It has been doing amazing. Just like new. We never have had any problems with it. And no. We live in the north. With an average of 93 inches of snow per year. We bring it inside and store it throughout the winter months.

@@majesticgardener5862 ok, that was why I was asking. I was hoping to not have to dismantle. Do you have a pump at the bottom of the pond? Or in a skimmer?

@PMPerformance You might be able to leave it outside. We just never have. We figured it would last longer if we didn’t. Yes. We have a pump that circulates water through the waterfall to keep the water moving for increased oxygenation. We also use a deicer. We do not have a skimmer.

@@PMPerformance yes. The pump is near the bottom of the pond. It pumps it up to the filter and out to the waterfall.

I've got the pump and I've got the same elbow and pump, did you find you had to screw it tight to be secure. Im worried that it will fall off?

@@fcmoonmanyou need to tighten it enough so that it doesn’t leak. But you don’t want to over tighten it and crack the plastic.

Hello. I am unsure of the variety. But it is not a dwarf. As far as how long it took to get this size, I would have to guess about 3 years. It grew rapidly.

Smoke bush blooms on old wood. So you would need to prune it immediately after it flowered if you want to keep the blooms for the following year. You can always limb the smoke bush up if you like the look of the base but leave the top in its “natural” form as well.

Good bacteria exists throughout the ponds interior as well. Our ponds have never looked better.

This is just another option for pruning. This style showcases the structure of the tree and allows for under planting. If you want the flowers, simply prune immediately when it’s done flowering.

No. It’s not invasive. The clump will expand slowly over time. It wont travel to other sections of your yard. It just needs to be divided every 2-3 years to look it’s best.

Yes. I deadhead them so they do not put their energy into growing seeds. Deadheading diverts energy to the bulbs so the plant continues to bloom well the following year. They will not rebloom when deadheaded sadly.

Do you have “Lucifer”? I have another variety as well and that is only about a foot tall.

@@puggcash4860 it will fill out more every year as it matures. After 2-3 years, divide it so it won’t get floppy. It’s a beautiful plant. Other than division, needs little maintenance

Check for a kink in the discharge hose. If not, see if you have debris stuck in the hose or in the drain outlet. You may have to remove the sponge filters and do a deep clean of the filters and filter box. There is likely to be debris in the system causing it to slowly drain. Hope this helps.

It’s approx 1,500 gallons. We still love this filter. It continues to work great for us. We added the 5,000 filter to our small pond last year and that’s doing a great job too. We have 4 large koi, at least 15 goldfish -all different varieties, multiple turtles and frogs. We have a big wildlife load and we clean it out approximately every 4-6 weeks during the summer months. This is the only filter we have had over the years that has kept our water clear. We can see all the way to the bottom. We don’t have to add chemicals or UV lights either.

Sorry about the audio. We had that pond for several years and tried multiple types of filtration systems and additives but the pond always looked that dirty. We would deep clean it and within days it looked dirty again. We decided to try the Oase filter which we installed after doing another clean out. And it has remained that clean ever since. We can see the fish and all the way down to the bottom of the pond. That filter is amazing. I can’t say enough good things about it. We hardly ever have to clean the filter. We added the 5,000 to our smaller pond last year with the same results.

It’s a great filter. We have not had any problems with it since we put it in. Last year we added the 5,000 to our small pond and we couldn’t be happier with the results. And I agree, Melafix is fantastic.

Thank you. We have a fenced in back yard. The turtles can roam throughout the entire yard and go between the ponds. But most of the time they prefer to be in the ponds or sunning themselves on the logs. I find they tend to roam during mating season. We feed the turtles pellets and dried shrimp when they are in the water. When they see us, they swim to the side, waiting to be fed. The fish are the same way. If you leave food on the logs or perimeter of your pond, you might attract predators such as raccoons depending on where you live. It can be a challenge keeping turtles in your yard if it’s not fenced in. Also, when constructing your pond, make sure you have a gentle slope to allow easy access for the turtles to get in and out. The only draw back is that this also allows easy access to herons. Congratulations on the new pond!

We have well water which is not chemically treated. It won’t harm bacteria colonies. If I had city water it would contain chlorine and would negatively impact the bacteria. I should have noted that in the video lol. I’ve had several comments regarding that.

The plants shown in this video near the filter are mainly Hostas. There are also a variety of Japanese Maple’s. The foliage from the JM that is frequently seen is from “Crimson queen”

Is your pond 8 meters x 3 meters? How deep is it?

@@majesticgardener5862 Its currently been dug at the moment. The hole is roughly 4.5mx4.5mx0.5m. Average dept is 0.5 meters. After filling in with rocks and pebbles and plants, i estimate 8m3 is what is going to be left.

Yes. If my calculations using the metric system are correct 😂 that is slightly more than 2,000 gallons. You might be able to do a smaller filter if you plan on having a light fish load. Just a word of advice, you might consider creating a deeper pond. Your future desires might change. If you decide down the road that you want koi for instance, they require 3’ where I live to overwinter in the snow and cold temps here. If you’re in a hotter zone, shallower water will cause the temp of your pond to rise. On a side note, we were visited by the dreaded blue heron this year. Not sure if you have them where you live, but He greatly reduced my fish population while I was away on vacation. If your pond is 3-4’ deep you’re less likely to have issues with them in your pond. The layout of your sides- entry points also effect your ponds susceptibility to predators. Just a thought.

@@majesticgardener5862 thank you for the advice. Slightly less than half of the pond is 3'. I will ask the digger to make it 4' for a certain limited area. I can not ask it right away because then i'm afraid of the stability of the slopes. The deeper the pond the steeper the wall slope, hence risk of increased land slide.🙄 The hole is mostly clay with no retaining structure. The climate where the pond situated is on the extremes. Summers like arizona and winters like alaska. Elevation is 1250m. I am really excited. Anyways i will order the oase biosmart set 14000 and see what happens. if not adequate i will augment it with something else. Thanks again.

Lol. That was my husband doing the pruning while I Narrated. Glad it helped. It doesn’t hurt it to prune this time of year. It might decrease the flowers/smoke that the bush produces next year. But I personally don’t mind. I don’t really like the way the flower looks.

@@majesticgardener5862 Thank you for your reply. I love this bush/tree. I bought it from a nursery 3 years ago. It had one trunk and was about 4 ft high, shaped like a tree. It's not 7 foot tall, and has several of these stems coming up from the top about 3 feet each. That's what I am going to cut back. We have well water so it does not contain any chemicals like chlorine. But you are correct. If you have city/ processed water then you would need to use water from the pond.

It would depend on your wildlife load. We have a large wildlife population: Koi, goldfish, turtles, frogs, crawfish in our approximately 1,000 gallon and our 1,500 gallon. In our small pond, we put in the 5,000 this spring. Our larger pond has the 10,000. Our experience has been that we clean the smaller filter more frequently. We clean that one out every 3-4 weeks. We can go longer between clean outs in our larger pond. So yes, we have less maintenance with our larger filter. But with that being said, we have far less maintenance and much better water clarity now than we ever had with a canister style system. We no longer need UV lights that we used in both ponds prior to using this filter. We also don’t have to use any chemicals to help with clarity issues.

We also have the 5,000 as well. We did a video on that this year. For the inlet from the pump to the filter we used rubber tubing and attached that with hose clamps. For the outlet we used 2” rubber elbow and attached that with a hose clamp too. At first we had to clean it once a week for 2-3 weeks. Once it was clean, we only had to clean it out about once a month. And we have a very high wildlife load. The filter is amazing and does an incredible job.

Wow. Thanks so much! That was so kind of you to make these videos and respond. For the output back into the pond did you use the gasket and adapter they provide? I’ve tried that with a 3” fernco fitting on top of it but their gasket and adapter don’t stay on the unit well and I’m afraid an animal or storm could cause it to come off. If you didn’t use their adapter, Is that where you put the 2” elbow? I’d be surprised if that fit. Without their adapter that opening is 2 3/4”. Thanks again!

You are so right! That was a typing error on my part. I meant to hit 3 and got 2. Sorry! I did use the 3” rubber elbow that came with clamps . I did not use anything else for the output. It is a sturdy connection.

No. Just the bottom branches. This helps show off the structure of the bush as well as allows for underplanting in a flower bed.

No. I’ve never had any water sprouts on my smoke bush. And it’s probably at least 7 years old and I’ve always trimmed it this way. Never had any problems with it. It is still dormant right now so there’s not much to see at the moment lol. But I’ll make another video this summer

@@majesticgardener5862 wow, well that goes against everything I ever learned and seen with pruning! I thought you could only do heading cuts with evergreens and if you did that with deciduous trees, they would water sprout like crazy. And I've even seen a few articles with people describing their heading cuts creating monsters out of their smoke bushes by the end of the season. That's why I was so surprised! I guess you learn something new everyday.

@@Bettebet79 when you perform tree topping or heading cuts, cutting all of the branches back to the same length or cutting a large tree back really hard leaving only stubs, it can cause water sprouts. I've always thought the best practice was to cut above a node, which is where the new healthy growth will be directed after the cut. When you Prune too much of a plant or in the wrong spots, it can send out tons of tiny, thin water sprouts from the tips of each branch or nub. They grow really fast to try and recover and all grow upwards in an unattractive manner... Thick branches ending abruptly with lots of tiny twigs coming from the ends. This is just what I've learned in my research! But I'm no expert. I'm still not sure if some trees water sprout and others don't though... Google trees with water sprouts and you can get a better idea of what they look like.

@@therootandvein She's not really performing heading cuts in the purest sense. Head cuts refer to material of more significant diameter and woodiness. She is essentially trimming twig sized leafy vegetation.

Thanks. That is one water lily, Wanvisa. It is a great water lily. The flower color varies greatly each time throughout the season. I have a video of that too if you want to know more about them. The Oase Biofilter is the best we have ever used. We are so impressed with it that we just added the 5,000 to our smaller pond last week. We have a large wild life load and this filter is able to keep up with it in a way the canister style never was. We only have to clean it out once every 3 weeks.

Map turtles like large bodies of water. Usually rivers. And they get rather large. I think they would likely eat your goldfish as they reached maturity. My turtles are painted turtles. They’re fairly small yet. I personally haven’t had any issues with them eating the fish. I’ve had red eared sliders successfully too. Do you already have a map turtle?

If you don’t already have a turtle, you should look into surrendered turtles at your local pet store. They are free. I’ve rescued several from mine and they’ve all done well.

Spring and fall are usually considered the best time to trim trees. However, we usually trim the smoke bush in the summer too because it looks overgrown by then.

At :35 in the upper right hand corner is just a potted water plant. The pump intake is at the base of the waterfall and is about 3 ft up and 3 ft out to the filter. The intake is 11/4” clear tubing. You can view this at 1:18 at the bottom left corner and 1:32 where it attaches to the filter. We have thought about the pre filter on the intake. We might try that this spring. @@johntexan4165 can you please clarify your question? Do you mean sludge on the bottom of the pond? If so we have not had any issues with sludge build up since we got this new filter.

@@shirogane6085 I appreciate the questions. It snows where I live so we leave the plumbing aspects in place outdoors and bring the filter inside over the winter. I made 2 videos about that filter this summer. One was about installation. The other about cleanout if you’re interested. I’ve used a lot of different filters in the past but the Oase is by far the best one I’ve ever had. The instructions for installing it were not very good. I watched some videos before installing it and found that helpful

Also, it can be used with new or existing set ups. We used it on an existing pond.

I don’t think it would work. This filter needs to be above ground to function properly. The pump pulls water up to the filtration unit and from there gravity pulls it down forming a waterfall. This unit isn’t designed for fountains. Sorry

I’m not sure how long the filters last. I wasn’t able to find that information and we have only had ours since this summer. But there are 3 different sponge filters (blue, green and red) Each is available from the manufacturer for $16.99. It’s a great filter. Best we have ever owned. We have a large wildlife load... 20 goldfish, 2 koi and several turtles. Our pond is about 1,500 gallons and it remains crystal clear with this filter.

Raccoon kill all my Kio and gold fish for many years this will be 2 time I build a pond out side for them .. what U doing to stop this madness I need your input

@@shahnawazvlog6266 They are very hard to outsmart. Our pond is an inground pond. We found what works best for us is to create shelter areas within the pond. For instance, We left large openings behind our waterfalls that they can go into when predators come. The openings are only large enough for fish. In the deep end we built natural rock caves for them to go into as well. This helps with the Herons too. I have seen others use large PVC pipe on the bottom of their ponds which would do the same thing. It just doesn’t look as nice

Geri Schaffer I would think you could start relatively early to establish the base structure that you want. I prefer mine to have multiple trunks.
