Our plans have changed, leaving Brazil on Saturday, June 15, 2024, because we are being kicked-out of the country.
Well damn! Where are you going next?
@@SVSaltyAbandon Headed to the Caribbean, being a 30 -40 day sail. Do you have an email?
will not be sent until mid-July. Our next country may be 2600nm away in the Caribbean.
It's on my bucket list one day soon I hope
That should be farely easy to accomplish. Where do you live?
I've been looking into solo sailing and was wondering how many people actually have encounters with pirates. Did yall not have guns on board?
Yes, indeed! I only go places where it's legal for me to do so.
I encourage you to solo sail. 95% of my sailing is solo and I love it.
@SVSaltyAbandon thanks for the response. Never been sailing before, always had an internal need for the water. Want to leisurely circumnav the globe. Working paycheck to paycheck, gonna have to do it on a very serious budget and alot of planning.
@@sendit7777 It can be done! I recommend taking ASA 101, 103, and 104.
Great video!
Trying to reach you!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Capt Vinnie looks cool. Thanks for sharing. Hope to cross paths with you both one day! 💙⚓️
Hey Salty, we sail an IP 35 and are very happy with how it sails and handles heavy weather. I know you said a 320 now. I was curious how you would rate the sailing ability of the 27, and if you think it would be suitable for extended off shore crossings and heavier winds and waves. Thanks!
Hey, Chasing Freedom! Love that name, btw. The IP27 was plenty of room for two but of course the IP320 is much more comfortable for two people, as I'm sure the IP35 is. And the IP320 handles the waves more comfortably for all on board than the IP27. But the IP27 is a tough bluewater boat. It's definitely ready to cross an Ocean!
@@SVSaltyAbandon thank you for that insight. That is what I was wondering. Agreed that the larger boats will always be more comfortable but good to know that it can be done on these smaller ones. I’ve always been fascinated by people crossing on small sub 30 foot boats but have not seen anyone really do it on an IP 27 that I am aware of.
Must have been 50 years ago
I think he said 2020!
Capt Snapp and his wife Melissa are amazing people. Ty for sharing your boat and experience with your IP 349! ⚓️💙
Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!
What do you think of the chainplate repair on your IP 27 would you recommend that to other IP owners?
As fate would have it, the Yacht Rigger is the one that did the external reinforcements to the chainplates on my IP27 back in 2017. At that time, they had some guys come over from the Island Packet factory who were moonlighting installing external chainplates on Island Packets. Stephen with Yacht Rigger said he let them do the bracing because those guys knew exactly where to install hardware to hook in with the internal pieces of the chainplates. The local rigger here in Pensacola (Zern Rigging) also believes it to be safe and sound. Some purists say it's not ideal but there is a big difference in price between doing the external bracing and tearing the interior apart, cutting the fiberglass, taking out the old chainplates and installing the new, reglassing, and putting the interior of the boat back together. So, I guess it depends on budget! I've never heard any negatives stories from people that have chosen to do the external bracing. I hope that answers your question!
Great video! We used celestial during our 1983 circumnavigation.
Thank you! Wow, that's impressive! Can't wait to have u on the podcast....I want to hear about it!
Great job!
Can we set a date for you to be on the podcast? As of now, I have any Thurs starting May 8th and beyond (subject to change). Let's get it on the calendar. The people want to hear your adventures!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dont do it.
Mashallah beautiful sharing 😍👌 55:24 🎁💐❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗👍
Thanks for visiting
Wow...
Hey there! We are just now watching. We had technical difficulties yesterday. Great podcast.
Thanks for watching!
The boat in the intro is an East-African Dhow, using the Portuguese lateen rig, primarily sailed on the coasts of Kenya and Tanzania.
Why not rebuild your own Head?
It's a good point. I wish I could.
Great information, including anchorages.
Thank you, Rauf! Can I interview you and your wife? Would love to interview you while you are in Brazil!
@@SVSaltyAbandon We are sailing to a more remote anchorage on April 6th (Baia Do Aratu, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, S12.47, W38.27), perhaps we can plan something once we are settled, working on publishing Jeannette's second book on Amazon. We will be there for one month.
@@rainfinger Ok, let's do it!
Are u ready to set a date?
@SVSaltyAbandon Not yet, movingvthe boat this week.
I'm not sure why you'd stop when making this "crossing", nor am I sure why anyone would stop in Everglades City - unless you like mosquitos or fried alligator. The water is too shallow, when the wind picks up just a little the waves are choppy, not at all like in deeper water. Makes more sense to head to Naples and stay out in blue water.
Thank you for the feedback. I can't speak for John but I can say for myself....I went past that whole area for many years (Marco to Marathon, Marco to Key West, Captiva to Key West, etc). I changed it up last year to make the trips shorter and to explore new areas. I also anchored in Little Shark River for a new experience. I'm still working so the new addition of my Starlink Satellite allowed me to go new places with less than perfect cell signals.
I didn't think of that.
The only thing I do not like about center cockpits, isnot being able to see the main as easily. When you want to see how th main is doing, it's easier to see from an aft cockpit.
I’m seeing a leak from the transmission. Is that what you meant when you said rear main seal? Rear main seal is at the crankshaft
A vibrator, helps with sea legs
Great video. We are in Salvador, Brasil, sailing home this summer.
Can I get u in the podcast before you sail home? I have a slot in April open!
👍👍
Thank you for having Chuck Howard on tonight - he is my best friend - I helped him with updating Freedom after his purchase, upgrades including the securing the boat for Sally, replacing the water heater, installing the water maker, etc. Keep up the great work. - Andre
Thank you for your comment, Andre. I enjoyed meeting Chuck and look forward to meeting him and Donna at Fort McRee! Are you the one that warned him about the storm and told you were tying up your boat in the canal?
@@SVSaltyAbandon no, Chuck and I were having lunch and margaritas when he got the call - I helped him secure Freedom in the middle of the canal to keep her off the dock and yard.

Dont leave Georgetown before the Family Regatta. Hands down the most fun and the best week we ever had in the Bahamas (april 23 - 27).
Thank you!
Thank you for posting these videos. They are very informative and your format you use is perfect. Thank you again for putting them out.
Thank you, Chris!
jeez, $40 per night to moor? That's what I would expect to be at a guest dock with power and wifi. I guess I am spoiled where I am at.
Please capture your work in detail and post as video vlogs
Sometimes those dang battens love to catch the lazy jack... drives me crazy lol
I love your channel and your format. Very refreshing compared to some of the more pretentious sailing channels. Thanks!
Wow....thank you. Kindest words I've heard all week. Thanks for watching!
Potentially buying a Com-Pac 27. Same designer and very similar. I am here because there is almost no footage of Com-Pac 27s out there lol.
Glad you are here!
You might consider watching the Salty Podcast Live on Wed. I will be interviewing Hayden Cochran and he can probably tell you about the Com-Pac 27, especially as compared to the Island Packet 27. If you are watching the livestream on CZcams or Facebook, you can comment and ask questions live in the chat. Wed 6pm Central on this channel or @saltyabandon on Facebook. Hope to see you there!
@@SVSaltyAbandon sounds good! Thanks!
Hi Captain, What's the best way to reach you. I would like to speak with you about your experience refitting the 27. Thanks a million! Pat
You can email me at saltyabandon@gmail.com
Do you need to register with the park or anything to drop anchor there for the night? That’s a perfect spot for me to spend the night to head out early to go offshore fishing
No registering needed! Just pull in and drop anchor!
Cool thank you
Just came across your channel, I'm also looking to purchase my first boat. Island Packet is by far the most attractive and spacious. The word and it's resounding one of the best built and a tank on the blue water and easily moves around the shallows. Til then I'll watch it snow and keep shopping. lol
Thank you, Shane! Glad you found the channel! I just started a weekly podcast and have been interviewing people in the Island Packet and sailing community. Completed Salty Podcast #9 last week. Here's the playlist. Lots of good info for you while shopping a boat! czcams.com/play/PLa7zyB3yIhxx9zcHSKI_owNOlPz3ZSM9m.html&si=KBnp3hfKRET8CEEh
I don't know if the newer I P's are any better, but the first ones made in the 80's were poorly made.... a poor man's Cape Dory clone
Thanks for the video and also addressing the question I sent in ahead of the show!
Appreciate the questions!
