ORGAN TUNING: Setting the pitch and laying the first tuning scale on completely untuned pipework.
WARNING: This video is intended for anyone interested in the technicalities of tuning. For anyone else, it will be like watching paint dry. You have been warned(!)
The recording was made in the workshop as part of the restoration of a small organ which had been built, or repaired, in the 1860s, and had become unplayable.
The completed organ can by seen and heard on You Tube, by searching "Samuel Wesley - Gavotte for organ" uploaded by Culture Vannin.
The pipework having been cleaned and repaired and newly fitted with stainless steel tuning slides or newly fitted stoppers, was therefore violently out of tune.
The first step (not shown) is to set the middle C Principal pipe to a reasonable standard pitch (in this case, A440) by soldering on an extra length of metal and then trimming it to length. This pipe is not fitted with a tuning slide, as it holds the pitch for the whole organ and is not usually altered. (Fine adjustments are made with a tuning cone.
The video starts with this 'pitch pipe' corrected. The C pipes of the other stops are then tested to see if they will be tuneable at that pitch.
After that (starting at 2min. 39 secs in) the middle octave of the Principal stop has to be tuned to its middle C in such a way that the 12 notes above (C#, D, D# E, etc.) are evenly spread (musically speaking) between middle C and the C above. This style of tuning is called 'equal temperament', because the notes are equally 'tempered' (i.e. 'spread', by tuning them sharper or flatter than perfect) across the octave. With this system, there should be no 'key colour' between the different keys, though some people claim key colour still exists in equal temperament tuning. Whether this is so, merely because the person has an degree of perfect pitch, as I suspect, is not possible to determine, though it would be interesting to have someone listen to a piece in what they deem to be a 'bright' key, and then play the identical recording at a different pitch, using modern technology. If key colour exists, the piece should still be 'bright', despite the pitch change.
Notice that the tuning of this middle octave is carried out by the tuner, solely though listening to a series of intervals (fourths and fifths, musically speaking) held by his tuning assistant at the keys. Each pair is tuned either sharp or flat by it's unique amount. The tuner has to memorize the degree of out-of-tuneness for each of the 12 pairs, taking account of temperature and other factors. No electronic tuner is needed for someone who has this technique.
The intervals held by the tuner's assistant are: C-G, G-D, D-A, E-E, E-B, B-F#, C-F, F-A#, A#-D#, D#-G#, G#=C#, and (the test interval, as F# has already been tuned) C#=F#.
This first tuning is to get the notes roughly correct, and was followed by another, finer tuning.
The rest of the stop was then tuned with reference to the middle octave, and the other stops of the organ with reference to the Principal stop.

      Sorry to have missed your question, Hamouda. As for what you can do with this particular wand, you'll have to ask Tom! By now, both Tom and the wand will be very much attuned to one another, and I'm afraid I have no idea what he uses it for - indeed, in our world, that would be rather impolite to ask, and equally I cannot divulge what Tom has gone on to do. • @ProfPetros

      Rosewood is a dense, hard, many-coloured, often brittle timber, and as such it is suited to the witch or wizard who makes decisions and takes actions spontaneously, without too much consideration of the alternative possibilities. This can be a good or a bad thing, of course, depending on the character and natural inclinations of the person concerned.

We have our likes and dislikes, our triumphs and failures, our friendships and those with whom we do not get on. There are the good, the bad, the selfish and the selfless, the stupid and the intelligent - just like any group of human beings; and, like any other group of people, how far we get in life depends upon luck, opportunity, education and application.

      There *are* concealment charms, it is true, but these are usually used to hide small objects from anyone - magical or non-magical, in the same way that you might hide something inside a hollow book. It is not really a practical method, and it certainly would not work for something as large as a building.

    I'll be honest, I had tried ordering a pre-tied three-piece accessory set for my fiancé during this quarantine as he is not well-versed in fashion (yet), nor could I afford even a moderately priced ascot for him. He and I are both financially struggling and in a private American University. However, I have nearly three years on him and have slightly better financial standing, hence why his accessories come from my pocketbook. Anyhow, we marry in just over a week's time, and I'm still sewing my own gown and making my own jewelry and shoes only to realize the tie is not going to arrive. I'm going to have to make him one with the leftover cheap satin that I'm using for my dress. Mind you, I know the frustration of cheap satin and how to make do as it's all I can afford. Thanks to this video, I now have the confidence to not only make an ascot, but also how to tie it. It would surely dress up my groom's untailored tuxedo that his uses for choir with Uni and will noticeably be reusing for our wedding ceremony. Here's to making fabulous out of frugal! 🥂

      A great comment, and I entirely agree with you, regarding 'making your own.' Most people are completely clueless as to how to tie or wear an Ascot, so there is no recognised appearance for one. (I imagine that, in Victorian or Edwardian times, the details of how you tied your Ascot would be admired, or not, but these days, when no-one much knows how to tie a bow tie, and many cannot make a proper job of tying a standard neck-tie, any kind of Ascot is bound to attract admiration and general amazement. And when you add to that the remark, 'I made it, myself,' your are bound to be on a winner! Congratulations and good luck on the big day!

    Professor, are there any magical objects owned by non-wizard in museums ?

    • @ProfPetros
      @ProfPetros Před 4 lety

      There are, inevitably, some magical objects which have found their way into the non-magical world. Where these are still 'active' in some way, or capable of being accidentally used, they are traced and either retrieved or otherwise made inert - usually the latter, as removing an object simply draws attention to it. The very few which 'slip through the net' are the ones which turn up as 'talismans' or 'lucky charms'. When this happens, it always comes to the attention of someone with magical abilities, and this results in the 'talisman' being made inert: which is why so few of these objects work as they were originally said to!

    • @ProfPetros
      @ProfPetros Před 4 lety

      This has happened more often than you might think, but in every case it has happened without the knowledge of those in the non-magical world - for obvious reasons. The times when something of real importance just happened to 'turn out right' might well be instances of interference from a person, or people, with magical ability. It is not unknown for someone in the 'non-magic' world to have a friend from the 'other side', and in there are cases of one friend helping another, as you might expect, though always without the knowledge of the recipient!

  • @samrubbertommywatergun5098

    • @ProfPetros
      @ProfPetros Před 4 lety

      Dear Sam, The immediate answer to your question is 'yes' of course there are. With their innate advantages, and human nature being what it is, there has been more than one case of a person with magical ability who has used that gift in the non-magical world to their advantage. The penalties for doing so (from 'our' side) are severe, though, and such people therefore maintain a strictly low profile, both from the magical as well as the non-magical community. Otherwise, the world would be full of such people, preying upon others.

      Dear Esther, Practical tuition in magic is always given, either from relatives or magically-gifted friends, or (more usually) through the school system of the country in which you live, so for that reason I am afraid that I cannot advise you. There is one other presentation in which you may be interested, though I do not think it will be of much help to you: try searching for 'Foxglove Charm'. Good luck!

    Professor, what do you do in alchemy ? Is it concerned with turning lead into gold and making a philosopher’s stone or can we do much more ?

    • @ProfPetros
      @ProfPetros Před 4 lety

      I am limited in what I allowed to say in answer to that question, Sam, but I can confirm that turning lead into gold was a misconceived ambition of some of the earlier experimenters in what came to be known as 'alchemy'. We certainly do not recognise them, now, as alchemists, though their early attempts did lead others along a more fruitful path. Alchemical Studies - as a school subject - deals with the basic principles of the nature of materials, both living and dead, natural and man-made, and the way in which they react and influence each other and the human beings, plants and animals around them. For instance, Tom's relationship with what we might reasonably call *his* wand-tree would fall within that subject. His presence had an influence on the tree, and it its turn, the tree would undoubtedly have modified Tom's perception and guided his thinking in a certain way. That would probably explain how he came to perform the complex magic of core insertion; something which should have been beyond a person of his age, experience, and ability. Equally, the manner in which the manticore skin, the wand, and Tom, influenced each other, when he attempted disapparition in the way in which he did, is another example. Alchemical Studies is a very wide and complex area of interest and there are many who have spent their lives in investigating it.

    Prof. Petros , wouldn’t some people sense that a place near them has hidden magic or is hidden with the help of magic ?

    • @ProfPetros
      @ProfPetros Před 4 lety

      In broad terms, you are correct, thought you must remember that some people will be much more sensitive than others. Even so, I think we have all experienced feeling that there was something 'odd' or 'strange' about a place or a situation, and, in at least some cases, this could be the reason why.

      The character of Merlin is part of a legend - the British legend of King Arthur. Whether there is any truth in any legend is debatable, i.e. it cannot be proved nor disproved - that is the way of it, with legends. But it is nice story, all the same, with some good moral lessons within it.

      I think the threat of being burned at the stake, or rolled down a hill in a spiked barrel, would be a good enough reason to maintain a low profile, don't you?! (Sadly, there are many ignorant human beings in the world, and it is the nature of such people to distrust and even attack what they do not understand.

      Dear Khaleed, though he puts it rather bluntly, Daniel is correct, from a practical point of view. Everyone has *some* magical ability, but in most cases it is too weak, even to show. Those we term 'magical' have that ability to a degree to which it can become useful if properly channelled.

      @ProfPetros Před 4 lety

      Dear Khaleed, I think you meant to write, ' ... of which you know?' (Sorry, but I could not resist correcting your grammar.) To answer your question, I cannot say. As in any community, we all have our strengths and weaknesses in different aspects of life.

    • @ProfPetros
      @ProfPetros Před 4 lety

      Dear Khaleed, Your question is not a valid one, I am afraid, in that there is no 'war' between the magical and the non-magical communities. If you meant to ask if the two communities would ever come to fully know and accept one another, then I think the answer will be 'yes' - but it will take a very long time, due to prejudices on both sides.
