In listening to a lot of preaching today, it's clear that it's possible to talk about the gospel or even about the work of God without actually getting around to preaching the gospel itself-preaching Jesus Christ for sinners. This can happen with any number of passages, but today Jon and Justin are going to have a conversation about a well-known text: the interchange between Jesus and Nicodemus...

@16-17 min. on the imputed righteousness of Jesus; I cannot agree that this righteousness is the obedience to the law. Adam did not ever have the law to break, in order to set up the need for Jesus to obey the law to account us righteous. The covenant of works sets up several false assumptions not grounded in the Bible.

On repentance, we have long been up against the Reformed concept of regeneration preceding faith and repentance. Every time that I hear this preached that regeneration is loaded with the responsibilities of everything that is to be accomplished in sanctification. And the statement is always made, "You cannot separate sanctification from justification.". The regeneration is always turned into the guillotine of lordship demands.

I feel that there is a duality to this because I noticed that in my testimony that i said God saved me out of my atheism. Maybe 99.9% God but 0.1% is due to faith? I recognise we have a corrupted nature so that would also mean we have a corrupted free will.

I think even in your example of the greatest commandment, guys like Doug Wilson would obviously agree with you. 100%. We cannot love God 100% because we are sinners saved by the grace of Christ alone, and we receive that through faith. However, we are still called to obey, and Christ's grace covers our failings. We confess when we fail, and the grace and forgiveness of Christ covers our failings. I struggle more with you guys because I wonder how you would approach someone who says they don't want to pray or read their Bible, but calls themselves a Christian. You then have two options: On the one hand, you would have to say that their lack of desire to pray and read the Bible is then evidence that they are not born again; on the other hand, your response would be that they should still read the Bible and pray (and the other things that the Bible commands us to do), regardless of what they "feel." In the former instance, you are then going to cause people to despair because they will constantly live a life where they question their salvation because they don't always feel compelled to do these commands of Scripture and thus, according to your logic, they are not truly born again. In the latter instance, which is how I believe you would counsel someone asking this question, you are therefore using the same logic as Doug Wilson; that is, we are commanded by God to do X, Y, and Z, so we ought to do those things. These things do not save us, but they do nourish our faith and, by doing the good works that He gave us the new birth to actually do (Eph. 2:10), this obedience is God's very fuel in our lives to cause us to persevere. We don't persevere or grow in personal righteousness by sitting on our hands; we all know that we have to actually obey regardless of how we feel. Furthermore, you guys should actually define "federal vision theology" (which you might have, but I don't listen to much of your guys' content), because FV is very much a "boogeyman" phrase that most people can't actually define. From my understanding and learning about it, the Federal Vision was the title of a conference back in 2002, and one of the aims of the conference was to advocate for using biblical language the way that the Bible uses it, rather than overcomplicating things or, dare I say, distorting Scripture through our own well-established systematic theology. This is why Doug can say that "continuing in God's kindness" (Rom. 11:22) is contingent on obedience; because it's exactly what the text says. If we say that "continuing in kindness" is about faith then again, per my previous example, we end up creating instability in the lives of Christians because they have nothing to look to that is concrete in regards to their standing before God. Our works are obviously a fruit of the new birth, and this is true, but in our actual lives this is an act of obedience; works are not passive, but active. If John the Baptist called his listeners to "bear fruit in keeping with repentance," and then proceeds to tell the crowds what to do (Lk. 3:8-9). Jesus says that we are known by our fruit (Mt. 12:33; Lk. 6:44). Paul says that the false teachers denied God by their works (Titus 1:6). This does not mean, in any case, that our works justify us before God, and clearly the emphasis is on how works are the fruit of the Christian life, but fruit is not accidental but intentional. I believe that much of the talk about works today is an overreaction to Roman Catholicism, and we need to address that and ask if we are the ones who are actually distorting what the Bible says.

Doesn't anyone get that Nicodemus had heard the Word and believed, therefore as Jesus was telling him, he(Nicodemus) was already born again. The new birds means exactly what it says baby Christians, infant believers. Everybody tries to rush the maturing process or impose something on people that doesn't need to be imposed.

  • @brucedavenport7016

Dreadful theology. I listen to these guys every so often to see if there is any light at the end of their tunnel. There is not. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. So, you have to believe, you have to repent, you have to be baptised and you have to receive the Holy Spirit. Those 4 things will save you. Walking daily in Christ will keep you saved! There is no other scriptural way, despite what these guys preach!

At 2:30 you say "this is something supernatural and not earthly". This runs contrary to the text. Jesus tell Nicodemus in verse 12 that what he's talking about IS EARTHLY. John 3:12 "If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?" Every Christian writer for ar least the first 5 centuries believed that baptism was a part of the new birth and involved personal choice. It was the Gnostics that believed what you are promoting. Here's a sampling and notice a universal agreement that "water" refers to water baptism in John 3:5. I will also relate the manner in which we dedicated ourselves to God when we had been made new through Christ.... They are brought by us where there is water, and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were regenerated ourselves. They there receive the washing with water in the name of God (the Father and Lord of the universe), of our Savior Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit. For Christ also said, "Unless you are born again, you will not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven." Justin Martyr, Vol. 1, pg. 183 Scripture says, "And he dipped himself seven times in the Jordan." It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized. Rather, this was a symbol for us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean from our old transgressions by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord. We are spiritually regenerated as newborn babes, just as the Lord has declared: "Unless a man is born again through water and the spirit. he will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven." Irenaeus, Vol.1, pg 574 Before a man bears the name of the Son of God, he is dead. But when he receives the seal, he lays aside his deadness and obtains life. The seal, then, is the water. They descend into the water dead, and they arise alive. Hermas Vol. 2, pg. 49 "Unless a man has been born again of water and the spirit, he will not enter into the Kingdom of the heavens." These words have tied faith to the necessity of baptism. Accordingly, all thereafter who became believers were baptized. So it was, too, that Paul, when he believed, was baptized. Tertullian, Vol. 3, pg. 676 Happy is our sacrament of water, in that, by washing away the sins of our early blindness, we are set free and admitted into eternal life... We, like little fishes, after the example of our ichthus, Jesus Christ, are born in water. Tertullian, Vol. 3, pg 669 It is the Holy Spirit who affects with water the second birth, as a certain seed of divine generation. It is a consecration of a heavenly birth and the pledge of a promised inheritance. Novation, Vol. 5, pg. 641 The blessed apostle sets forth and proves that baptism is that by which the old man dies and the new man is born, saying, "He saved us by the washing of regeneration." Cyprian, Vol. 5, pg. 388 And: " Unless a man has been baptized and born again, he cannot attain unto the Kingdom of God. In the gospel of according to John: "Unless a man is born again of water and a Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God." Cyprian, Vol. 5, pg. 542 Those who are born again by the bath receive....of His holiness and of His glory... the illuminated received the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, and they are appropriately born again to incorruption. Methodius, Vol. 6, pg. 320 Man is born mortal. He afterwards becomes immortal when he begins to live in conformity with the will of God. That is, he begins to follow righteousness.... And this takes place when man, purified in the heavenly bath, lays aside his infancy along with all the pollution of his past life. Then, having received an increase of divine vigor, he becomes a perfect and complete man. Lactantuis, Vol. 7, pg. 201 The things proceeding from the waters were blessed by God, that this also could be a sign of men being destined to receive repentance and remission of sins, through the water and bath of regeneration as many as come to the truth and are born again. Theophilus Vol. 2, pg. 101 Being baptized, we are illuminated. Illuminated, we become sons.... This work is variously called grace, illumination, perfection, and washing. Washing, by which we cleanse away our sins. Grace, by which the penalties accruing to transgressions are remitted. Illumination, by which that holy light of salvation is beheld, that is, by which we see God clearly. Clement of Alexandria, Vol. 2, og 215 By the bath of regeneration, they were born as newborn babes. Origen, Vol. 9, pg. 491 The second birth, which occurs in baptism, begets sons of God. Firmilian, Vol. 5, pg. 393 In this we also have the instruction delivered by Peter... And the faith of those present and their salvation by baptism. Pamphilus. Vol. 6, pg 166 If he was not baptized, neither are any of us baptized. Yet, if there is no baptism, neither will there be any remission of sins. Rather, every man will die in his own sins. Disputation of Archelaus and Manes Vol. 6, pg. 228 "He who out of contempt will not be baptized will be condemned as an unbeliever. He will be reproached as ungrateful and foolish. For the Lord says, "Unless a man is baptized of water and of the Spirit, he will by no means enter into the Kingdom of heaven." And again: "He who believes and is baptized will be saved. but he who does not believe will be condemned." Apostolic Constitutions, Vol. 7, pg. 457. At our birth, we were born without our own knowledge or choice, but by our parents coming together.... In order that we may not remain the children of necessity and of ignorance, but may become the children of choice and knowledge, and may obtain in the water the remission of sins formerly committed, there is pronounced over him who chooses to be born again, and has repented of his sins, the name of God the Father and the Lord of the universe.... And in the name of Jesus Christ.... And in the name of the Holy Spirit. Justin Marter, Vol. 1, pg, 183 John Chrysostom after quoting John 3:5, speaking on baptism he says, " What he declares is this: Thou sayest that it is impossible, I say that it is absolutely possible as to be necessary and that it is not even possible otherwise to be saved.... It is not possible," He saith. For one not born of water and the Spirit, to enter into the Kingdom of heaven"; because he wears the raiment of death, of cursing, of perdition, he hath not yet received his Lord's token, he is a stranger and an alien, he hath not the royal watchword. "Except", He saith, "a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of heaven.".... How then shall we be able to give account of the unseen generation by baptism, which is far more exalted than these, or to require arguments for that strange and marvelous birth?....In baptism are fulfilled the pledges of our covenant with God; burial and death, resurrection and life; and these take place all at once for when we immerse our heads in the water, the old man is buried as in a tomb below, and wholly sunk forever; then as we raise them again, the new man rises in its stead. If, therefore, we say that sins are not remitted there (among the Donatists), How is he regenerate who is baptized among them? And what is regeneration in baptism, except the being renovated from the corruption of the old man? And how can he be so renovated whose past sins are not remitted? But if he be not regenerate, neither does he put on Christ; from which it seems to follow that he ought to be baptized again. For the apostle says, "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ;" and if he has not so put on Christ, neither should he be considered to have been baptized in Christ. Further, since we say that he has been baptized in Christ, we confess that he has put on Christ; and if we confess this, we confess that he is regenerate." Augustine Against the Donatists But they think within themselves that they show very great subtlety in asking whether the baptism of Christ in the party of Donatus makes men sons or not; So that, if we allow that it does make them sons, they may assert that theirs is the church, the mother which could give birth to the sons in the baptism of Christ; And since the church must be one, they may allege that ours is no church. But but if we say that it does not make men sons, "Why then," say they (the Donatists), "Do you not cause those who pass from us to you to be born again in baptism, after they have been baptized with us, if they are not thereby born as yet?" Augustine quotes the Donatists

If John said this, I agree with him. None of ELOHIM'S Truly Salvaged Saints is going to walk in disobedience to THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. You can't just skim over and sammarily dismiss what THE HOLY SPIRIT HAD James to write. It's by our works we will be known. See here: John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. Matthew 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: Matthew 3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Matthew 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Matthew 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Matthew 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Then of course: James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: James 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Why is there NO SCRIPTURE relayed here amongst all these opinions? It's there. EL ELYON HAS PLACED IT IN THERE. THE LORD GOD... EVEN THE ONLY SOVEREIGN, OMNIPOTENT, OMNISCIENT, OMNIPRESENT, AUTOCRATIC DESPOT AND POTENTATE CONTINUE TO DIRECT ALL Those HE HAS CHOSEN, INTO HIS KINGDOM, Amen. Selah.

[14] I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, As much as in all riches. [22] Take away from me reproach and contempt; For I have kept thy testimonies. [24] Thy testimonies also are my delight Andmy counsellors. [31] I cleave unto thy testimonies: O Jehovah, put me not to shame. [36] Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, And not to covetousness. [45] And I shall walk at liberty; For I have sought thy precepts. [46] I will also speak of thy testimonies before kings, And shall not be put to shame. [59] I thought on my ways, And turned my feet unto thy testimonies. [79] Let those that fear thee turn unto me; And they shall know thy testimonies. [88] Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; So shall I observe the testimony of thy mouth. [95] The wicked have waited for me, to destroy me; But I will consider thy testimonies. [99] I have more understanding than all my teachers; For thy testimonies are my meditation, [111] Thy testimonies have I taken as a heritage for ever; For they are the rejoicing of my heart. [119] Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: Therefore I love thy testimonies. [125] I am thy servant; give me understanding, That I may know thy testimonies. [129] Thy testimonies are wonderful; Therefore doth my soul keep them. [138] Thou hast commanded thy testimonies in righteousness And very faithfulness. [144] Thy testimonies are righteous for ever: Give me understanding, and I shall live. [146] I have called unto thee; save me, And I shall observe thy testimonies. [151] Thou art nigh, O Jehovah; And all thy commandments are truth. [152] Of old have I known from thy testimonies, That thou hast founded them for ever. [157] Many are my persecutors and mine adversaries; Yet have I not swerved from thy testimonies. [167] My soul hath observed thy testimonies; And I love them exceedingly. [168] I have observed thy precepts and thy testimonies; For all my ways are before thee. Deuteronomy 6:4,6,13,16-18,24-25 ASV Hear, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah: [6] And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart; [13] Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God; and him shalt thou serve, and shalt swear by his name. [16] Ye shall not tempt Jehovah your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. [17] Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of Jehovah your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. [18] And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of Jehovah; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which Jehovah sware unto thy fathers, [24] And Jehovah commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Jehovah our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as at this day. [25] And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before Jehovah our God, as he hath commanded us. 2 Chronicles 23:11 ASV Then they brought out the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony, and made him king: and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they said, Long live the king. Psalm 132:11-12 ASV Jehovah hath sworn unto David in truth; He will not turn from it: Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne. [12] If thy children will keep my covenant And my testimony that I shall teach them, Their children also shall sit upon thy throne for evermore. 1 Kings 2:1-3 ASV Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying, [2] I am going the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and show thyself a man; [3] and keep the charge of Jehovah thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his ordinances, and his testimonies, according to that which is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself; 2 Kings 23:3 AMP The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD and to keep His commandments, His testimonies, and His statutes with all his heart and soul, to confirm the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant. 2 Chronicles 34:31-32 AMP Then the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD-to walk after (obey) the LORD, and to keep His commandments, His testimonies, and His statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant written in this book. [32] Further, he made all who were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin stand [with him, in confirmation of it]. So the inhabitants of Jerusalem acted in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

Wouldn't it be true that if you're being consistent then you would need to say that those who profess a synergistic gospel are not saved and believe in a false gospel. Semi-Pelagians say they believe in grace alone but when asked to explain what they mean they say that the sinner, before being saved, while dead in their sins, makes a righteous decision with is coupled with the work of God and then the sinner is saved/justified. Same thing with those who reject perseverance of the saints. They teach that our works keep us saved. Do you believe the people in those two categories are false Christians or that there is a "happy inconsistency"? God bless you brothers!

Is the new birth, regeneration and conversion all the same thing? If to seek God you must be born again or regeneration must have occurred or you wouldn’t have the desire to seek. So now in hearing the Good News, One of the means of Grace, we hear and believe by faith received in the new birth and exercised at the hearing of the Gospel. The demands of the Gospel should be understood as the Golden Chain of salvation, Romans 8:29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. What is required is met in and by Christ alone, all the demands are fulfilled in Christ but are seen working through faith in the Gospel. Like you guys say, Done! We are the Harold’s of good news, indeed, even as we are the recipients working out our salvation in the telling of the old, old Story of Jesus and His Love.

Pietism tends to make people weary and afraid and hopeless. The reformed gospel tends to make people casual, unaware of the danger that still exists, and unresponsive to the teaching of Jesus. The biblical gospel brings us into a relationship with God in which we both love him and take him as serious as a heart attack. We know both the love of God and the fear of God. We have both the comfort of the Spirit and also great sobriety and urgency in light of the coming judgment.

Please tell me how your gospel is anything other than a works based pietism? Do you even hear yourself? The judgement for Christians is not life and death. We are clothed in the righteousness of Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15. Read it and understand what the judgement for the Christian is.

@@medic4christ777 works based salvation would say that we must earn our way to God on our own steam. Reformed, grace alone salvation says that God does it all and we contribute nothing. Biblical salvation is not either. It teaches that we are saved through a relationship with Jesus. He makes it possible. He initiates through his life, death, and resurrection. But we must respond. None of us deserves to have this saving relationship. At the same time, we must take him seriously and walk in obedience to him or we will lose that saving connection to him. We cannot expect to ignore a Kings commands and remain in his kingdom and in good standing with him. God is merciful to all who turn to Jesus in faith (embrace his authority and follow him). And he will continue to be merciful to them as long as they continue to walk with his Son. So biblical salvation is based on God's grace in the sense that if he were not gracious, none of us would have a chance. But God also requires that we RESPOND in a certain way. 1 Cor 3 is not about the judgment of Christians' personal lives, but is about the judgment of the work they did to build the church, make disciples, etc. Paul says that they, the Corinthians, are the field, and he and Apollo were the ones doing "the work." This is the context in which he goes on to discuss the judgment. If the disciples Paul made, in this case the Corinthians, do not make it, if they "burn up", then the worker himself, in this case Paul, will still be saved. It is not talking about the obedience or lack thereof of the individual doing the work, but the fruit their ministry bore in the lives of others. If that fruit does not endure, that person who disciples those people will still be saved if THEY lived a godly life. But when Paul speaks of the judgment in terms of his own personal life being evaluated, he makes it very clear that there is a conditional nature to it. He says that he disciplines himself so that he will not be disqualified after preaching to others (Please read 1 Cor 9:24 - 10:14 for full context). He tells Felix in his defense that he strives to keep his own conscience clear before God and man in light of the coming resurrection of the righteous and wicked. He scares Felix later on when he speaks to him and Drusilla of "faith in Jesus." It says he talked to Felix about righteousness and self control and the coming judgment, and Felix becomes afraid and no longer wants to talk. Think about that carefully... Paul tells us in Romans 2 just what Jesus told us about the judgment - that God will give to each according to what they did, and that those who do good will be saved while those who do evil will be under wrath. Why would Paul warn the churches so seriously and so often if he thought they were all out of danger in the sense that they'd be saved no matter what?

@@thomasalbinholmes2538 You keep contradicting yourself. You don’t see that the theology you are preaching is exactly the same as the first example you give. You ARE telling people they need to EARN salvation. By telling people they must obey, keep rules and regulations, live a lifetime of obedience to certain decrees, etc, and if they do a good enough job by the end of their life they will be saved; that is the exact same thing as EARNING salvation. You keep trying to create a division between what you teach and works salvation. But they are exactly the same. It’s actually rather funny watching you fall all over yourself trying to justify your method as anything but works salvation. Your interpretation is also wrong. The passage says “EACH MAN” should be careful how he builds on the foundation of Christ, and their work will be judged. Why would the passage say they will “still be saved, but as through fire”, if it’s simply referring to sharing the gospel and building the church? Why would being saved even be mentioned, if he was referring to building up the church? He was interjecting what he started the chapter discussing (sinful behavior) into the end of the passage. The whole point of 1 Corinthians 3 is a rebuke of SINFUL BEHAVIOR.

@@thomasalbinholmes2538 You are correct that reformed grace alone salvation says that God does it all and that we contribute nothing. I would add however that the belief in the monergistic work of God in salvation then enables us to respond with Everything. Therefore a casual or cavalier attitude is the antithesis of a sound reformed view.

@@medic4christ777 to clarify, we all need God's grace. If he were not willing to forgive our past sins and then help us learn a new way of life, if he were not patient, we'd all be with out hope. But because he Is gracious, he is willing to overlook the sins of those who repent and believe in Jesus. At that point they are forgiven for all their past sins and empowered through the Spirit for a new life. This is the beginning of their saving relationship with Jesus. This is when they "get on the Vine." They have become a new branch, and are now connected to Jesus in a saving way. God will be gracious to them from that point on if they walk in obedience. As Jesus says, "IF you keep my commandments, you will REMAIN in my love." How could he be more clear? Suppose a boss catches an employee stealing from the company. What doew that employee deserve? They deserve to be fired without any discussion. But suppose the boss decides to be GRACIOUS. He says, "Listen, I know you've had a rough life and that you've learned all kinds of wrong ways of thinking. And I believe you can change. If you'd be willing to take this seriously and let me mentor you, I'd be willing to let this go. Deal?" Now you cannot deny that this would be a gracious thing for an employer to do for someone. That employee's job would be "saved by grace". Yet it seems that you think there would be no grace there since there is a condition involved. A wife forgives her husband for cheating on her repeatedly. But she also says, "I won't move out as long as you cut all ties with that woman. But if you keep talking to her, I don't know if I can handle that." Again, that is a gracious thing for her to do. She could have just moved out. But there's a condition there isn't there. Does that mean she isn't being forgiving and merciful? Please see the distinction between works based salvation and biblical salvation. One involves no grace. We are cut off without any way forward as soon as we make a mistake. But on biblical salvation, God mercifully and graciously forgives us when we turn to Jesus. But those who have done so are then warned over, and over, and over again throughout the New Testament. We do not earn salvation by our obedience because God will never be obligated to give it to us. But he will GRACIOUSLY give it to us IF WE turn to Jesus, and he will continue to be gracious to us and bear with us as we continue to grow and change IF WE keep walking with Jesus. God could at any point, cut us all off as soon as we make the slightest mistake, and he would be doing us no wrong since we all deserve his wrath anyway. But in his kindness he continues to be gracious to those who walk with him in humility and obedience. But those who become lukewarm, or who become greedy, or who become proud, or who disobey his commands, and who do not repent, will eventually be cut off the Vine. But if a Christian does those things and repents, God is even then willing to be gracious and forgive and keep helping them to move forward. You have been taught an extreme form of grace which has made the real biblical teaching of grace sound bad in comparison. You and I learned that God forgives and saves unconditionally. And so when you see someone warning people as Paul did and using conditional language to describe salvation as he did, it sounds like bad news and works salvation to you. But in reality it is just what the Bible says.
