You know, I deliberately didn't wear a dry top because I was thinking I'd keep my boat above water the whole time. Hubris...
This happened to me recently- it sucksssss. It always throws me off and annoys me
Yeah, it happens even when I'm trying to be careful because I know it's shallow. I figure it could always be worse: as long as the paddle doesn't break and I don't break anything... I'll take it.
What a long slog that was. Had to watch it start to finish. Looked pretty speedy with good memory running all those lines. Only a few blips. There was at least 8 seconds of water in that Axiom! Well done, looks exhausting. Next year, long boat.
RPM! Waaaay faster than an Axiom, ha! I'm impressed you watched it all. I figured I'm the only person who would do that, ha! I had much cleaner lines this year than last, but I was still mad that I messed up Charlie's because I made that mistake in most of my practice laps, and I saw it coming when my stroke was on the wrong side next to the rock. The other times I subbed out I chalk up to exhaustion. Next year I'll work on my cardio. Yeah, I thought I'd actually have seat time in a long boat this year, but it never happened. It's a good goal.

And what are a few recent gen fast, but versatile boats you'd consider adding to your quiver, $$ aside?
I was referring to my 8'4" Small Rewind being slower than my RPM. This year short boats are under 10', so you'd immediately think the Powerslides and Scorch Xs are going to win, but then a buddy of mine has an old-school Stunt 300, which has an RPM-style all-waterline, no-rocker profile, so I expect him to crush the competition this year. I have paddled none of those boats, so I can't say much about them.
Cool boat! What are some of your thoughts on it?
Well, it's an affordable option for someone who wants to try out slalom without committing thousands of dollars. I got it thinking the plastic would be tough, but it's actually kind of thin, so I won't be doing any more downriver in this boat, just attaining and paddling slalom gates. It is fast. It is not as stiff as a composite boat, which steals some spring from your strokes - but I'm not going to be competing, just trying to learn new skills and have fun.

More rocks than river. How low can we go again this summer? A 3rd mystery kayak bike trailer sighting. We’re starting a trend. You shoulda called me on that flat tire. I’ll have to remember to pack flex seal and a mini tire pump.
I need to start carrying my patch kit again. 5000 miles before the first flat wasn't too bad.
We also always collect plastic on the river. Aluminium and glass are ok to leave - they aren't harmful
I salute all efforts to clean up our waterways! Thank you! Aluminum cans have a plastic liner, and the aluminum itself is one of the few things I know to be valuable to recyclers. Broken glass can cut through a lot of waterproof shoes and sandals, and it's also recyclable. Although I suspect it is largely landfilled where I live.
@@paddlebikediveclimb Sometimes after floods we collect as many as 20 plastic bottles (most of the empty space in the boat) in one session on the Po. Glass bottles we just sink

That series of actions was so smooth, you'd think it had been rehearsed. Love the quick throw by Anton, who was next to a rock he could hold, as well as the paddle rescue by Thomas. This actually would. Pretty sure this would make a great instruction for any SWR class on the value of quick thinking and creative team work.
Thanks! I wish I were creative (and skilled) enough to choreograph something like that. I also appreciate how quickly Anton processed that he could give me the thing I wanted most in that moment with minimal cost to himself.
I’ve seen some pretty massive fish in the water locked canal sections. They’ve no way out except the end of a fisherman’s line or through a heron’s belly. Could also be a beaver. The water temps must be close to the boiling point in the canals.
It was almost certainly a catfish. I watched for a while because never was my first thought, but it settled into the water in the end. There were 2 guys fishing just down the canal...

That slot is a great race line at 2.3. not so much at 2.0.
Very busy day on the upper. The water temp musta felt refreshing anyway .
I'll be dreaming about that cool water all week with these 110+ heat indices.
Compared to the 90 degree baby pool temps in the Potomac, the Yough felt like the fountain of youth.

Curious - just to be sure: Was 2.73 at the start and 2.82 as recorded at the end because it was rising? Asking because I am trying to note my personal comfort range for Gritz. I really like paddling this line, but the level in your video was too low for my comfort.
Oh, shoot, thank you! I grabbed the wrong screenshot. 2.73 was this run; 2.82 was the day before (czcams.com/video/l8empeWlal4/video.html). I agree that 2.73 is a bit low for Gritz; the boof that makes it worthwhile is starting to get rocky instead of that clean wave, and you can see that I stopped in the eddy to figure out my way around the next rock.

Thanks! I am a little bit lucky with the timing: I had spent quite a few hours on flat water with just hand paddles last week. And I still had to think about it... which of course means there's a lot more practice in my future!
How’d it feel by comparison? I love watching the slalom boaters pirouette on that stern on upstream gates.
I am lacking a lot of technique. I was expecting to pirouette it for every turn, but I was unable to get the stern down at all.

One could even say that we've already been blessed with the knowledge of how to solve our problems, but we don't have the courage to take the difficult steps needed to do it. I suspect Jesus would be disappointed in us.

DRINKING WATER ADVISORY DC Water Issues Boil Water Advisory for All Customers in the District of Columbia, the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery and Reagan National Airport The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) issued a Boil Water Advisory today for all customers in the District of Columbia, as well as the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery and Reagan National Airport, due to a drop in water supply from the Washington Aqueduct. This is a precautionary notice to all customers to boil water that may be ingested due to water of unknown quality. Customer should not drink the water without boiling it first. This advisory will remain in place until follow-up testing confirms the water is safe to drink. What happened (Background) On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, DC Water was notified by the Army Corps of Engineers Washington Aqueduct that due to turbidity the Dalecarlia Water Treatment Plant reduced production and all water treatment operations were being conducted at the McMillan Treatment Plant. The current water treatment must be adjusted to meet current water demand for all our customers. To ensure there is enough water for firefighting activities, the Aqueduct resumed pumping water from the Dalecarlia Treatment Plant Wednesday evening. We anticipate the water could have increased turbidity and therefore providing this cautionary boil water advisory. Turbidity as a measure of the cloudiness of water as described by the EPA. It is used to indicate water quality and filtration effectiveness (such as whether disease-causing organisms are present). Turbidity has no health effects. However, turbidity can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Turbidity may indicate the presence of disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches. They may pose a greater health risk for infants, young children, the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. The symptoms above are not only caused by microbes in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. We have no information that the water was contaminated by this incident, but we issue this advisory as a precaution while we test the water. We will update you when the water supply has returned to normal production and meets water quality standards. Please share this information with all other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. Upside down below zero-channel is a helmet grinder. Ducks, turtles and litter crowding the eddies.
The lucky thing was that my boat, being hung up on a rock, just kind of gently dangled me in the pour over until I finally fell into it. It took some doing and some pushing off the bottom before I was able to get my paddle around to roll.
Mistakes were made on Beaver Left....
And dealt with so well, too.

I get Apple crash detection all the time while kayaking. Bump a rock or a boat, and my watch will ask if I have fallen. Fall while hiking, not so much.

Mostly borrowed or from home for the kayaks. One guy rented his kayak in Boise, and we rented the rafts, kitchen, groover, ash bin, etc from Blackadar.
