HO scale micro layout Klein&Gunstig AG

Since moving on Greenwood, my last layout.. I'm still planning the next one for my shelf. In the meantime, I was having a sort through my hobby stuff and I thought I'd dig out this micro that I started last year and play with some West German HO. It started life as a OO rural scene but I quickly added the industrial flats and just need to tidy up some scenics.

What's crazy about this layout is that less tracks definitely make it feel like more realistic. Sometimes I see layouts where every square centimetre is covered in tracks and it honestly loses realism. Thanks for being my constant inspiration!
Really like what you're doing here, and Boomer Diorama channel has an excellent method for creating beautiful paved areas, czcams.com/video/HgSgYXyhVgY/video.html
I’ve really enjoyed watching your updates on this project and it’s nice now to go back and rewatch these earlier videos. That SD40-2 with the hoppers at the 7:43 mark is just a superb thing to watch.
Thank You! Yeah, I do like that SD-40 (Kato) .. In my imaginary RR world, the Midland Belt starting buying EMD power and patching it out (most of my 'Yellow Pine' locos are Alcos)
Prototypical train operations for me, the only 'war games' type stuff that I have some interest in is the DCS aviation combat simulator (which I infrequently use).
No worries, that keep the hobbies fun, we all have different interests :-)
I always look forward to your videos!
Thank you!
Nice update and I really like that yellow building, I think it turned out great! Those little details that you added from prototype pictures really make a difference. Also cool idea you had for creating the roof structure. Keep it up and best regards from the Springfield & Western (also a two turnout layout).
Thanks! The roof was a happy experiment ;-)
Always good to get an update from you! The building came out really well and adds a lot of realism to the scene. The trailer provides a nice backdrop transition, especially with the section of photo back drop. It all works cohesively. Cheers
Cheers :-)
Nice , appealing layout you are creating. Love to hear how your past experiences have lead you to a new way of looking at creating and finishing scenes. Cheers !
Thanks. I hope I don't keep repeating ALL of the same mistakes and learn something each time :-)
I love the dice idea. The Building looks great!
Thanks!
Lovely as always. Have you considered chucking a velcro-fastened curtain to the lower fascia and/or a wider upper fascia to hide the shelf brackets? Your layout has a great aesthetic look and I think it would be greatly enhanced if the eyes were guided in those wide shots? Just a thought, take care!
Thankyou! Interesting.. I'm generally not too worried about above and below as I might be for an exhibition layout - my attention is in the scene and I need to access the shelves regularly - but yes, when you then start videoing, that becomes more of a consideration. The brackets on the inside are a pain as the depth is fairly limited and I wondered about perhaps some kind of translucent cover/layer to hide those
@@moghobbystuff I think just making the upper fascia extend a little lower so that the brackets are masked when the view is from track level wouldn't be too onerous? Maybe best done after the major scenics are in place however. Regarding the curtain - I think most exhibition layouts also have a curtain to hide the legs - but of course, it's your layout!
Gotcha.. Yep, I'm considering that, as you suggest, been putting it off a little until I've completed stuff as it's a fairly narrow gap already. (and I'd need to move the LED lights) Yes, you're right, if I was exhibiting I would definitely be hiding the bottom etc, but this layout not going anywhere! I might experiment with a temporary one for videos. Thanks for your interest, food for thought :-)
Is this O gauge?
Hi.. no it’s HO
@@moghobbystuff , thanks; poor depth perception. :( Aren't you glad I'm not driving? :)
:-D
Great attention to detail, I really like that. If I could suggest one small thing - The tires on the trailer are too new looking. I use Pan Pastels on mine, then spray a fixative. Looking forward to some operations. Take care - Bill.
Nice tip thanks .. the trailer is untouched as yet, but definitely on the list :-)
Everything looks good and I like the photo in the background. Also those vents look nice and I have seen black run off in the corners of them I the real world. That red faded pipe is correct on some buildings plus for the record they don't actually work in the real world... I hope yours does in the layout world. Lol
Hopefully never need to test it ! Great tip re the vents .. I was wondering about adding some very light weathering and that kind of detail will work well
I really enjoy your and I like the simplicity of it, but also the detail that you’re going into on the buildings
Thank You Paul. I'm a simple person ;-) I am trying to take a little more time over this one
you are correct, the red/pink pipe is part of the fire riser/fire sprinkler/fire control system. It was probably painted red, then faded to pink over time and weathering. The proto photo looks like it's on raised ground/grass. Yours looks like it's setting on the ramp, which isn't a problem, just add some yellow bollards so the trailers don't back into the fire riser. Overall, your switching layout looks good. Thanks, Terry
Thank you! Yes, spotted that I'd 'moved it' to the ramp, so great shout about the bollards, thanks Terry!
Very nice work!
Thank you
Your small shelf layout is very inspirational, and adding a non-rail served industry is something I need to consider. * subscribed *
Thanks! Eventually I'll get round to working on the actual rail-served parts :-)
Nice looking scene…awesome job on the scratch built warehouse
Thanks 👍
Nice little layout!
Thanks!
Like it, subscribed!
Thank you!
I made a copy of your ops sheet (hope you don't mind) and gave it a shot on my layout...it works great! My layout is roughly the same size and I was using JMRI but it wasn't quite working for me. The dice and tables for ops is my new favorite method for switching:)
Of course! I'm sure I borrowed the idea from elsewhere (also play with toy soldiers so dice tables are pretty common) I used 'switchlist' for other layouts but just wasn't what I wanted for this one. Great to hear it's working for you too :-)
Well it is going forward. Very nice job and like before many details. I like your layouts. Thanks.
Thanks Frank!
Looking good, the yellow on the warehouse works well to my eye. I know the feeling when it comes to fitting everything in time wise!
Thank you :-)
Real nice good job
Thanks!
looking good
Thanks 👍
Something about your voice makes my one (of two) cats immediately go to sleep. Thanks for updating us on the layout. Happy modeling, from Washington State.
:-D One of your cats has more sense (or taste) than the other !
Excellent stuff as always mate!
Thank You Rob :-)
The layout is coming along nicely, can’t wait for an update!
Most excellent trackside weeds and vegetation; as good as I've ever seen. I love you Brits as though you are my long-lost cousins (which you probably are), but I have a devil of a time understanding the audio portion of your YT submissions. Perhaps my old ears, perhaps the quality of the recording equipment, perhaps just not hearing a lot of "true English" on a regular basis? Who knows? But, I appreciate your videos anyway. Thanks, I am much obliged.
Thank You! I've struggled with the audio, trying out a couple of different microphones and I hope it's getting better as I know how off-putting it can be!
What a wonderful, metallic, melodious sound that old Baldwin makes. Delightful. Thanks for the video.
I love the freight car weathering! Especially the patch-outs on the blue CNW boxcar. Excellent work! Your backdrops are awesome too
Thank you! I'll only take partial credit for the blue box car, it was already patched, I just did a basic 'dirty' weathering job on it! :-)
I love it, I've watched a short video on this also, 10:09 love that locomotive you've got running :)
You're speaking my language, yes 2 turnouts:)
What an awesome layout .... I love it
Thank You!
I have consulted his website many times over the years. I would like to express my thanks to Him & his friends and family who have kept it going since his passing. Very much appreciated, thank you x
This is a pet peeve here, but I gave up after watching the guy on the locomotive go past 20 + times
Thanks for the feedback. Watching switching isn't for everyone. (and I make him walk these days! :-) )
@@moghobbystuff don’t get me wrong,I do switching all the time, matter of fact my entire layout is a switching layout, my issue was only the guy riding the engine back and forth, back and forth……
Gotcha.. thanks. He is a lazy bugger! (and I couldn't film him getting off and throwing the switches or coupling the cars, which is what I imagined). Look forward to seeing your switching layout sometime :-)
Great video - keep up the good work and try turning the sound down on the loco it will be more realistic down a notch or two.👍
Thanks.. I do generally tend to keep the volume levels quite low but I know sometimes the camera/microphone tend to exaggerate it
Superb
The way you blended the scenery-- from ground , to trees, to sky is just flawless! The trackplan is also very well done, and is very workable! GREAT JOB!!
Thank you very much!
That looks great! Enjoy your work and your videos.
thank you!
Superb
Great. Job love the leo
Looking great. I agree with the previous commenter - leave the overspray. You could always just weather it in a bit if it's a glossy finish.
The grass looks good. I used the rattle can layering spray and sprinkled some fine green tufts and yellow flowers on. I've ordered one of Chris's Boxcars, should be here in a few days. I've told him the next time I see him I want the box signing 😄
Cheers Keith.. good idea thanks. And yes, I'm sure he will! :-D
Layout is looking great. I prefer when a loco is set up with braking on F2 as I feel it gives a little more control and realistic operation.
Cheers.. you've got a much better idea of how to drive a locomotive ! I've started to look through the locos to see which I can set up for braking (a mix of decoders doesn't help to keep things simple)
Don't "fix" the spatter on the road! Don't fix it, don't explain it, and don't apologize for it. Stuff happens to roads. The "explanation" can be in your viewers heads.
Thank you - good idea :-)
I’ve just started a switching layout myself and just looking for some ideas. Not really good on videography so not sure about how to film!!!! Mine will be a total length of 21’ X 24”, L shape…….
Good luck- hope to see you sharing ? My 'ideas' will usually be about going smaller! Have a go.. I think using a tripod or something to keep the camera steady is important.. spending time editing cannot be underestimated, and I'm still wrestling with the audio, getting a decent microphone and working out how to use it :-)
Hey, Thanks for the reply Mog. Really appreciate that.
Good job..that little switcher sounded amazing!!!!!
I really admire what you are able to do with a small space. I think it's important to show people that you don't have to have a lot of space to get involved in the hobby and still produce something of high quality and interest.
Thank you.. I came into the hobby via Carl Arendts micro layouts, so 8 feet is generous for me :-)
Looks great
Thank you
