As for the Iroquois PS13 engines, they were well into development, just not quick enough for the first 5 Avro Arrows and why RL25206 was designated the first of the next-generation Avro Arrow to work with one. The PS13 had a total of 5,000 ground hours which also included being attached to a B-47 American Bomber or designated by Canadair a CL-52, but also had thousands of hours testing components at the Nobel Facility near Parry Sound. No One knows for sure, but the Mk-2 Avro Arrows were a tad larger than its predecessors and could have possibly built that way to accommodate the added HP of Thrust that the Iroquois produced. Just so you know, there were supposed to be 3-PS13 Iroquois engines. Series 1 would have gone into RL25206 to RL25210, the Series-2 may have gone into RL25211 to at least RL25220 and the Series-3 Iroquois would have gone into RL25221 to RL25237. Each Series would have been stronger than the last, If anyone told you that the Series-1 PS13 Iroquois was double that of the Pratt & Whitney J75s (JT4A), then you were fed misinformation. The Series-1 was 3 to 4 thousand pounds of thrust stronger than the J75s.

Got to talk about a few things here. (Is this Stephen). Has to do with the following statement " Orenda never published thrust figures, only compressor speeds or Mass Air Flow. The Iroquois had a mass airflow of ~420 lbs. per sec., 170 lbs. per sec. higher than the nearest American engine, the J-75. Not twice the Air flow, but a lot. The Mark 2A which would have only been put into any Arrow after the first run on 120, would have had Variable geometry jet pipe nozzles that open and close like todays fighters. This was an Orenda plan not AVRO. To put things in perspective, even the Blackbird J-58 was only 300 lbs per sec.

The Avro Arrow was originally to have 2 aircraft built and tested. Then the request came for another 16 and then another 19 for a total of 37 Avro Arrows. The first set was RL25201 to RL25205 and was deemed over time to be Prototypes with the P&W J75, and she few pretty good. But they were also known as the Mk-1s or 1st Generation Avro Arrow. Now a lot of people believed that RL25206 was to fly, but she was actually designated for ground testing with the PS13s or Iroquois engines. It was RL25207 that was to take flight. It is hard to say whether RL25206 would have flown, but for the foreseeable future, RL25206 was grounded. Each Arrow would require 1,000 hours of testing before being released. But the first 5 had less than 100 hours in total, with RL25205 only getting in 45 minutes of flight time. RL25206 and up to at least RL25237 were designated as Mk-2s or 2nd Generation Avro Arrows, and would have had the PS13 Iroquois engines. But from what I read, to RL25215, would have been the MK-2s and RL25216 to RL25237 would have become the Mk-3s with very possibly the Series-2 or Series-3 Iroquois engines.

There were only two requested Arrows at first. What changed things was the Soviet Unions annual victory day parade where they showed off a few designs. This accelerated the RCAF's plans and five were ordered. As you stated 206 was for runway testing only, but like here siblings was to be refitted to complete the order of the first 37. After Arrow 21, the design was set for the first 120. The first 20 including 201-206 would be refitted. AVRO had plans for upgraded models that would include engines from Orenda. You can find these designs and other concepts on the this channel. Link below czcams.com/video/1FAFxRQFkH8/video.html

Other then trying to keep the story in proper sequence, I truly enjoyed the work you and your crew put into it. I and a buddy rode our peddle bikes from Scarborough to Malton to see what we could. We saw the B47 with the test Iroquois on the backside. Then we rode over to the fence were we could see the nose of the Arrow poking out of the factory door. That was the moment that made the ride across the top of the city worth every second. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for the work that you put into this great story.

Firstly I'd like to thank you for doing this. I'm not as old as you and those who were involved in this but I remember hearing about the Arrow for the first time in the 1970s when I was a teenager and I was hooked, and wondered what would have come to pass if it had not been destroyed in the biggest act of industrial vandalism in Canadian history. I watched each of the episodes with anticipation and wondered what it would be like if this concept was given to a screenwriter and film maker and turned into a treatment for a limited series. The Arrow still holds a place in the hearts and minds of many who are younger than those who were alive when Diefenbaker ordered it cancelled, and this is evident by all the Arrow social media groups and Arrow heads across the country. I would also like to direct you to the last image at the bottom of this blog post which was an imaginary concept for what a Gen. 4++++ or Gen. 5 Arrow might have looked like. theviewfromhere-fareedkhan.blogspot.com/2020/12/Sweden-can-teach-Canada-how-to-build-a-fighter-jet-for-its-own-air-defence-needs.html I would love to get your thoughts or that of any of the others who were involved in this video project.

Lol!!! F-35's shot down by MIG 31's??? Not with that early eighties technology lol!!! The TU-60 White Swan??? A high altitude non stealth bomber AGAIN utilizing the BEST technology 1985 has to offer lol!!! A couple of F-22 Raptors would've been sent up and shot that whole gaggle of mid-eighties airpower down BVR and they all would've died without ever knowing who, what or where their destruction came from lol!!! Debris scattered all over the Canadian arctic woulda made great souvenirs for local natives lol!!!

Hi Michael. The technology shown in these video's is exactly how to bring down an F-35 or F-22 over Canada. Lot's of space and time available to the the strike pack. Over Europe, it would still work, but it would be too cluttered to be of value. Much of this technology was developed in Ottawa at the National Research Council and then in a private company. The U.S. has also experimented with this technology. Would it be a easy as I show it, perhaps not, but it is very plausible. On the F-35, it is "stealthy" but not invisible. It can be seen by the Human eye and satellite cameras. The EMP horn and doppler radar system are mated together would be quite formidable....regards....Virtual

The US always does this. Bombardier finally finished a heavily tax payer funded passenger jet. Had sale contracts with I believe United airlines. Boeing got Trump to impose illegal aluminum tariffs on Canada. There was no legitimacy for Boeings claim of competition. They don't build a compatible air craft. Canadian was hurting due to the tariffs. Bombardier tried to salvage the sale and end the illegal aluminum tariffs imposed on Canada by teaming up with Airbus and guaranteeing addional production in the US instead of only 8n Canada. Terms were agreeded... force by the would superpower. Then the US government changed there minds again. End result... Airbus bought out Bombardier jetliner. Conclusion, US doesn't like competition and uses its economic power to buy out or destroy competition. Canada, again, out billions and aerospace industry set back. So much of free trade. Don't get me started on softwood lumber. The US government and industry doesn't want Canada making things. The just want our raw resources... Also don't get me started on Ontario's sale of discounted electricity and the discount sale of oil from Alberta. We should not have free trade with the US.

  • @Sherwoody

I always felt that what really hurt with the Arrow cancellation was the attempt to replace it with less than adequate weapons. The BOMARC was only effective with a nuke, and could not be deployed in Europe to meet our NATO commitments. The Voodoo was only effective with a nuclear tipped Genie. The Starfighters were deployed as a strike aircraft in Europe, a role that they weren’t really designed for, and F-5’s were not really useful anywhere. Had they even purchased the F-4’s, which were becoming available in the early 60’s, they would have at least had a decent multi role aircraft.

What innovations would’ve come after all this time had Avro become a player in the world scene? It's a good move for our NATO commitment. Not so much for Canadian air space, although as good a Super Hornet....regards....Virtual

With next gen fighters a new fly by light fibre optic system would be part of a new design. Japan has been already working on that for their next gen fighter.

They really were far beyond their time. And the overal size of the plane is now on par with modern jets for the same role.

Canada seems to be blessed with an abundance of natural resources, and very creative intelligent people, but at the same time, it appears to be cursed with an abundance very small minded, and stupid politicians, who struggle to see the bigger picture of things.

The Arrow seems to have been designed to have a lot of modular systems that could be added to the basic airframe. Because it was a large aircraft and there could have been modified versions that would have fulfilled the roles that were performed by the Voodoos, Starfighters, F5’s, and Bomarc’s. Jim Chamberlin an Arrow designer, did most of the design work for the Gemini spacecraft which also had modular systems that could be swapped out for various components. He also was responsible for most of the descent stage of the LM.

Great information. I knew about some of these future plans from books, but not all of them.
