No, it wasn't so much that Europe pulled ahead, it was the case of China stagnating China had been at the forefront of firearms development during the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties For context, the Portuguese actually imported cannons from the Ming because they were superior to what Europe had Things changed during the Qing though, the dynasty that succeeded the Ming The Qing, being foreigners, had a policy of supressing the development of technology and the spread of knowledge in China, in order to keep the population backwards and thus easier to control It was during this period that Europe pulled ahead in firearms development

I think he simply wanted it all. He wanted the skeeze and gangs from the actual book, giving the 1830's and 1840's. He wanted to showcase the 1863 draft riots. So, he just shoved them together into one film and kept the feel the same throughout and called it a day.

Warfare creates a need for innovation, wars of religion, ethnic conflict, and highly martial cultures all created the circumstances for near constant large scale warfare this lead to accelerated military innovation.

Jones is speaking about Rodimtsev’s first units going over on the 14th. It depends on which sources you believe for that day. Jones uses primary sources like staff officer Anatoly Mereshko and others to allege that the jump time was moved forward to 5 PM since the situation on the Western bank of the Volga was more dire than anyone wanted to admit. Mereshko stated that as Mamayev Kurgan was lost and troops were watching heavy artillery being shipped East that waiting for dusk was not feasible. Anatoly Kozlov added to this. You are correct that Mereshko adds that every boat with a gun fired what it could to create a smokescreen and every available plane was scrambled. Vasili Grossman also noted that they didn’t wait until night. Grossman reported a note from Rodimtsev that stated it started at 1700 hours. Glantz takes Chuikov’s official report of 2000 hours at face value.

In North Carolina during the 18th and 19th century being called a tar heel was a derogatory expressing of poor white people. The North Carolina Confederate infantryman would change that. Poor white tar heels made good soldiers. After the War for Southern Independence the people of North Carolina called themselves Tar Heels as an expression of pride. First at Bethel, Farthert to the Front at Gettysburg and Last at Appomattox.

Unfortunately for this revisionist apologetic, Aleksander Solzhenitsyn wrote of the blocking detachments 50 years ago in The Gulag Archipelago. The Soviets even executed their liberated POWs. Ummm it’s not a myth that human waves would be used for charges by the Soviets in WW2. You’re wrong and looking for imperfections that are even more false than this films depiction. And it’s disrespectful to the actual 100s of thousands who died like that… Obviously no human is going to run straight into a machine gun. It’s a depiction dude. But they did charge like that. You’re wrong. Look at the battle of Berlin. That’s literally all they did because they wanted to get the War over by May 1st, which was a big Soviet holiday celebrating workers. You analyze one scene because you don’t like commanders shooting down their own people but in the process get more wrong than you correct. And again, it’s literally just a visualization because they did indeed execute cowards. It’s easy to learn what really happened if you just look it up. Stop doing what you’re doing this is the worst type of historical analysis.

They had weapons, they had combined arms, and in reality, they were successful during the September crisis. Even at the Battle for Berlin, there is a big difference between commanders racing each other for politics gain but still using combined arms and modern tactics and machinery versus a Zerg rush with just infantry who share rifles and have more men mowed down by blocking detachments than Germans.

Come to think of it, there is one cultural consideration when asking this question: Europe as a whole had a long tradition of martial culture that went back to the Roman era. I realize that some of the Chinese dynasties--I think mostly those of foreign origin or those that reigned or tried to reign during long periods of division--were more militaristic than others and I'm not knocking you're analysis of geographic influence--see my comment from three years ago--but Europe, especially Western Europe, was basically in a state of constant war from the time the Western Roman Empire began to break apart until the end of World War 2. Feudalism, inter-tribal warfare, Vikings, Huns, other barbarians, crusades, the rise of nation-states, and colonialism all contributed to the need for soldiers, weapons, and the means to support both. I'm kind of shooting in the dark here, but it feels to me like the discovery and innovation of a weapon that allows for war on a grander scale than ever before is kind of a no-brainer for a continent of people for whom war has played a huge part in their culture and history. Obviously this is a very simple inference and it overlooks a lot of things, but when you consider the fact that western Europe underwent a centuries-long feudal era while China's first emperor outlawed all forms of nobility in favor of an imperial bureaucracy, there's probably something to be said for a martial culture being the one to adopt gunpowder wholesale.
