In this 1st of 2 videos on our 'Birding Wisdom' journey, we meet Francis Willughby and John Ray, two of the most influential naturalists from the 17th century. These much revered men jointly began a journey that changed how we record birds forever. We visit their homes, learn about their lives and pay our respects by travelling to where they have been laid to rest.

    • @S2SBirda
      @S2SBirda Před 5 měsíci

      Hi Peter, I use BirdGuides but I guess whatever system suites your budget. I know your fairly new to birding and it’s not a bad idea to have one of these alerts but there is much to explore and get to grips with for you than chasing rarity. If used wisely these are great resources for what’s about but my advice would be to go explore and discover. There are so many discoveries out there for you, spring birds and passage birds soon to arrive, heathland, farmland, sea and estuary plus the wonderful seabird colonies to visit. Seeing rare birds is wonderful and you can do both but remember to put time in and continue to familiarise yourself with what’s common and local and most of all enjoy your journey. Hope that helps.

Unlike the Eurasian Griffon Vulture that nests on cliffs, this species nests primarily in trees and I was fortunate enough to see one. It really is a formidable and moody looking creature. I’ve been to Gambia a few times and visited some of the places you show in the video. Going again in March 2024, will be doing North Bank sites for the first time. Your video is the best I have seen on You Tube and made me look forward to my trip. I must say, after my last visit, last November, I didn’t see nearly as many species as you managed. Our guide Ansu Jawara, (Professor) was saying that the birding is harder now than it was back when you visited on these videos. Thanks for a great video. Oh, great music taste too, All Mod Cons, my favourite Jam album😊

      Thanks so much for your comments! This is what my channel is all about. Sharing trip reports and stories in hope that it might help someone. I hope you have a fantastic time back in the Gambia. I am sure you’ll see a few more species in that area. I see your a Clash fan. They were just an incredible band, I went to the book launch of Punk Rock Warlord in Shepherds Bush and met Ray Gange of Rude Boy! Brilliant night. Thanks again for your kind words. 👍

Hopefully we will get a few more ticks yo add to our Gambia list. You've git loads on your video that I haven't managed to see yet. Keep up the good work, I'll sub your channel, can't wait to get back to Gambia now.

    Fabulous content, narrative and descriptions I hope you can keep it up. I have subscribed and will of course continue to watch. I did manage the Brown Booby ( now much easier to see) not sure about the use of the word shorebirds in the Uk rather than Waders! Thank you so much.

      Thanks so much for your kind words and response. Well done on the Brown Booby, such a great bird. And as for shorebirds vs waders, I spent about 13 years on the west coast of Canada so old habits die hard. Haha. Thanks again for your input, I really appreciate it. Looks like we are in for a busy autumn. 👍

      @@S2SBirda I have now watched about 20 more of your videos which I have to say are superb, I’ve been birding for 40 years and although I enjoy every minute I have about 20 % of your knowledge. The way you deliver this knowledge is a real credit to you, none condescending and without any ego, you remind me of a great friend of mine Ron Marshal and Tim Melling, Tim imparts his knowledge just like you. Thank you.

      @@Yorkshirewild I am absolutely blown away at your kind words and taking the time to write and comment. Thank you so much. It's great to get some feed back as I haven't been doing CZcams that long. My only goal is to share my interest in hope that someone will find it either interesting or helpful. 👍
