up so that I'm pretty much connected. They approved me lol.

Good information about using a Rollator. I've used one since 2019 when I had a hip replacement. Butting the Rollator up against a wall is one way to keep you from a face-plant. Knowing the limits of what you can expect from walking with a rollator tends to be a real PITA> And that will depend on the manufacturer of the Rollator. I have tried two different providers over the past 4 years. I chose to go with a non-US provider because I felt that the design and construction was better than what was touted by a Yankee provider. Having said that YMMMV. Be realistic about what you want and expect.

At 67, I have severe osteoarthritis in my spine, hips, and knees. Because of my kidneys I can no longer take any NSAID pain relievers-not even topical. So it's just Tylenol and I have been mostly hobbling with a cane, which is getting harder to do. I have a standard 2-wheel folding walker, but it's not all that useful outdoors and my yard is hilly in spots. So today I just got a good, heavy-duty rollator. First thing I watched was the assembly video for my new best friend, second thing was this one which offered excellent advice. I definitely want to gain back that muscle tone to the lower body. This is going to help me stay safe while start getting out and about again.

The darn things are just too low. They really need redesigning with modern technolgy to provide braking. Eg instant break if it senses that the user's leg is too far back from the walker. My mum in law has terrible arthritis in her hands yet so many walkers have handbrakes. An engineer needs to team with a physio and spend time with frail, elderly people to study the problem

I'd love to hear what others have to say on this topic and what they've done. But for many of my clients have called the airline and told them they need wheelchair assistance in and out of the plane. They often check their walker in with their bag. The added bonus is the person is often one of the first ones on and off the plane. If the flight is shorter, this works if someone doesn't have to get up for the bathroom and try to navigate those narrow isle ways with people's legs, feet, and belongings hiding below which are all risks for tripping if one tries to use the seats as a device to walk. In this situation I also know that many actually wear adult briefs just for that occasion if they need to. It's not pleasant but that was their solution to not have to get up and risk tripping. Another solution that people may do is check in their walker, and before checking it in, they take out their Hurry-cane (or two) which folds up. They then use that for the brief time on the plane if they have to get up and they use the seat and the cane. A folding cane can be a lot easier to manage than trying to get huge rollator/upright walker on the plane and put away.
