In that sobered state he'd send her away paying literally, painfully and honestly for that expensive lesson. Then have Samantha wipe away fake tears after exiting the room. So she gets what she's been monologuing about the whole movie. She lost a ton of agency coming to Africa, very limited options. But unlike him she doesn't learn anything. Also, her being excited with her cheque after the exit would then call into question that story about how Donaldtus died.
