I decided to document some of my experiments with historical methods of steel production. In this video I explore different carburizer activators for blister steel. Excuse the baggy quilted shirt and wool hat, winter came early to Michigan, and it is really cold here!
The making of a Cashen kukri

Master bladesmith Kevin Cashen makes a forged kukri (khukuri) from start to finish. Note -A common comment is on the spelling of the knife, I hope I can clear this up with a post more people can see before commenting- I do not feel that I am qualified to call myself a khukuri maker, so I prefer to title my blade with the Anglicized version out of respect to the craftsmen of Nepal.
what material did you use for the handle?
Typically I would use a fine hardwood or buffalo horn, but this blade was going to a very warm and arid climate, so I used black paper micarta this time.

Kinda off subject, other than what you do with it, that massive anvil is almost as grand as the artful blades you make on it. How old and how heavy if I may ask?
The anvil is a 1907, 350# Fisher. It was a gift from Dr. Jim Lucie, world's leading Scagel authority, bladesmith, physician and dear friend who is very missed.
Calcium carbonate was probably popuplar as it was more readily available in the form of sea shells but also from lime rock.
An artist at work with many years of hand on experiance.

I would love to know how to refurb the leather properly - how did you get the leather on yours looking so beautiful?
Thank you, I try to use the best book binding leather I can obtain and the results are what you see.

Sodium bicarbonate is obviously not the same chemistry and I have not seen any documentation supporting its use.

I am sorry, I have not taken any new orders for some time. I occasionally make stock for shows or on speculation but most of my time is taken up with lecturing and teaching the craft.
