Severe crosswind landing during storm Malik - Loganair Saab 340, Sumburgh, Shetland Islands

With the recent retirement of Loganair’s Saab340 aircraft, I thought I’d upload one of the last flights I had on the type. Landing at Sumburgh Airport, Shetland Islands, during storm Malik in January 2022, with winds gusting at up to 55knots across the main runway, making for a very bumpy approach (especially at the later stages of the approach around @1:55 onwards) The METAR during the time of...

Sikorsky President Dan Schultz presented the recognition to North Slope Borough Director April Brower and team members in a private ceremony at the 2017 Helicopter Association International Heli-Expo show. NSB is located above the ARTIC CIRCLE and experiences some of the HARSHEST COLD WEATHER CONDITIONS in the world, with temperatures as LOW AS -55 DEGREES CELSIUS WITH THE WIND CHILL. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, NSB has a total area of 94,796 square miles of which 88,695 are land and 6,101 are water, thus the need for a LONG-RANGE, ALL-WEATHER CAPABLE AIRCRAFT.

I was on board the Ark doing Marine Engineer Officer steam training prior to my submarine courses and watched the Buccaneer being pushed off the stern. The a/c had been stripped of all valuable items and engines. It was meant to be part of a flight safety film. Not sure if there was a final version. The Ark was an experience I wouldn’t have missed for the world. I still have a made to measure pair of shoes crafted by the on board Chinese cobbler. Also the Chinese Laundry used to starch our white Engineer Officer overalls until very politely asked not to do so! Watching us struggling to get into our starched ovies was a sight to behold!!

In world war II aircraft that were too damaged to continue to fight were stripped of parts and then dumped overboard. I am not a Navy man so I don't know if it's tradition that continues, but aircraft going overboard is usually intended and sometimes accidental.

    • @dogsnads5634

Not now. A damaged aircraft would be stored in the hangar and returned to port for repair. In WW2 they could do it as it was more important that the CV stayed on station, replacement aircraft were constantly being shipped forward to replace losses by escort carriers acting as transports.
