Some of those tools you mentioned I would consider pretty much basic I'm a DIY and I have them and have had them for years. But if there's certain tools you expect a guy to have you kind of really got to ask that ahead of time.

I had a guy bring me a mid 60’s Austin Princess limo. Engine was seized solid. Nothing I tried to get it free worked. Pulled motor and had machine shop try . They also couldn’t get it to free up, not without significant damage and then parts would be impossible or custom. Customer took care of back , didn’t like my suggestion of dropping a Chevy drive train. 2 years later the guys son in law, starting a limo business was driving it. Turned out they got a Chevy drive train put in somewhere else.

Try and explain something like that to some dickhead service manager that knows nothing about mechanic work but wants to know why the job is taking longer than they quoted

Not a pro but have abused a lot of equipment. Sometimes I find the expensive stuff disappoints and cheap stuff surprises you. Bought a roofing nailer for less than a rebuild kit for a Bosch. Thing was dropped on concrete multiple time from over 20 feet, covered in tar, its done over 20 roofs, half the time it was never oiled and it's still going. For auto work I still prefer air tools.

I live in Canada but often shop Harbor Freight when I am in the USA. I remember snapping a cheap Harbor Freight socket back in the day doing an alternator off the Florida Turnpike. Luckily somebody had one I was able to borrow. They have come a long way and plan to pick up some of their pro series to try.

Never done an alignment but did read a book on front suspension geometry back in the 60s … 😮 this stuff is REALLY rocket science .. turning, keeping the tire flat on the ground, radius different between inside and outside tires, Ackerman effect … caster,, camber … * sigh * at one time in my life … about 65 years ago, I thought I was smart … 😢

Some customers are just ungrateful and really dont know nor care how crappy their car really is. Knowing these particular customers are just going to complain about something they know absolutely nothing about, itd probably be better to just tend to the condenser and drier. Advise them that other items needs attention, but their a/c system has been repaired as per request. Youre doing great by making sure your repair job is 100%. But like i said, they really dont care about their car. Im not gonna lie and say my vehicles are pristine (cause theyre not), but i am not financially set to handle and make them as such. Routine maintenance and necessary repairs as i can handle at the given time. Just my $0.02 :)

My company (small regional family owned) has a location 45 minutes northwest of me that they opened 5 years ago. The guy in my position running it is a European car master and has the manufacturer master certs as well , which oddly enough he says are bs and then makes the hand jack off motion 😂. Anyhow they decided to go all out, and then went all out again two more times. The alignment machine 60k and then also have the thing that reads tire tread and quick alignment check as you drive over it. Heard that was upwards of 60k as well. Stuff is crazy and out of control.

Same thing just happened to me on my truck I burnt the starter out because the alternator was seized cost me $300 for a starter and 200 for an alternator

Do you have an alignment system? In all of your videos, I don't recall ever seeing alignment heads on wheels.

Real question: I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2wd, left as stock setup, daily driver, and I'm going to replace the upper and lower control arms as sets, instead of doing just bushings or ball joints since it's 20 years old now, my question is there a benefit to using " Complete Arm w/ Ball Joint; Adjustable Front Upper; Plus or Minus 3.0 Degree Camber - Plus or Minus 3.0 Degree of Caster " in a stock setup with additional caster/camber adjustment??

Those alignment machines are Damm expensive. Like $ 14,000 upto 35,000 thousand ? I still remember the blue and yellow BEAR Alignment signs being everywhere back when I was a kid growing in mid 1980's....

Years ago in the early 1990's , I would get alignments at N.Y.C. taxi repair garages around midtown Manhattan on a 86 Caprice plus other R.w.d. cars of that era.. Mechanics used 2 cinderblocks with string attached & a tape measure. No shame here- it is what it was plus 30 year's later gives me a chuckle.....

I've drilled out a gm ignition before. Had to be careful not to hit anything i wasn't replacing. The thing was so destroyed i had no other way of removing it.

Tires suck. They are heavy, dirty and they smell bad. That being said, always make sure to service them correctly, because who wants a comeback? Not the tech or the customer. Do it right, please.

Wonder if their employees are working 7 days a week ,week after week. Trust me it does matter from parts to the cars and trucks ,quality suffers.

One thing we have tried is to have a applicant come in for one day, it might have to be a Saturday if they have a job. Tell them you will pay them cash at the end of the shift and see if they are a good fit. It is still not foolproof but it does help for the ones lying about there qualifications. It is difficult to find good people right now, everyone of my customers has the exact same complaint. Even if you are paying the top wages in the industry finding a highly skilled, reliable, hard working employee is next to impossible.

When you deal with bottom feeders, you catch carp. So enjoy your bony fat fish.

I will never understand this and I used to work in a retail setting installing tires at a warehouse club. Our training videos always said to remove the old weights and we had to take and pass a test after watching the videos BEFORE we would be allowed to work on cars by ourselves.

In my experience employers started this standoff by having no trust in their employees. Good workers also got caught in the net, and now also don't give a sh!t. In a world where all your co-workers are goof-offs, and you have suspicious employers applying nasty management techniques against you, absolutely no incentive, and no career progression, where's the motivation to bother? If my employer counts my keystrokes, I'm putting a paperweight on my space bar.
