When Teslas Hands Free Trunk Doesn’t Work
Let's do a proper test of Teslas new Hands Free Trunk.
My original video on the 2024.14.3 update was not just my first impression, but also my first attempt at making a video like this. I realised afterwards that I made several mistakes and I wanted to post this follow-up test to correct a few misunderstandings. I kept it pretty short so make sure to watch till the end to see an actual real-world scenario where the hands free trunk won't work.

They are flexible (Both the bins in the trunk and on the doors).
For the trunk, does it work on 2023 model 3?
No.
Is the Update i Europe? Denmark?
Not sure how Tesla rolls out their updates but would be curious when it arrives in Denmark/Europe. Can't imagine a reason why it would take so long.

Great simple video. Here's a quick summary of how this works! Hands free trunk uses 5g mm wave similar to how you locate air tags. The car can see where you phone is in 3d space probably as precise as an inch. The engineers probably set an activation zone about pocket height which could be why it didn't work while you were on the phone or while it was in your shirt pocket. It's also worth noting unless Tesla offers a retrofit, this is only possible on 2024 M3 and 2021+ S/X

From what I can see from other comments - it appears to be only on the refreshed M3 for now.

This is interesting so it’s a proximity thing, Tesla should mention it in the updated manual (if there is one), otherwise people would get mad when they’re talking on the phone while hands are occupied with groceries or what not.
The release notes only say to stand behind the trunk with a Phone Key unobstructed. While the actual manual of the car seems to have been updated to specify that you need the phone in your front pocket. I only stumbled on this when I was looking for a picture of the hands free trunk to add to the thumbnail!

Is the ‘no hands’ trunk opening feature for selected vehicles only? I don’t see it on my USA( Puerto Rico) 2023 MYP, don’t see the sentry notification update either.
So you didn't even test forward/reverse summon via your phone.....
Unfortunately, they're still disabled at the moment on the 2024 Model 3. "Tesla Vision vehicles that are not equipped with USS will be delivered with some features limited or inactive".
@@Kelvin273.15 is that because of HW4? I think I've seen vision only 3s do autopark and summon in CZcams.

Congrats! I haven't gotten anything new since but a few on my wishlist: A quality headrest and a solution for where to put the tissue box. My only regret was not getting familiar with how to use/save the dashcam footage or maybe getting a larger flash drive/SSD... Maybe more on that in a future video :'D

I've had my Tesla for almost 1 year and I have 0 faith in Tesla Vision. I hope they prove me wrong. Amazing car, just terrible implementation.
Already 6 months with the new M3 LR. Been having No issues at all with the cam vision system. I use it to help me park better and better understand my distance from objects and see my position in reference to the surroundings
Yeah - for me it comes down to trust. I was out today and the car kept warning me about the wheel stops when reverse parking in the carpark. Something my old vehicle never did before. However, in the last few months I can see it improving slowly with each new update. I'm sure we'll get there eventually and we can all take a nap while the car drives us to work!
@@Kelvin273.15 Yeah, it'll eventually get there. But idk if it'll be able to replace sensors. A camera can guesstimate how far something is but I know a sensor can know how far or close something is. Plus if something falls while I'm stationary in front of me the camera wouldn't detect it since we have no bumper camera. My previous car had amazing 360 sensors all around. Kinda miss them but I've gotten used to no sensors.
@@knightriderfan1 If they would just add a dang bumper camera I would trust it. I have good confidence in Tesla vision when it comes to the rear, but we seriously need proper frontal vision.. Would gladly pay for a retrofit. There's some aftermarket mods but obviously they don't sync into Vision and they look very not-OEM.

So I just got 2024.14.6. Pretty much everything you went through except for the hands free trunk so I wonder if it’s only the new M3?
I get the feeling it is for now. Hopefully they are just planning to release it a bit later like some of the other features. Did you get the adaptive high beams?
@@Kelvin273.15 no, didn’t get that either which I think that’s also part of 14.3. Tbh it’s annoying how they do their updates. I got 2024.14 then skipped to 14.5 and 14.6. I also have sensors in my car so I know they focus more on the models without

So the trunk doesn’t open when you actually are in a situation where your hands are holding something and want the trunk to open 🤷🏻♂️ I wonder how Tesla tests their software.

Australia. The white interior comes with choosing the white seats.
Have you figured out how to switch the gear in N ?
Good question - i'll have try tomorrow. Though I suppose there's always the buttons on the overhead console.
@@Kelvin273.15 indeed, that’s what I used yesterday, embarrassed with my car on the automatic car wash, 30 minutes after I received this update.
Hold down the N at the bottom of the gear shift on the screen.

Will the trunk automatically open if you are standing next to the car and some random person walks up to the trunk?
I tried it just now where I stood by the driver side door and had someone try to activate the trunk and it doesn't automatically open.

Ooh the wiper controls are so nice, ESPECIALLY with auto next to off instead of beyond 4. I ve wanted that swap for a while
It's raining everyday over here and just one less thing that forces me to take my eyes off the road.
For your case or bag in front of you test, you should try a bit more far from the car.
NO STALKS. Hell no. Handsfree trunk would be really unsuitable for where I live. It is gonna hit something.
Rear autotrunk isn't using cameras, it's using UWB tech, which is located in the bottom left part of the rear bumper
Handsfree trunk game changer. Bigger font on speedo great. I'm sure the crate issue can be worked out with future software

Thanks for watching! It was quite the dilemma on paper to pick between the two but my mind was set after a quick test drive. The car feels more refined and the build quality was definitely better imo. Of course that might change once the refreshed Y comes out but no regrets!
I saw audible at the beginning. So excited for that to be coming. I'm getting a model Y with HW4 soon. Do you know if this software (audible), would be on that? Or is this tied to the fancy update of the M3’s?
Looking at other videos from Model Y owners I suspect audible will definitely be available!
Great video quality! Maybe it's a bit early to ask, but how are those white seats holding up? Have you noticed any stains, like from jeans or other types of dirt? Planning to get a M3 Highland soon, but I can't decide on the interior color as I haven't found much information about the new white seats stain resistance
It's not been that long since I've had the seats but they've been good so far. I did apply the Gyeon Q2 Leathershield product to the seats though for added protection. Not a difficult process and it does make the seats feel a bit softer. The advisor was talking about the video showing someone pouring wine on the old white seats but I can't imagine that works anymore with the holes on the ventilated seats! Personally - I went with the colour that I liked the feel of more. You definitely get a lot of compliments afterwards when friends and family sit in the car for the first time!

Did a short drive today in the rain and had to keep adjusting between auto and the lowest setting! But at least it's easier now...
I have auto trunk on my car, a Volvo. Works every time and i can also close it hands free. This car is from 2017 (my 18). Tesla is kind of lagging behind more and more.
But… it’s a volvo…

Trunk does not use the camera, it uses UWB and you also need a smartphone that is UWB capable

UMC has gone from 8A to 10A now since the update
