Bumped into Pepe on the beach in Big bay.. haven't seen him for a few years. Question is could he still forward after having TWINS?? (check his forward loop video on the channel) I probably should have cut this short.. but I guess you can just turn it off if it's not interesting! :)
Ride/Talk Session - Windsurfing Meia Praia Beach, Lagos, Portugal

Back to Portugal.. a Massive 5 meter swell forecasted... but didn't come in as expected. Meia Praia is on the South Coast so it has to wrap around. it also needs a low tide so I was a bit early. Very gusty, Fat wave.. trust me it can be super fun...but looks like I'll have to go back on a good day.

I have mixed feeling about the (over)use of metrics in recreational sport. Exactly because it delivers 'hard' data in an ocean of subjective impressions, it is quite tempting to pay a lot of attention to them, to the point that it is the measured speed/distance/hard rate / whatever that determines whether you feel you are having a good session. It is a game of ever smaller returns, because we tend to compare todays results to the 'best ever' values of previous sessions or to values of other people. I went down that rabbit hole in cycling when I was young, contantly monitoring speed, distance, heart rate, cadence etc. This lead me to ignoring the most important metric: "feel". In the end, unless you are a (semi)professional competitor, 'feel'is the omly metric that matters. I would measure speed very sparingly, like a few times a year only. Or at least be conscious of the relative (un)importance of the measured data and the effect it has on your mood.
I have a VMax 6.0, my record is 16.5kts on Magic Ride 129l 😂 Maybe I should start using the footstraps? On choppy Baltic sea I have not much progress here... Even on my Windsurfer LT I had almost same speed.
Hi Ben, i have a question about stance... what i see you do and not only in this video, is you turn in your front foot with your toes up. I have seen it with other good riders.. i am just wondering why you guys do that? It appears to me that it would result in max pressure on the back foot. Or do you still pressure but just help pressuring the rails with your front foot. Or maybe i am seeying wrong 🙂, but to me it is very apperent at around 12:43, almost like you turn your hip into it.
Hi Ben which watch are you useing ?, thank you for the content.
Where is this slice of windsurfing paradise? 😮 Any Polar gps watch compatibility possible in future with Waterspeed app? Awesome videos! I think I could watch you gybe all day long, so smooth!
Bring it to android or even better, create a garmin companion app and I'm in.
Hi, Ben, The Mauritian team has responded to your challenge. Fabrice LECLEZIO, Christopher TYACK, Regis LESIEUR positions 2, 7 and 3. We don't have a speed spot, but we're passionate about speed and the sailing conditions are exceptional. Tomorrow is our last windy day until the 9th, and we'll be trying to get back ahead with our slalom gear!!!! Thanks for your enthusiasm and this great challenge. Come and join us! any time, you'll be warmly welcomed. Ask Antoine what he thought of his stay here earlier this year.
Yes boys! 💪💪... it got pretty windy today for an hour!! ... and Tuesday here looks proper windy... so looking forward to you boys throwing down the target! Good luck tomorrow! The problem here is it's a very short run... so I'm bouncing off the rocks when I push the run late!! haha ...and yes.. Mauritius is on my bucket list! So cheers.. one day!
oh and if you get some footage.. please send it over. As I'll make a little video at the end of the challenge!
@@Ben-Proffitt I've sent you an email. Can you confirm that you have received the video from Mauritius?
he ben what is a nice place for an intermediate surfer
Do you press down with your front foot wen going for the back strap? It seem so effortless when you do it....
I'll be honest it's not a conscious thing.. but I went out yesterday and thought about what you asked. I yes I do a little bit.. weight through the boom and mast foot... and switch to the front foot slightly
Ben. A great idea, I like the varied nature of the challenges, ie not just 5 sec top speed (which I'll never get close to). My only issue is my GPS watch, I'm using a Coros which is good (runs 10 minutes slow weirdly!) and the fact that the waterspeed app links to Apple and Garmin through Garmin connect from what I can tell. I've asked the waterspeed people about Coros compatibility and they say "soon". So 2 questions. 1. Do you know when "soon" might be? 2. What is your advice on Garmin/Apple Watches for this application? Stuart
Great stuff Ben - try putting the camera lower on the mast. It gives you less of a fish-eye effect 😁
You with your flat water………. Come sail LI NY…chop, boat wakes, seagrass….. thats where real men speedsail 🤣
😂😂
I have a Garmin Forerunner 965 but I miss the waterspeed app for this… There is just a windsurfing app and I will try it. Most windsurfers are using the Corros or the Apple Watch Ultra.
Well.. the water speed app just syncs with the garmin app. But the Apple Watch has a Waterspeed app I think. Mine just syncs with the garmin app
Using a no-cam sail, this is superb result!
Cool video!
Sagres Martinhal❤❤❤❤
Hi Ben, with regards to the fins and the just add a bit. You can be more specific a little like fanatic do and half the board width to get your high wind size fin then add 2cm to get your medium wind for the board and add another 2cm for your light wind fon size. I do this all the time with my starboard Isonics and it works a treat when it comes to racing. Just food for thought and not completely official 🤙
Sounds good

Hi Ben, great video! makes me jealous.... just a thought on PWA slalom X . Fantastic drone footage, amazing commentary, I loved the racing ... but no sound?, imagine formula 1 with no sound of the cars, or a film with no sound. Is there a way of getting some sound into the racing? Your board at speed sounds great! just a thought
Not easy to do..
I think they will just be yelling and swearing the whole time anyway. Would be cool though.
Saw you there yesterday, me trying to wingfoil in 25+ knts gusts. Impressive speed!
Awesome stuff! I’ll be out giving it a go tomorrow!
What app are you using on your Garmin Fenix (is it the 6?) to track sessions @ben? It doesn’t seem to come with a default Garmin windsurf app even though it has pickleball whatever the flip that is.
It’s the 7 and has a windsurf app on it!
I’m using a Fenix 6X and use the Sail Racer Lite app, which gives me all the data I need.
On the fenix 5 plus I use the boating activity, which is in knots (even if strava then thinks I’ve been rowing….)
I’m using the windsurfing application by vivsurfer, I feel a bit robbed that there’s no Garmin windsurfing app when they have literally done everything else like 5 different types of running or cycling and project eps or pickleball or whatever.
@@GrahamSnowdon the Waterspeed app just syncs with the Garmin connect app.
I have a quiver of Vmax sails... looks like I need some faster boards!
Oh Yeah .... Great idea ... Whent on this beach this summer its a nice piece of paradise Vingt Sang ;)

@@alexvantee6938 haha.. you obviously didn’t get to that bit in the video. But yeah.. they are working on it 👀
Heloouu 😂 nice runs Ben👌
Nice video again Ben! I am still trying to get to 60km/h! Have only managed to get 58 a few times.. But there is also good news: I got my partner addicted to windsurfing this summer!
"I got my partner addicted to windsurfing this summer!' Nice.. Now you get more sessions!! ' I am still trying to get to 60km/h! Have only managed to get 58 a few times'. A very flat location makes a huge difference... and the right angle. Then a good bit of downhaul and a good fin with a quick board! :)

I love challenges like that. I hope i can take part next year. One more reason to get a GPS watch.
you can do it if you stick you iPhone in a waterproof case I think :)
@@Ben-Proffitt great idea. Where do people put their phone while surfing ? 😅

What you need is to dig up some old school race gear. So many old timers on Facebook insisting 90s era boards are faster cos they are narrower. This myth needs putting to bed.
hello, excuse me but how do we register! awesome video!
Can't afford the chiropractor.
Watching all these video's with you on the VMAX I decided to buy one as well. Already had a 7.0 Avanti Powerride, so now I bought the 2023 VMAX 6.0 for higher winds. Can't wait to try it!
Awesome.. you won't be disappointed.. it's a GREAT Sail!! Let me know how you get on.. 💪💪
I was hoping you actually unboxed it. I got one delivered from Amazon, after cutting all the tape... i can't find a way to open it without destroying the box. Lol
Ben, I've started doing videos (Wills Aston) on wing foiling, fishing, could you please tell me the microphone set you use whe wind surfing ? Thanks Wills
This video is so entartaining from the beginning to the end. And Ben thank you for the commentary of the last windsurf event at the Canary islands
Very nice. But, at 97 kgs this board would be my high wind sinker 🙂 I really like the idea of wave boards with enough reserve volume for us ordinary guys sailing in far from ideal conditions. Have fun Per
100% ! Agree
Good points. If you take it to the extreme we should all sail one designs like iqFoil, RSX, Kona, or Windsurfer LT.
gotta love that witchcraft board😍 what a beauty.
Show off....😅
In June I went to Sagres to show my girl friend the Ben spot... You are making this place famous
haha... how was it? 😁
@@Ben-Proffitt that was very nice but short (2 days). Met very friendly wingfoiler here, could have become friend, sometime you have direct connection with people, that was the case here
Philosophy on the water, love it. And this is how the Wave Rally World Championships was born.
I always loved speed on surfboards. Had some kind of safe feeling on them. On Wingfoils I dont like it - yet. When a bigger gust kicks in I accelerate massively + the high on the foil with around 85 cm I dont feel good.
I love the fin sound 🤤
Hi. Cant find what car rental company you recommended for capetown.. know you had one you use in some videos somewhere...
Actually Ben, you comments of just going at 30knots is proving the point. You have reached 50 at some point in your life. For many of us who have never reached 30 knots, going to say 26 if extremely rewarding.
Totally right Ben. The pleasure/fun level is what really matters and it's not directly proportional to the absolute speed. Conditions matter too. For example, going maybe 20knt on a glassy lake when catching the perfect gust is one of the most pleasurable experience windsurfing (the acceleration to get there too). Of course, the introvert is happy like that while an extrovert may need to race someone to feel "the speed" :)
When it feels fast, it isn't fast. :D
I am 55 and I got so excited from the moment I start to rig my gear on windy days. Bump and jump my motto!
