The road actually winds down the mountain not far from where the truck ended up. So actually it was a short cut. And saved a bit in fuel.

I'm not sure , but from the way I see it . I would have hugged the cliff . There was no reason to stay on the right side of the road . I also would have used shorter tow strap . In Switzerland the post office bus always , (by law) hugged the cliff side on mountain roads . If the road was to narrow for 2 vehicles ,the bus never ever backed up . Not sure why they bothered putting up the guardrail .
