UNDERRATED Cult Classic - The Amityville Horror (1979)
The Amityville Horror is a 1979 American supernatural horror film directed by Stuart Rosenberg, and starring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger. The film follows a young couple who purchase a home haunted by combative supernatural forces. It is based on Jay Anson's 1977 book of the same name, which documented the alleged paranormal experiences of the Lutz family who briefly resided in the Amityville, New York home where Ronald DeFeo Jr. committed the mass murder of his family in 1974. It is the first entry in the long-running Amityville Horror film series, and was remade in 2005.

I was underwhelmed with this one, but it has its moments. Maybe it would be better remembered if it was more so-bad-it's-entertaining? Nevertheless, there's another slow-burn haunted house movie from the 1970s that seems even less remembered: Burnt Offerings. Probably because it wasn't as huge a hit, and didn't spawn a hundred plus sequels.

I moved to the town next to Amityville (Massapequa) in 1979 when I was 10 and the moviev was just coming out. I didn't see the movie, but I DID read the book. And my supportive parents took me for a drive past the house. I don't think I got a good night's sleep for about a year without expecting to see something coming up the stairs, (which I could see from my open bedroom door) or avoiding looking out the bedroom window at night, for fear of seeing Jodie's eyes looking in. We also had a creepy basement with a closet under the stairs - luckily it wasn't painted red.

Saw this originally in the theater on the first release. It didn't confuse me so much as it bored me to tears. And l don't bore easily. Now l just watched the four hour version, and it didn't impress me. Yes, the production detail is amazing and the music is sad and memorable. But the actors, with the exception of Woods and Weld, are flat and uninspiring. The lead character is a rapist? The other characters are voyuers, thugs and thinly drawn. And McGovern's character doesn't appear to age while everyone else does? Is this a metaphor l missed? Yes, l understand there is a lot going on here, but like ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, it seemed like more of a film about settling and and mood more than character and great story telling. And finally, the aging makeup is really sub par, and will look worse once an upgrade is provided. I do miss epic filmmaking on this scale, and God bless Leone for being able to make it. But the whole project felt cold and detatched, and l still am as unmoved by it as l was back in 1984. Just doesn't do it for me.

Certainly about Simone sexuality and the abuses Mort lays on both him and Simone. Bob Hopkins was as fine as any actor in that end scene. You have just watched a brutal gangster turned businessman getting his dues. Keaton seems like he's playing Beetlejuice instead of being Beetlejuice. It's like a Super Bowl commercial where the aging actor plays their iconic role just for the 30 second commercial. Keatons mannerisms don't seem as natural. It's like his studied his performance and is trying to recapture it. Also the scenarios are reused. Remember the scene where his face opens up and is scary? Remember? Let's do that again. Exact same thing.

The ending is not real and very surreal. Max jumping in the truck to his death makes no sense and is elaborate without witnesses that he would need to substantiate his death. Additionally, there is no blood in the truck blades (which they seem to want to show the audience) or evidence of his demise. The partiers driving by seem very out of place as well.

The remake did not convey the almost animalistic hatred that Carter had. I also love Roy Budd's soundtrack. Sadly Budd is no longer with us but he left behind a formidable collection of music.

Fans will hate this no matter what thr director did. This video is proof of that. If this was on a xeno planet you'd be bitching that it feels to Prometheus or Covenant. As for the lead, she would have been inevitably compared to Ripley no matter what. People think female characters can never match their precious Ripley and that also set a bar too high.

Apparently, this movie lost a lot of money,at least in the US. It was based on an autobiography about a young mobster. He wrote it to try to show the real side of that life that was undesirable. I guess people just love to romanticize these gangsters and want their Godfather pictures.
