the thing that is shocking to me is how easy it was for you to land that first internship...
in a way if they like you as a person in the company there is a chance u get hired even if you are not the best at coding?
literally not free
Better than women...
I wish you continue sharing great information, love the format of your Video !!
appreciate it man! thanks!
Love your story, but can you share a little more on good techniques to learn these technical skills?
For sure! is there anything specific that you wanted to hear about?
@@CodeRay basically just tips on actually getting proficient at coding rather than just learning and knowing how to code. How do we get started on our first project? I'm a beginner learning how to code so my questions are rather broad. :)
Wow… passing a an interview and getting an offer from Nordstrom as a SWE with literally 0 experience. You can’t do that now. You need 5+ years for a junior position
haha yeah its definitely way harder nowadays unfortunately especially for new grads :( but I have a few friends who just graduated and were able to find jobs without that much difficulty so I still believe its possible!
@@CodeRay its definitely still possible lmao people just wanna complain. Just do leetcode and you'll eventually find something
This video is clearly biased, he forgot to mention one of the most important point, it's that software engineers even though they only study 4-5 years will always have to learn new languages throughout all their lives nearly to the point where AI will replace most of the coders at the end while doctors will never get replaced by ais in a near future and will never have to always take new courses to learn the "latest" advances so that at the end software engineers may actually study more than doctors throughout their careers
That might be true but I dont think that continuously learning is a bad thing :)
@@CodeRay I appreciate your answer who compared to some who would not even bother take a look at their comment section but i personally believe that continuous learning is a major point and can even be a deal breaker for some, let's not also forget that ais will undoubtedly play a big role in coding 10 years from now which may lead to the downfall of engineers who are overwhelmed by how much technology advances and the ais who are much more effective for companies in term of quality, speed and cost. I absolutely like computer science and i dream to do a lot of things with it but the reason push me to go to the other side of the spectrum
@@samysrifi i see what your saying but isnt that also the same way in which AI machines can replace doctors in better diagnosing patients and administering ver simple procedures?
@@CodeRay Some will get replaced for sure such as radiologist but for the rest i don't see any big changes aside from the help that ai will provide in their careers and complex work such as surgeons are nearly impossible to replace by taking a look on the actual technology. It may change if humanity continues this way but this doesn't concern my generation while software engineers already are getting worried on their jobs after new ai releases such as devin ai, it just is not futur proof from my point of view
Hi, i’m considering between premed and comp sci right now. What would you feel are the pros and cons of your job Mr. Ray?
good question! i left premed because 1. I couldn't afford the huge debt that comes from med school, 2. I did not want to waste my 20s studying/grinding school and 3. I wasn't passionate about it. If you do it for the money, go into tech :)
@@CodeRay alright thanks so much i’m trying to find my passion right now, im taking ap bio and apcsa next year ans trying to explore sum more
@@minty380 proud of you! You got this, it takes time :)
@@CodeRayhow old are you rn? And what did you get your degree in?
@@youngtidepod3507 in my twenties and i did cs and finance
Super helpful video! How competitive is it to get a software engineering job in NYC?
THANKS haha its quite competitive rn I feel just because everyone wants to get a job in NYC :(
so inspiring!! your videos give me hope and motivation to keep studying at university
SO GLAD TO HEAR THAT BILLY HAHA YOU GOT THIS!
Sir if you earn 280k dollars a year before taxes then what is your take home salary after taxes and deductions in new York? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
I think taxes and deductions in NYC is almost 50% :(
@@CodeRay Fun fact: if you were in the HQ in the bay area, the after tax pay is pretty much the same (NYC is higher by 2-3k difference after taxes). Both places effectively tax at ~39% for 280k income. Since stocks / bonus make up a significant portion of your income, your actual paychecks will be roughly 9k / month.
@@MatthewHo376 dam thats rough :( nyc rent also pretty high rn, bay area might be a better option
If money was the only factor maybe. But at this income, I’d prioritize living in the more fun city 😂
@@MatthewHo376 yoo facts nyc is so fun
Thanks for watching guys! Sorry for the audio quality, will improve on it but will be posting a bit more consistently now! Comment below and suggestions and questions that yall have!

much appreciated! really dunno where to start with my portfolio and this certainly helped me get the ball roiling.

Such a great video
If you are making less than $80,000/year for being a Software Eng.----You are getting scammed.
is it just me or yall think that all these consultant have that layyish voice / accent
I know this video is old but would python or java be better for a beginner to make those kinds of apps
Not free
Nordstrom is going bankrupt by 2030 since they can't keep up with the market.
Dude, it's not free
Free code camp 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻. Confusing and doesn't offer solutions. You will waste time on the silly errors you make, and if you ask for help in the message form, they will get mad and restrict you.
and now you live your days gloating about your salary to justify your existence! seriously man, as an engineer stop doing these cringe videos! you make the rest of us look like douchebags
yoo interesting never thought of that

2021?
im a physics phd researcher and i love what i do, but i cant help but think about the money i would make outside of academia if i used my coding skills for data science and ai type jobs
Yeah! You totally could try some stuff with coding jobs but being a physics phd researcher is super dope and can provide more fulfillment!
why does he talk like that?

There’s nothing wrong with how he talks?? People so rude :0

Doctors in Ethiopia are paid about 8000-11000birr per month w/c means 160- 220 dollar per month. Imagine paying this for a person who u entrust ur life.

50 dollars a month but still worth it
talk so fast
What is the best coding language to learn for people looking to become Marine Biologists?
dont learn java, -c- c++ is better, similar syntax and its compiled edit: python is only good for data science and ai, dont use it to make games
That was when there was actual budget. You don't get jack now.
This is exactly what i was looking for -- thank you.
I’m currently in my first year of cs but now want to switch to dentistry

the median is the middle value, so in theory, the mean or average could be much smaller.
I’m a physician and interested in transitioning to (or adding to my repertoire?) coding!
Yeah this works
Tbh this content is not inspiring at all. it’s like those finance bros that flex their cars and pools. it’s really out of touch with reality. life is not all about money money money. and that’s all your content is. Idk if it’s the way that ur presenting it or what but this is not working. I’ll tell you something - inspiration comes from sacrifice. real sacrifice. I’m sure you’ve been there done that. Show that.
Yah...it's not free..
misleading none of their courses are free
He lucky this ain’t insta comments
Well I started with cpp
"You don't need that much programming knowledge." Proceeds to tell you that you need to learn python, then move on to data structures and algorithms, then to make 2-3 side projects to get better at the language, then learn data structures and algorithms, get really good at them, and get ready to use them in a side project, then grind leetcode for 1-2 months
I think what they meant was a degree or some sort of certification. I know a guy that got a job without a degree but learnt everything online
Is consulting eng rly stressfull ? i got anexiety issues sometimes and im afraid to invest there
Short answer: friends at the right places.
Don't forget he also says he had to grind really hard beforehand to make sure he nails any chances he got!
