Photography and the Uncanny Valley: Exploring Thames Town - an English Village in Shanghai China
... in which I visit a Shanghai suburb modelled after a traditional English village and ask the question, what is quintessentially English? Does Thames Town capture any of that Anglo essence and as a UK born Australian visiting China, can I in turn capture any of that through photography? As I wandered through the uncanny valley of both familiar and unfamiliar architecture and photographed people going about their lives, it became pretty clear - this ain't England!

    You can tell its not England immediately, its not covered in litter. Does the 'church' actually function as a church or is it just a civic building ? In terms of architecture I don't think its far off some of the soulless towns in south east England I've been through, empty 'local' shops and straightened shallow streams (of humanity). Oh and yes .... we agree on our absolute hatred of Harry Potter and the self-justified coffee shop twaddle of J.K. Rowling.

I found and followed your channel for the film camera content, but given I skip nearly everyone else’s vids when they are showcasing their digital but don’t hesitate to devote however long your vids are when you do the same, I’ve realised that the reason I follow you is for the way you weave the narrative and story. Always funny, informative, and balanced. You give your opinions while acknowledging biases (I use that word neutrally), and pretty finely balance the absurd with respect. I hope your students realise how lucky they are. (While an AA Milne reference would have absolutely topped it all, it’s not worth jeopardising your visa…)

    Automatic thumbs up for Totoro ;) Seriously tho, I have been browsing modular medium format cameras, something reasonably priced and this one seems to fit the bill. Yes, the Hass is too pricey for me but then the only Hasselblad I've handled that I actually liked was the fixed lens super-wide but they are a bit out of my budget. Also, I particularly like the fact that this is a fully mechanical machine, no pesky electronics to get in the way of the photography. I've been put off by the later Bronicas as they need a battery to work, small wierd little batteries that are hard to find... I had surprisingly good shooting experience with the 35mm f1.4 on the street, but not shooting from the hip. I use the AIS 28mm f2, or Leica-R 28mm f2.8, or SMC Takumar 24mm f3.5, Arsat 20mm f2.8 for zone focusing and shooting from the hip.

    Lovely camera. Have not had the opportunity to use one, though. Really portable for a 120! I have recently again shot the Voigtlander Bessa 1 (circa 1929) to disastrous results and am about to release my video on a Retina 1a.... now that is a more manageable folding camera! Definitely a colt-45 in a purse but like any gun, you need to spend a fair amount of time practicing drawing, aiming, cocking and firing before having it in your purse is going to do you any good. <sorry about torturing that analogy, Chief> I have a voigtlander Bessa i which while 6x9 does just fit into baggy jeans pockets which is awesome, but like all folders of the era managing the focus, aperture, speed dials - and even the red window winding - is “cumbersome” to say the least. Getting the best out of any of those beasts is a matter of “forgetting” what they don’t have, and mastering what they ask from us. Not usually a fan (because I suck at it) of the stitched pano, but you nailed that, and I particularly loved the stone arches. But again, the story you wove was definitely the winner. Great lenses and still reliable and reasonably smooth, but then, they were top of the line. I have kept my Voightländer. The visibility of the range finder is OK under normal light conditions. That’s why I always use ISO 200-400. A higher f stop for more leeway. On longer trips, it is usually in my suitcase.

The viewfinder is just a frame, though it does have one of those brilliant finders too for helping to compose from above. Even more fiddly than the Isolette and not as sharp but produces some beautiful dreamy 6x9 pics. I agree about the benefits of shooting with faster film. A few years ago l bought a E-PL6, my first venture into the Micro 4/3 system...It's a great little camera, since then I've added a E-PL8 and hope to add a Pen F sometime in the future. About forty years ago l bought a Leica 3b with a couple of lenses. My very first 'small' camera...l just loved it. Since then I've much preferred smaller cameras. The Olympus Pen range have that small chunky quality build feel...small, unobtrusive and functional...Great cameras.

    Hi Mark, I wanted this Konica model to excel because I really like the design and I've never shot or owned a Konica. They were renowned for some of their lenses in the day I believe. But I think your forensic approach when compared to the Canon put it in its place for me i.e. 2nd. although its a nifty camera in my view.. As ever great shots . - bubble tea and friends, hmm I wonder..

    Just found the channel and subscribed a. because you look like my neighbour and b. because your combination of dry humour and elderly cameras (or is that the other way round?) match my current personal neediness. The video of trials and tribulations with a TLR in particular reminded me of when I shot a roll of 120 in my Yash. and, in a moment of pure Alzheimer dad, promptly reversed the film and took a further 12 pictures. Imagine the puzzlement when the negs returned from the lab. You're a breath of fresh air after our American cousins, who, with the air of professionalism afforded by a flat cap and enormous glasses, tell us we've got it all wrong and- using equipment a Bill Gates would struggle to afford- spaff off a bunch of images that prove we probably have. Long live trial and a lot of errors.📸

    I really liked your blend of humor, art and teaching. Also your photos were well composed and shot well. I have the Canon Sure Shot Max and have enjoyed it over the years. I agree wholeheartedly with your evaluation of it. I don't like the hard push it takes to activate the shutter or I'd probably use it more. The photos from it are as sharp as any of my film point and shoots and sharper than most. I have the Epic/Mju II also which has some neat tricks but I think my favorite is the little black Stylus f/3.5. It doesn't always take the best photos, but it's a great little street shooter and fun to shoot. Some of Canon's later zoom cameras are real crackers too. Subscribed

      Thanks for the support, Rob! 180mm is a bit hard to handle and I did notice a few of the shots were a bit soft so I need to keep my hand steady but there's definitely something fun about picking out moments on the street from a distance.

      @@patternsinsand I think it's better because you get the full candid look of people without them conscience of being photographed, but still have enough room to get an idea of place. A 90 is good too. Film street photography is very challenging. You nailed it.

    So serendipitous! I recently bought a 200mm 2.5 vintage Pentax for me camera and was just today walking around and giving it a whirl. Manual focus nearly 20 pounds in weight, It is a beast. But, (I don't like starting a sentence with the word 'but' however I am told it is acceptable.) the lense forces me to slow down and plant myself. Take some time and don't expect to collect snaps.I want to use it for much of the summer and fully expect to develop a fine example of a Popeye left arm. Can the Mrs. and I retire to Perth? I hear it's really inexpensive. We could take portraits of each other with our big lenses anonymously. We don't have to meet, we can be long lens comrades. The photos were exceptional. I really liked a photo you hadn't included, the one with the woman in white hair and the zebra like top. Tip of the hat to you, this was an excellent episode.

      Thanks for the comment. You’re welcome to come to Perth. As for the cost of living, some things are inexpensive, some things aren’t. There’s a nation-wide housing shortage that’s putting up house and rental prices at the moment, but I like to keep reminding myself, things are still cheaper than Sydney!

      @@patternsinsand I have been thinking about the big lens this week. I have been playing with it. There is an aspect to the lens that I am finding that is unique to the long lens. The distortion of reality. The compression of space where the foreground and the distantant focal point all shrink. The space compresses and those things in the far ground actually become larger than life. The space flattens out and distant elements bring themselves forward and impress themselves on the focal plane. Makes me think of old Japanese perspective prints. All this depends on the f stop but still, wow. I'm a child with a new toy. I have for many years used nothing larger than a 55mm and now have discovered a wonder. I imagine the rental prices are outrageous. Maybe you have a shed we could use?

    • @patternsinsand
      @patternsinsand Před měsícem

      @@ComblessMan Love that compression - it just brings order to distant land and cityscapes. If I were to get a shed, I'd be too tempted to turn it into a darkroom, despite it sweltering in the aussie summer.
