Fitting Omega Pistons to A-Series conrods for Classic mini
In this video I explain my method for fitting (any) pistons that have a "press fit" or interference fit little-end gudgeon pin (also known as a wrist pin).
As standard ALL classic mini A series engines from day 1 had this type of design.
I take ZERO responsibility if you get this wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Last weekend I went to over to Bingley Hall (Stafford) as per every year - It's the first proper Mini show of the year and one a lot of us look forwards to :-) Excellent show as always, and rammed as usual!! However... I was very disappointed with the lack of Turbos on show inside, I found just the one - Maybe we need to get a club stand together for next year? I did film with a couple of turbo...

Swapping a Mini A-Series camshaft, without removing the engine!!

Today I finally got round to doing something that I've needed to do for ages - Swapping out the Avon Bar Phase 2 turbo cam for the MED RS cam. As I am going N/A for this year and having really not covered many miles at all last year with the turbo, I am satisfied that the cam followers are in a good enough condition to allow me to do a cam swap without dropping them out. But how....? This metho...

Reminds me of driving my brother's Mk1 Cooper.Happy days
I was always taught never use old followers with a new cam, (no matter how old or new they are).
I've never seen a dishwasher that small.
my set colour looks like that of the fake ones 😂. nice way to break in a new engine, smh. one exhaust bank has black smoke the other is too lean, so it is likely it's the injectors
The moment you buy a Mini it`s a money pit, but they are such fun you just gotta do it.
Vinger and baking soda will get it pretty much brand new looking
Does it take of the carbon build up too?
5 years later, I'm wondering the same thing...well, misc. VW parts. 30 USD for a used washer..hmmm I wonder if ultrasonic would work work on that corrosion on the outer block ?
Anyone miss this guys videos? Been a while hope he’s doing ok.
You couldnt have a gf or wife when you made this video? lol
That is exactly what someone suggested to me years ago when I asked if it was possible to do this.
Agree 100% but the results are priceless
now you gotta try engine degreaser on pots and pans .
Great video. Thank you for the clear explanation of your system for installing the pistons to the con rods. I have a set of Country pistons for my 1275 engine and the gudgeon pins are tight in the pistons. If I warm the piston a little (about 25 degrees c) the pins slide. Bad set of pistons??
Just bought one myself , how much would you charge to blast it for me lol it’s going on an MGB GT. Urs look like new !
Hi! Not got my cabinet any more :-(
@@TurboMiniTV gutting was a great job and video thanks
@@TheCaffeineRacer Thank you :-) Hoping to finally get onto the race mini build , finally !!
Great video, very helpful. 👍
Have you ever fitted floating piston pins to the classic mini rods? I'm not sure if its worth doing or not
I've not but I know it's been done. As for "worth doing" ... well that's for the do-er to decide.
@@TurboMiniTV OK cheers. it seems more hassle for the same thing. So I'm not sure what to do at the moment
Should be called turbo bullshit, spam video do not watch
Which supplier did you get the genuine ones from please in the UK?
Clio 182 a brilliant car 👍🏻
A cam and followers bed in together you can't simple switch the cam in a 1275 A+ block. You can in a 998 as the followers can be swapped. That cam would chew up old followers.
I made this VERY clear in the video. also you cant access followers on most pre-a+ engines either, only early blocks had access to them.
Thanks for that. I was trying to explain to my wife how I once built a four speed box for a straight 6 on the kitchen table without any presses for the bearings. She had the puzzled look people often get with complex items like this. I'll show her this video, maybe she'll get it, lol. Cheers.
Thanks for this video. Worked a treat.
nice!!
Amazing vids bro
‘The Coolant decided to errr... come out’ I love British people 😂
Hello. Just watching this now, 4 years later. Any recollection of the gaiter you used to keep the crud out as mentioned in this video?
Hi, errrrrrrrrrm, you know , I can't!! Sorry !!
This is an interesting topic and there is some useful information in this video. However, there is only about 2 minutes of useful information. There is no mention of where to find the parts you are replacing and no illustration of fitting those parts. I think you need to keep your videos more on topic with less chatter about your channel. You can have better opportunity for chatter in something like a question and answer session. Still good work and I will be watching your channel regularly. Thanks for the rod change tips!
31 degrees and yet you're wearing jeans 😂. Also, no idea how fast I was going officer... speedo doesn't work! 7 port sounds epic by the way and you drive it properly!
I'm sorry I missed this vid, I have a Speeduino sitting in the drawer waiting to go on my mini. I know it'd be a ballache to do it retrospectively but how about some info on wiring and setting it up?
Hi, unfortunately it's so long ago now that I've completely forgotten everything I learned when doing it. I'd suggest getting on the forum and there's a Facebook group too I think.
Pulls well, up them hills. 👍
Haha also work on people
Bloody clever way of doing it with the stopper in place ! I can imagine that the first couple of times doing this job could feel a bit frantic with the limited time before the conrod grabs the gudgeon pin ! Excellent little tutorial , will remember this method for the future ! Cheers !
Thank you! Yes it's often a matter of confidence... Once you've done a few sets though, you know how things react etc.
You're brave.... Wouldn't fancy risking a set of Omegas myself. Well done.
No risk at all really (done right), standard way to fit pins, I'd certainly never press fit cold.
hi, this video is from 2017. i'm curious to know the result of speeduino on st170. i'm thinking to do the same. thanks!
Hi, I ended up using it on a 7 port mini actually, it worked well
thank you very much)
We had parts washer at work and it wash basically just a dishwasher , just get cheap S/H dishwasher in shed/garage water supply plus waste pipe you got yourself great parts washer for about £30
What kind of gears are those?
That is the straight cut clubman set from MED, and standard helical drops.
I know this video was from a few years ago but how did you find the 7 port head from Pierce Manifolds in the US. I am think of buying one from them ?
Hi, I bought it in Jan/Feb 2019, it was from Webcon in the UK, but they said they were manufactured by edelbrock in the US, for Pierce. It was "ok" but needed some work before fitting.
Mini porn !
I'm looking for the video where you talk about the turbo. Did you do one?
I didn't actually, it's a standard Garrett T3 from the Metro turbo.
Really liking your videos. I'm building a turbo morris minor at the moment. I'm looking to just use a mpi mini manifold. I was wondering why you wouldn't just use the spi or mpi one instead of building your own.
Thanks! The reason for NOT using an MPI manifold is that it injects into each shared port directly. in order to stop port-robbing by timing the 2 injectors correctly you would need a CAM sensor to know the cam phase compared to the crank. MPI blocks already have this so could be used, but my SPi block didnt. so went for a "wet manifold" setup. The SPi is a bono-block incorporating the single injector but it's not built in such a way that it can be boosted, nor can the injector flow enough.
Cool speeduino 😀
Thanks 😁
Compliments !!! Ottimo lavoro!!! I want made the same Job on mi Mini ! How Is possibile to contact you? Tank
Hi, you can email me on: me@peter-wright.com
You should pre-wash the parts thoroughly first with a degreaser and the thoroughly rinse it. That would get rid of 75% of the grime that would stink up or clogged the dish washer. The dish washer is mainly for finishing.
Wife out of town?))
Washing machines do the job right well (cleaning by hand the grease and grime before the wash cycle is better to facilitate the work), but you need to keep attention on what material te parts are made, aluminum get corroded/oxidized by the standard dishwasher cleaner tabs/liquid. That's why in aluminum pans it is advised not to wash them in the dishwasher. So when working with engine cylinder head and others aluminum components it's better to use aluminum compatible cleaner
Please show how you fitted your dash. I'm building a 1275gt and the dash is confusing me.
I cant now as it's sold, but I made a bracket up at each far side.
so what happened then?
Sorry missed this. As yet very little, really bad few months for me. I'm back on it now.
