Arab Jews have been successfully de-Arabized to lose their language and their culture, such that they no longer see themselves as part of the Arab ethos. Prof. Dr. Avi Shlaim who is himself an Iraqi Jew was hoping Arab Jews could act as a bridge between Arabs and Jews. Sadly that has not happened and as you rightly said Arab Jews are much more radicalized than their Ashkenazi and Sephardic counterparts. Hi, thank you so much for your feedback. Yes, admittedly the book is a scholarly / academic book for a very niche audience. I think I got the E-Book for $41 in 2020 if memory serves me right. As Dr. El-Badawi explained in the video, the word "Pagan" is analogous to "country bumpkin" and was meant as a pejorative. Regarding Hinduism and its influence on Islam, as I myself am from South Asia, I have no doubt that Hinduism's influence is far and wide. To what extent is something that the scholars will have to put together. Just as we see talks between Syriac Christianity and Islam, in the near future we will need to see historical critical scholars on Islam and Hinduism come together. Hello Carter, Let's back track a bit. 1. The land of Palestine was inhabited by indigenous Palestinian Jews, Christians, and Muslims for hundreds of years. 2. These people were living under Ottoman rule for 600 years and under British rule for 30 years. 3. But it was in those 30 years of British rule from 1918 to 1948 that the Europeans - owing to their rampant Anti-Semitism - decided to create a homeland for European Jews in Palestine; a land that was already inhabited. 4. This is what is known as a "settler-colonial" project. In a settler-colonial project, the settlers / colonists displace the indigenous population by ethnic cleansing and/or genocide. We've seen this happen in all Settler-Colonial societies from the USA to Canada to Australia to New Zealand. 5. Now interestingly, when Hitler killed off many of the European Jews, the proponents of this project (Zionism) decided to import Mizrachi / Arab Jews to fill up the gap. But by this time the Arabs were seen as the new enemy to replace the Nazis; hence why we saw a program to de-Arabize them to make them lose their Arab language and culture. And this is why today we see that Arab Jews tend to be more extreme than even the Ashkenazi European Jews. 6. The partition of 1948 was wrong. It was wrong because a minority European Jewish settlers were gift wrapped a country that they settled just 3 years before. And hence why the Palestinian Arabs did not accept a partition; they wanted independence and self-determination. 7. So what they wanted was ONE DEMOCRATIC STATE for everyone from the river to the sea. 8. And in today's day and age, that is still what they want: one democratic state from the river to the sea. I personally see no problem with this because it's a fair solution. Can you help explain why you see it as a problem? -Omar

Ottoman and British Rule: The duration under Ottoman rule is closer to 400 years (1517-1917) rather than 600. This period was followed by British mandate, not direct rule, which was established by international agreement to administer the region post-Ottoman Empire until a stable governance could be established. 3. European Intervention and Zionism: The Zionist movement, advocating for a Jewish homeland in Palestine, began in the late 19th century, significantly earlier than the British Mandate period, and was influenced by a variety of factors including rising nationalism and Jewish persecution in Europe, not solely European anti-Semitism. The Balfour Declaration of 1917, which supported a home for the Jewish people, predated the Holocaust and the significant increase in Jewish refugees. 4. Settler-Colonial Framework: Applying the settler-colonial model to Israel is a matter of significant debate. Unlike classic settler-colonial situations where a foreign power displaces indigenous populations, Jews have ancient historical ties to the region. The analogy with examples like the USA or Australia also simplifies the unique and complex historical and political context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. 5. Migration of Mizrachi Jews: The immigration of Mizrachi Jews was not solely a result of needing to "fill a gap" left by Holocaust victims. Many were fleeing persecution and seeking refuge in an established Jewish state. While there have been tensions and cultural assimilation challenges within Israel, attributing extremist tendencies to Mizrachi Jews compared to Ashkenazi Jews is an overgeneralization and not supported by broad evidence. 6. 1948 Partition: The 1948 UN Partition Plan proposed to divide the British Mandate of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, recognizing the claims and aspirations of both Jews and Palestinian Arabs. The plan was accepted by Jewish leaders but rejected by Arab leaders, which indicates complexities in the pursuit of self-determination by both groups. 7. One Democratic State: The concept of a single democratic state from the river to the sea encompasses significant political, practical, and ideological challenges, including issues of security, identity, and governance. It remains a highly controversial solution and is not universally accepted as feasible or desirable by all parties involved. 8. Current Aspirations: While some groups advocate for a one-state solution, there are diverse perspectives within both the Israeli and Palestinian communities. Many still support a two-state solution as a way to address the national aspirations and rights of both peoples. The feasibility and fairness of any solution depend heavily on mutual recognition and security assurances.

For my part, if on the spectrum of interviewers, from the most interventionist to the least, we have at one extreme, say, Chris Hedges and at the other Owen Jones, with both of whom I'm sure you are familiar, I admire Hedges for the way in which he asks very informed questions and then lets his interviewees answer at whatever length they wish, while he remains silent and unexpressive, neither assenting nor disagreeing by means of nods or shakes of the head, and then follows up with the next question, which only then makes clear to us the extent to which he does in fact agree with what has been said, or thinks it requires some additional or divergent commentary. Owen Jones, on the other hand, with his constant nodding, his face a continual play of assenting, approving, admiring, perplexed, etcetera, gestures, turns his interviews into the public spectacle of his own personal interaction with his interviewees. Even though I generally agree with Jones' points of view, I have to turn the image off to be able to get through his interviews. I'll definitely watch your interview with Nurit Peled-Elhanan. Hello Julian, We would love to have Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the show as I've just finished reading his 800+ page autobiography; almost as big as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Admittedly the book was actually an excellent read, Mr. Netanyahu has got a great story to tell. But I don't know if he's available to come on the show given that he's got his hands full at the moment with Gaza and Iran. Should you happen to know the best way to reach out to him do let us know. We also reached out to Prof. Dr. Benny Morris to talk about "The Birth Of The Palestinian Refugee Problem" but we've not heard back from him yet. He most likely got a lot of interview requests after appearing on Lex Fridman's podcast with Mouin Rabbani, Prof. Dr. Norman Finkelstein, and Destiny. By the way you didn't answer the question I had posed in the other thread, i.e. if Israeli Prime Ministers were serious about having a viable Palestinian state, then why did none of them stop the settler expansions between 1967 till present date?
