How to Clean Hard Wax off Your Tools
In this video I will show you how to easily clean hard wax off of your tools. Sculpting Wax is only soft when is very warm or almost melted. So it is very hard to clean it when it cools down.

It helped me when someone explained what is sacrificial and what is reusable. Ie that each wax iteration generates one bronze unit so the mold makes the multiples and the master can be reusable clay that makes a single permanent mold that sits on your shelf forever. This makes sense of your wire armature cos In this method the armature can be melted out. If the wax original is a one off its armature has to be burnable. According to my local founderer who uses shell vestment. So Im using garden waste wood to save on wax. I guess that wouldnt work with traditional lost wax where it has to melt n pour out ? Im also saving on silicon and saving on space storing moulds. #Artpovertyworkarounds

Does the microcrystalline recover its hardness if you do overheat? I know with encaustic (beeswax Damar resin blend) it craps out over 240 and wont reharden. But maybe its the organic rosin. Its just my old batch of sculpting wax is very soft or takes a long time to harden up enough to be plastic. Also on cleanup, i use a palette knife to scrape the tool then a heat gun or hairdryer or butane torch to melt the residue and only then wipe with paper towel. Scrapers are bliss. I use multiple scrapers for everything even house paint and cat vomit because they scrape each other - tools that clean themselves!

  • @Mr.Boglin

Oh man. i HATE that Victory Brown Wax. but if you use Wax the RIGHT WAY, its not "Tough" to work with. Wax is meant to be used for "Finishing" aka sculpt whatever you want, make a waste mold.. then inject/pour the hard wax into the armature. then you can use a wax pen to add small details, carve it, polish it. ect. sculpting with Victory Brown wax is a VERY Bad idea unless you're making something HUGE, and even then i don't like it, because it's such a crappy, dark color its INCREDIBLY Hard to see. if you want to work with just one "Clay or Wax" Castilene is much. MUCH. *MUCH* Better. even more so than Monster Clay, because it's a lot harder and easier to detail. Monster Clay is however fantastic for bigger sculpts like Masks, Statues and the like, AND its fantastic for making your Basic sculpt before making a waste mold for the "Hard" wax. btw the best "Hard" waxes are Scott Hensey's Wax, and Azbro Wax. i absolurely love both of those. if all else fails, use Zbrush, Blender or whatever, and just 3D Print your Sculpt.

Why would someone use sculpture was on an armature? I recognize it could be for practice or if they wanted to make a plaster mold cast. But if someone to have it made into a bronze. The wax could be melted but the metal armature would be interfering with the lost wax process, wouldn't it? Thanks for making this video. Have a Great Day!

I think while you clearly are very good at your skill..i think your tone expresses an example of fear...i did hollow casting at uni as elective for first time and was very easly...done..while not perfect, it was not has hard as you echo.. Yes! your sculpting skills are awsome..but it does not mean all have to be as good..with sculpting... I think Your statemtment to say very few people can do all stages is wrong.. I understand your points...but it is not that complex at all...and there are thousands of people doing casting at home...today I think to much fear and not enought eduction...showing people the process would be better..instead of self promotion of your skill lone... The easiest way I have seen to work with the hard wax is to break off chunks and on just high enough temperature using a slow cooker/crock pot to melt it completely, it might take a while if you don't have smaller chunks to begin with. Then you will need a smooth shinier cement floor like in a garage, nothing polished shiny or anything finished, and definitely not cement that hasn't been made an almost shiny smooth surface like how the cement of a sidewalk is very rough and textured like rough sandpaper. On the smooth cement pour a lot more cold water on the floor than you would think you have in melted wax or you could regret it more than you would believe. As soon as you have poured the water on the floor pour the melted wax from close to the floor onto the SOAKING WET(if in doubt keep a hose or water source running while you do this you want water to keep the wax from touching the cement at all before it cools and hardens!) The water cools the wax almost instantly if you haven't had the temperature on high in the slow cooker and you are close enough to the floor for the wax not to splash when poured. You'll want to pour it out on the water by moving arround and not in the same place the whole time. This will give you a thin sheet of wax that is easily re-melted or even warmed by hand to work with. It will be easy to remove off of the floor as long as you had enough water to keep the wax off of the actual cement surface. If you pour wax on the cement and you don't have enough water, you will have wax permanently stuck on your cement floor you will never be able to get rid of. If you poured the wax from too far from the floor it will splash and splatter everywhere possible and it will never come off of some surfaces completely. This is a technique for individuals who are capable of doing it intelligently and safely and at their own risk. It is not for those who require adult supervision regardless of their ages.
